State of the Site
Okay, just so everyone knows what happened and what is going to happen. Yesterday I tried to bring the old IJ server up as a second webserver to help the load. There were some problems with libraries causing a lot of things to break. So I rolled the change back, unfortunately I had to clear out some S1 style customizations so some of your journals may look funny. If you go back to the customize page you should be able to reset all of your style options.
Today I just ordered a new server to move IJ to. This one has about 4x the horsepower are the current one, so it will help alleviate the load. We are going to be moving the site to the newer bigger server asap. We don't forsee any issues, but we do recommend that you backup any icons and keep note of any S1 customizations.
I want to thank EVERYONE for coming over here and having patience with our growing pains. If you talk to anyone who came over in the June/July migration, they will tell you that we had the same growing pains, but we were able to move to a bigger server and weather the storm.

You'll probably be relieved to have the new server installed and running after these latest influxes. Here's hoping the installation goes smoothly, for your nerves and ours! ;)
It'd be really interesting to see the account creation figures and I can't remember where they are to be found, so maybe someone can let me know. The spike size must be massive.
Squeaky, I imagine that this may push back the next code upgrade here, do you think? I know that we have the ongoing issues with tracking and occasional comment loss (that's happened to me a few times as well) and I think they were errors that'd be corrected in the next upgrade? With the influx strain, I don't know whether we'll see a higher error rate, but it could be worthwhile posting a rough estimate (or guesstimate: yep, if the server install goes well, a couple of weeks after that. If not, who knows? ;) ) in announcements that us old codgers (hey, does this make us those of us who came at the end of May First Fleeters?) can point folks too. What do you reckon?
One of the things I love most about IJ is that we can actually talk about this stuff with you. I don't think I'm ever going to stop being impressed by that! ♥
I am hoping that I will have time to work on the code and get it pushed out before the end of the month. If not, then it will be after the holidays. I am probably going to be having family coming into town that is going to set me back some.
Second - I took a peak at that stats txt file. "newbyday" I suspect is statistics on how many new accounts gets registered that day, right? In that case - May 30 must have been a slight shock for you! *lol*
♥
I get this vision of you on a shrinks couch, all over worked and a nerve wreack, starting the session with:
"...it was the end of May in 07.... that's the day it happened..."
Hmm... would make a good movie.... *ROFLOL*
Before May, often the numbers per day were in the single digits with the occasional teens and stuff. Here is strikethrough:

newbyday 2007-05-30 283

And then if calmed a bit for a while, with 20-40ish a day.
Here is another spike; this must be the next wave of LJ stupid.

And then here it was, for 3 months, in the double digits per day. Sometimes over 100, never over 200, not very many days over 125. And then we get to last week. Good grief.

(well. *tells excel to do math*)
37574 new accounts, of the 58858 total on the site, since May 30? Dude. That's nuts. That's not so far from a three-fold increase in 194 days, after ~5 years of being little and cute and stuff. Wow.
