circumstance (ithacles)
As with all celebrations hosted in the Castle, Vedette was on duty but was suppose to do her best to blend in. Already the castle was filling with people, the murmur of excitement was all over the place. Servants were humming festive tunes and gardeners who hardly had a thing to do in the dead of winter were trimming at indoor plants of all shapes and sizes in order to impress their guests. The list was quite long and Vedette could hardly remember which Steward was which, and what each Lord.. lorded over. But she had to be in attendance, and had to blend in with the crowd. So her first duty of the day after bathing was to dress the part.
The castle was ready to celebrate not only the royal family, but the change of seasons.
Winter was now very much upon them and all the passes were blocked between Faustben and the other countries until at least early spring, if not late spring.
The main hall was decked in all the splendor befitting the royal line of Ithunvel. There were sculptures of ice which even Vedette found remarkable. No simple hand could have created such beautiful falcons, or swans without spending days if not weeks on it. There were flowers that must have been brought from the warmer climates before the snow pressed them too far in and grown in cellars with the fires always roaring to keep them blooming. Every suit of armor was polished to a fine shine and every soldier was decked out in his more formal attire.
The ladies, which she'd already seen, were dressed in the finest attire. Dresses which cost more than some families made in a year. Vedette wished she could avoid such company, but even her dress was fit for a queen because the Queen herself had picked it and ordered her to wear it. To blend in. Her dress was as white as her hair, and the jewels she wore with it matched. Everything was suppose to match the weather outside, the snow settled in and deep. The attendant which had been sent to her room was lacing the last part of the dresses' corset back when there was a knock on her door. Another attendant, the one who had finished putting her hair up into curls bedecked with silver and crystal pins went to answer it.
There were Winter Balls, and then there was The Winter Ball. The Queen had been quite clear about what this ball was for. Ithacles needed to find a wife and no matter how he protested Vedette was suppose to keep him from leaving before he found the right woman. Vedette thought it was silly. Ithacles would marry when he was ready, and if he didn't then Lethe would take the kingdom as her own. Ithacles seemed happy enough without a wife, and Vedette had no desire to try to order him into a marriage just because the Queen wanted it.
But orders were orders.
She gripped the front of her dress firmly and pulled it up as the attendant started to pull on the laces again. Vedette found the dress too showy, too.. revealing for her taste. She wanted to blend into the background and not draw the eyes of the other captains whom would have enjoyed giving her a twirl on the dance floor. She had duty, she had no time to fraternize and yet she was about the be stuck in this dress until someone untied it.
