State of the Site

Okay, just so everyone knows what happened and what is going to happen. Yesterday I tried to bring the old IJ server up as a second webserver to help the load. There were some problems with libraries causing a lot of things to break. So I rolled the change back, unfortunately I had to clear out some S1 style customizations so some of your journals may look funny. If you go back to the customize page you should be able to reset all of your style options.

Today I just ordered a new server to move IJ to. This one has about 4x the horsepower are the current one, so it will help alleviate the load. We are going to be moving the site to the newer bigger server asap. We don't forsee any issues, but we do recommend that you backup any icons and keep note of any S1 customizations.

I want to thank EVERYONE for coming over here and having patience with our growing pains. If you talk to anyone who came over in the June/July migration, they will tell you that we had the same growing pains, but we were able to move to a bigger server and weather the storm.
  • i just wanted to say, that you are an awesome siterunner :D i came here a year or so ago, but i haven't had reason to really use this site until now, and it's nice to have admin that are informative about the state of things. so thank you for being so welcoming!
  • WooHoo!}:P

My icons are backed up on my extrenal drive, along with most everything else I don't want to lose (3 harddrive crashes in 8 months on a brandnew Dell makes one paranoid), and I use S2, so no worries here}:)
  • Thanks for the updates

    G'luck. :)
  • I think you are doing an AWESOME job, Squeaky.

I'm going to upgrade to a permanently insane account as soon as I can speak to my brother and get him to use his Paypal for me. (I'm a paypal-phobe amongst many other-phobes I have on the internet :P)

    Keep up the FANTASTIC work!

  • Heh. My S1 style appears b0rked, but it now looks better than it did when I played with it myself. Looks like I'm gonna have to see about keeping the b0rked style. ;)
  • Thanks so much for letting us know what's up! Best of luck with the new server business. :)
  • Am I old if I remember the "growing pains"?

But thanks a ton for doing such an awesome job. ^^
  • Thank you so much for the update and for the quick move to add the server. It's appreciated more than words can say.
  • Thanks so much for keeping us updated, and for doing everything you can to ensure that the site runs smoothly. After three years on GJ and almost eight on LJ, I can say that it's a delightful shock to have an owner/operator who listens and responds to his users. XD
  • :)

  • Oh my goodness, an actual answer to a site outage upfront where everyone can see it without having to demand it!

Said not entirely facetiously. Seriously, thanks for letting us know what went on and what kind of things we should do on our end just in case.

(Now I have to wonder if website owners get giddy over new geek toys the way artists do over new art toys :)
  • Wow, another new server so soon! Thank you so much!
  • You rock. This site rocks. I think I'm gonna stick around here for awhile. :D
  • Thanks for the update! I'll be taking this account "Permanently Insane" as soon as I wrap up my holiday shopping - thanks so much for being here, and for keeping communications open. Much ♥ to you, [info]squeaky!
  • *crosses fingers and sends good vibes*

    Thank you, Squeaky ♥
  • You're awesome. I got a permenant account for an early Christmas present and I'm so very gleeful about it. :D
  • I've never been sorry about moving to IJ. I just wish I could do more to help financially support IJ but the six winning numbers keep eluding me! :)
  • I've always been happy with IJ. I love its community, the people, everything.

    I *heart* Insane Journal.
  • Thanks, Squeaky! As always, it's a joy and a relief to have a site owner who's communicating with us.

You'll probably be relieved to have the new server installed and running after these latest influxes. Here's hoping the installation goes smoothly, for your nerves and ours! ;)

It'd be really interesting to see the account creation figures and I can't remember where they are to be found, so maybe someone can let me know. The spike size must be massive.

Squeaky, I imagine that this may push back the next code upgrade here, do you think? I know that we have the ongoing issues with tracking and occasional comment loss (that's happened to me a few times as well) and I think they were errors that'd be corrected in the next upgrade? With the influx strain, I don't know whether we'll see a higher error rate, but it could be worthwhile posting a rough estimate (or guesstimate: yep, if the server install goes well, a couple of weeks after that. If not, who knows? ;) ) in announcements that us old codgers (hey, does this make us those of us who came at the end of May First Fleeters?) can point folks too. What do you reckon?

One of the things I love most about IJ is that we can actually talk about this stuff with you. I don't think I'm ever going to stop being impressed by that! ♥
  • you really are an incredible moderator! i've almost always been on gj; i never knew what it was like to have a site owner who informed us of what was going on. i really enjoy it haha :-) you make a lot of us gjers have faith in a brighter journaling future haha
  • Thanks for thinking of us. I like how you keep us informed. Your the best ( :
  • Thank you for keeping us informed. I'll definitely be investing in some paid time when I have the money to do so!
  • I just want to say THANK YOU for keeping us informed. It's so much better than other places, where not only do the admins not actually respond to user comments/concerns, but they don't bother to offer ANY explanation for why things are going wonky when they do. It's a lot easier to have faith in an admin who actually communicates with the users and keeps us informed.
  • Good.
