Updated the new styles

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
All 6 of the new site schemes have been updated. There have been formatting and alignment fixes, as well as font size fixes. They styles now use the default font set in your browser.

In addition we have started using alternate stylesheets which, if you are using a browser that supports alternate stylesheets, will allow you to add or remove Tweak or Tweak's Sayings.

Here is a list of the browsers that support this and how to do it. Unfortunately for Windows users Internet Explorer does not support this, and for your Mac Users, Safari and Camino do not support this either.

* Firefox users can switch stylesheets using the View > Page Style menu.
* Opera users can switch stylesheets using the View > Style menu. In Opera 7.x, you can also click the little down arrow next to the User/Author Mode (fourth) button on the Address Bar. In Opera 8, the User/Author button has moved to the view bar which pops up/down from the address bar.
* SeaMonkey, Mozilla, Netscape6+ and Epiphany (the default browser for the GNOME desktop on UNIX/Linux) users can switch stylesheets using the View > Use Style menu.
* Konqueror (the default browser for the KDE desktop on UNIX/Linux) users can switch stylesheets using the View > Use Stylesheet menu.
* Galeon (another popular GNOME browser on UNIX/Linux) users can switch stylesheets using the View > Styles menu.

Edit: The removing tweak and tweak says does not work exactly as expected. I am going to work on an easy way to set it so it stays when it is set.

    • A number of browsers have had issues with varying font sizes, so to alleviate this, we decided to let the users' browser set the font size. If you need the font to be bigger, you can go into your browsers' settings and change it.
      • I realize that, problem is, before the font was great, now it's either too large or too small and I have to adjust it every time I open a different tab that isn't IJ - very annoying. And even using the FF view +/- I don't seem to be able to get the correct font size.

        • Here's what I ended up doing to make the font size right (well, if you have Worksafe Sidebar):

          http://karma-apple.insanejournal.com/15324.html

          It worked like a charm.
        • I can't control the rest of the web. Only this site. If you liked how IJ looked before, just go into your browser settings, the Control tab I believe, and set your default font to Verdana.
          • Oh, thank you so much! I despise Times New Roman and was panicking thinking that I'd have to read the site in that all the time from here on out. Have changed it to Verdana!
        • If you use Firefox 3, it remembers the level of zoom you used on a particular website :)
          • Isn't that the coolest thing! I was so happy to discover that.
  • Is there a way to change the font on the sidebars back to verdana?
    • Yes. Go into your browser's Settings or Preferences and change your default font to Verdana. You will probably want to adjust the point size to your preference.
      • Thank you! My only question is - will this now change how all other sites are viewed, though??
        • That depends on whether they have a font defined. In general, the answer is no. Most sites still define a font and a font size, despite the fact that this is frowned upon by style standards. But if there are other sites without definitions, they will now look... well, a lot like IJ! So pick a font you like and it will be applied to all sites that don't override your preferences. Sites that do will not change.
          • Thank you so much! I'm going to have to try to figure out the size issue but other than that I think I like the verdana look, thank you.
  • Who would want to remove Tweak's sayings? I ♥ Tweak and his sayings!
  • I use Firefox and was able to adjust the Page Style options so that Tweak and his sayings went away...but then they keep coming back every time I navigate to another page. Is that how it's supposed to work, or should it be saving my preferences so I don't have to get rid of Tweak on every page?
    • I am not entirely familiar with how browsers handle alternate style sheets, since I use Camino by preference, but I've looked around and it seems that failure of persistence (making your choice stick for the whole site) is a known bug in Firefox that may have been fixed in version 3. Which version are you using? I have found a plugin that is supposed to help for older versions here, if you have not or don't wish to upgrade.

Alternatively, if you have the plugin Stylish running, you can take one of the style sheets I posted in [info]ij_siteschemes and change your Tweak that way. That will definitely stick across the whole site and in all the new schemes.

Let me know if any of that helps, or if you get stuck.
      • Thank you! I do use Firefox 2. I may upgrade, but on the other hand Tweak doesn't really bother me THAT much. :-) I appreciate the help and will look into the other options too.
  • Thank you so much for giving us all these options. I'm really happy with them.
  • thanks to branchandroot et al for fixing the sizing problem with the sidebar viewing options.

    it's MUCH better now.
    • oh, bother.

the fix was broken when i logged in a minute ago.
  • Oh, phew! Thanks for the font resizing fix! I was struggling to read some things when the font went down to teenytiny. So much more readable now, thank you!
  • I had some comments go randomly missing just a few minutes ago, does it have anything to do with whatever you've just done?
  • this is lovely, but i'm trying to get the font back to verdanda, and when i changed it on my browser it made it huge. i don't see any way to change the font size, would you have any idea how to do it? otherwise i'm stuck with times new roman, blechhh. (i'm using IE by the way)
    • Okay, IE is officially the worst browser in the history of ever; they took away the option to change the font size?! (But, yes, that /was/ the problem. Verdana displays hugely on Windows, and only on Windows. *sighs*)

If you like sans-serif (the style Verdana is) you might try Arial or even Century Gothic as your default font. Look around a bit in the list of fonts and see if another looks the way you like. If you're using a recent version you might be able to get Calabri, which is a pretty nice font.
      • IE7 has an option to change font size. It's been very helpful.
        • Thank goodness for that! Can't imagine what they were thinking, hiding that option 6. The smaller/larger setting is no substitute at all.
          • Ah sorry, the IE7 option has five options from 'smallest' to 'largest' which works pretty well for me; I didn't know there was supposed to be anything else.

Ironically, I have trouble changing font size in Firefox, one of the reasons I don't use it except for uploading icons, since they still don't work in IE.
            • Ah, I see. The problem is that small-large usually affects all pages you view, so if you set Verdana as the default and select small, a page that has Times set as the font will view tiny. If your browser lets you set a default size as well as font, you can select a 10pt Verdana, and still view that Times page at its normal size. *rueful* I just wish Verdana displayed consistently across platforms; then I could, at least, adjust it consistently, for the site scheme.
      • as far as i can see they did! haha i know right.

and thank you, i'll definitely try those! :)
  • My font size is only 'normal' if I use the older viewing options (like newtweak), but is HUGE for the new ones. I want to use the new monochrome style, but don't want to have to fiddle font size every time I switch to this site, considering my font size is 'normal' everywhere else on the web. Any idea why it's so ginormous?
    • Well, what you're looking at since yesterday is your browser default. If you have your browser default set to something like Verdana, and are on Windows, it will display large. Check and make sure you're still having a problem, because that would be an unusual default setting. Clear your cache and reload a site page.

If you are still having a problem, you will want to go to your browser's Settings/Options and change the default font. If you're on IE, you probably want Arial or Calabri. If you're on Firefox, you can just change the default font size to something a bit smaller.
      • I'm in firefox and font size is set to 'normal' which works on every other site I've ever visitied, but my default font is tahoma because I like it. I don't want to have to change my default settings which work perfectly for everything else just to use the new style. Thanks for the help, though. Too bad it's so picky.
        • If your defaults display the way you want them on other sites, they will display the way you want them on this one. There are no fonts currently defined in this scheme, and all sizes are a) smaller and b) proportional definitions. That was what the latest update was mostly for. If what you have in your defaults is Tahoma, defined at the size you like, that is what you should now be seeing.
  • this is great, thanks!
  • Loving them thanks!

By the way, notifications are M.I.A. :[
  • I discovered the removing Tweak thing before I read this and I was a bit startled. I clicked on it just to see if it really did it, haha. Will we be able to change it back, or is it a one-time click kind of thing? Just curious.

    • In most browsers, you can un-select such an option by clicking on it again (kind of an on-off button approach).
  • Can't get to the Manage Pictures page for some reason, fyi.
  • Has this caused issued with userpics? I've tried on two different servers, and two different computers, and am not able to edit or delete userpics.
  • Hi! My account hasn't upgraded even though I paid for it on Saturday (Monday now).
  • Why is the text on the sidebar normal but the text on profile pages about 14 or 16 pt?
  • awesome. I can't stand that ugly tweak thing.
  • WHY DOES IJ DELETE ALL THE COMMENTS TO ENTRIES? IT'S RIDICULOUS.
  • Darker themes

Is it possible to get a selection of darker themes? I have issues with white backgrounds. Not only are they plain ugly, they also hurt my eyes. For this journal account I use Worksafe Sidebar but I wish there were a darker version without the white background (that seems to be a part of every theme *sigh*).

My other account has one of the previous themes no longer accessible and I wish I had never changed the theme on this account. It's black with brown elements.
