Gideon was convinced that all problems would be solved by a proposal, barring any setbacks. The major thing being Greta saying no, but he wasn't really thinking too much on that. His proposal would be so cheesy pie and over the top that she couldn't say no. He didn't know what he would do if she said no. Butterscotch was running around Gideon's feet as he attempted to perfect the lights that bordered the walls of the garden. Once everything was exactly how he wanted he leaned down to pat the excited puppy on the head. "Okay, you wait here and before long I think we'll be celebrating. Everything will be back to normal." He checked the pink ribbon tied around Butterscotch's neck and the ring was fastened tight in the bow and he was sure Greta wouldn't notice it unless she studied the makeshift collar. After he rechecked everything he left the garden and wandered back into the flat so that he could journal Fabian to set everything into motion. Greta really didn't want to deal with this right now. Fabian had journaled at the worst possible time. She was currently covered in flour from baking a wedding cake, and had just put the second layer in the oven when she'd noticed Fabian's entry. It was especially annoying to be summoned away while in the middle of baking, but what could she do? Fabian was insistent and seemed like he was in a mood, and she didn't want anything to happen to Butterscotch. So she had apparated, flour, apron, a bit of batter, and all to right in front of the Prewett flat. It felt weird being back here for the first time in a few weeks. She probably should have brought over that box of Gideon's stuff that she'd put together, and just left it so she wouldn't have to see him again. And all over again, Greta regretted breaking up with Gideon, but what could she do now, right? With a sigh, she opened the door and headed into the familiar and ever messy flat. All she had to do was get to the garden and get her puppy before Gideon came home. She could do this. She could avoid the awkward run in. Greta briskly walked to the kitchen, not even bothering to see if there was food to ensure that Gideon was still eating, opened the back door and stepped out into the garden. But the garden forced her to take pause in her get-in, get-the-puppy, get-out plan. The lights...the plants...it was all so gorgeous, she had to take a moment to admire. When did Gideon have the time to decorate the garden like this? Gideon hid in his room and waited patiently for Greta to come rescue the abused puppy. His door was open just a crack and he had his face pressed against the frame of the door as he waited. What if he was too confident? What if she didn't fall for the grand gestures and sickening amount of romance and she said no? Suddenly Gideon was feeling sick to his stomach and he started to panic. She was going to say no. She wasn't going to marry him because of the Order. He thumbed his forehead against the door and was about to run out and blow out the candles and set things normal but then her heard the front door and he jumped back. Merlin's Beard, that was fast. Gideon smiled when he saw her sneaking through the living room and when she didn't come running back through with the dog he knew she was staring at the garden. Slowly he pulled the door open and followed her path to the garden door and he couldn't help but smile at her looking around with that amazed look. She was impressed, which was good. He was looking for the perfect intro sentence but Butterscotch saw him and barked happily and so he flailed. "Hiya." It was the bark that caught Greta off-guard and distracted her from the admiration of the garden. She turned around to where she thought the source of the noise came from, and quite literally jumped when her eyes landed on Gideon and not Butterscotch. "Goodness!" Her hand went to her heart in shock. "You gave me the heebie jeebies!" Gideon raised an eyebrow at her phrasing but he didn't say anything. He just gave her that charming Prewett smile and stepped out of the flat completely. He was impressed with the way the garden looked in the afterglow of a long day. There was a faint smell of honeysuckle that he had charmed into the air and the white lights twinkled happily as the pair stood silently in the patio garden. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." That was so unfair! Greta had never been able to resist that Prewett smile, and now he was sending it at her when she really just needed to get her puppy and get out before she said something really dumb or silly. "Oh, it's okay." She tried to laugh cooly, but it came out somewhat nervous, and already Greta could feel her cheeks grow heated. "I didn't know you were home. Fabian said--" But she stopped herself. Was there any point in placing blame? "I just came to get the puppy." She looked around for Butterscotch and found herself distracted by the candles again. "I really like what you've done with the garden. Your flowers smell amazing. When did you start growing honeysuckle?" He meant to answer her question but his nerves betrayed him as he spoke. "Fabian told you that story about Butterscotch because I asked him to." He stopped talking and then pushed himself to continue. "I just really wanted to see you and I didn't think you'd come if you knew that." He shoved a hand deep into his pocket and attempted to rein himself in before he said something silly. "It's a charm. The honeysuckle, I mean. I was just fooling around at I really liked it. I think it smells nice." Greta blinked back confusion. He wanted to see her? But didn't he hate her for what she did? Wasn't he supposed to just say nasty things or something? She couldn't focus on his next comment, or anything about the garden anymore. She was far more concerned with the fact that he wanted to see her and had made up a whole story to get her here. "You wanted to see me? Really?!" The last bit was a little too excited, but was that really a bad thing? He gave a nod. "Yes, really. It's been a weird two weeks without seeing you and I didn't know if you'd actually want to come if I asked you straight out. I didn't mean to trick you, I just wanted to see you." He was repeating himself and he could feel his nerves slipping. He could do this. Butterscotch was sniffing some plants nearby and he knelt down and called for the puppy. She padded over to him and immediately flopped onto his back for belly rubs. "What do you think of the bow? She seems to be a fan." "I've missed you too." Greta replied somewhat guilty, especially after running to dinner with Barney last night like a total coward. Gideon was right, she wouldn't have come if she'd known he'd be here, but now that they were together, she was very glad he'd come up with this plan. As Gideon called the puppy, Greta turned her head to follow its movements. She smiled weakly at the pink bow, thinking that it made her puppy look very much like a cupcake. "She looks precious." Greta gushed with her hands clasped in amusement as she leaned down to pick up the puppy. When she did so, however, she felt something tap against her hand. Twisting the puppy to the side to examine what it was, her blue eyes tripled in size at the realisation. She could not believe it. The ring. This couldn't be happening...could it? "Gideon!" He was trying to contain the grin that was tugging at the corners of his mouth but he was having a very hard time doing so. She wasn't glaring at him with her hands on her hips and she wasn't yelling and so he took it to mean that she was not angry at the sight of the ring. Now he just had to work his magic. "Greta," he started, and he reached out to untie the ribbon from around their puppy's neck. He let the ring dance down the pink ribbon and into his hand and he bit his lip. "Look, I know that what I did was wrong but I've realised it was also wrong to walk away from you without a fight. These last two weeks have been a nightmare. All I've done is mope and eat fried food. I've wanted a cupcake so bad that it's been killing me but I couldn't bring myself to eat one because it made me think of you." He slowly lowered himself so he was kneeling in front of her. He hoped that she didn't notice that he was shaking. "Greta Catchlove, will you marry me?" Greta was listening to everything that Gideon was saying trying to fully process it, but not believing this was actually happening. He was proposing. To her. Right now. In garden. Oh goodness! Half-way into his speech, when it really hit her that he was actually asking her to marry him, Greta could feel the tears well up in her eyes. Oh how silly, she was going to cry, but this was just all so surprising and overwhelming and wonderful and SHE WAS GOING TO BE MARRIED! And then he got down on one knee, looking absolutely perfect and the tears started happily falling. Just like that she forgave him for everything, because none of it mattered. "Yes! Yes! Of course! Yes!" She laughed and put the puppy down so that she could wipe her tears away with her free hand. Gideon was grinning now and he picked her up in a hug and swung her around, just liked he'd seen them do in Muggle films. He couldn't remember ever being so happy and he thought his heart was going to explode. She'd said yes, just like he'd thought she would, and they were going to be married. It was perfect. "I love you," he said, setting her back down. "So much." He leaned down and kissed her gently as he took her left hand in his and after a moment he pulled away and glanced down at her sparkling finger. She'd said yes. Despite the tears, Greta could not stop smiling. Her grin was from ear to ear and it was starting to hurt her cheeks, but she didn't care because she was just so happy. She was getting married to the love of her life, and they were going to live happily ever after in their perfect little house with Butterscotch and everything would be okay. Joyous laughter escaped her lips as Gideon spun her around, and she was all too happy to kiss him back as her feet touched the ground. "I love you too. I've missed you so very much." She leaned in and kissed him again and again and again to make up for all the kisses they hadn't had in those awful two weeks. Looking back down to her ring, she laughed, "I can't believe it!" Without another thought he scooped her up and grinned at her devilishly. It had been two whole weeks and he leaned down to kiss her again as he moved into the dimly lit flat. Fabian wouldn't be coming home any time soon and the pot luck could wait. They had catching up to do. |
