WELCOME TO ACID POP
The train arrives at Hogwarts tomorrow and we couldn't be more excited! The game will officially open with Headmistress Akingbade's speech at the Start-of-Term Feast, which we'll be posting at approximately midnight GMT on the first. Please be sure to read the post, as it will contain a full explanation of the journals. Once that post is up, your characters will be able to use their journals as they choose. Click the button below (you may have to click it twice if it doesn't take you to the admin console) to add all your classmates' journals before the school year starts.
MOD NOTES
I think most of us are ready to get started but if there's anything you need to do before the year begins, this is your last chance. This can include final edits to your profile, making friends in the OOC community, making a final decision on clubs and other activities, trimming your class schedule, etc. It should be noted that for sixth and seventh years, taking the maximum available number of classes isn't a sign of intelligence. It's a sign of indecisiveness, and will likely negatively impact your N.E.W.T. scores. If you have any final questions before we begin, ask them now. Also, don't forget to sign up for a Bingo Card. It's not a requirement, but there's no down side so why not give it a shot?
OOC REMINDERS/NEWS
Most OOC reminders will go in the sidebar, as they don't require a great deal of explanation. If you have any questions, however, don't hesitate to ask. OOC reminders are not noted on the calendar.
UPCOMING TESTS
In the sidebar, you can find upcoming tests being given in each subject. It's safe to assume that your classes will be covering that material around that time, so feel free to discuss that without hesitation. Each year only has tests in three subjects, so leave a note in the drop box before discussing the topics being covered in any other classes. There are three types of tests mentioned this month: 1. Aptitude tests, which are to measure students' existing skill in an area so professors can tailor their lessons to their needs. The grades for these tests don't count towards a student's overall class grade. 2. Pop Quizzes, which are a surprise on the day they're taken. Students WILL NOT know a quiz is coming before it happens, but it can be assumed that the material has already been discussed in class. 3. Regular tests. Students will be warned about all other tests before they are taken and given the chance to study, just as you'd expect. In all other months, this will be the most common type of test.
SEPTEMBER'S CALENDAR
There are a lot of very low-impact activities on the calendar to help us ease into the school year. There will be more surprises as we move forward, but for now, here are some noteworthy school days to keep in mind.
• 01/09: Students arrive at Hogwarts. • 03/09: Classes begin; returning clubs resume normal schedule. • 15/09: Hufflepuff Quidditch try-outs. • 16/09: Gryffindor Quidditch try-outs. • 19/09: Results of Hufflepuff and Gryffindor Quidditch try-outs are posted. • 22/09: Ravenclaw Quidditch try-outs. • 23/09: Slytherin Quidditch try-outs. • 26/09: Results of Ravenclaw and Slytherin Quidditch try-outs are posted. • 29/09: Hogsmeade Weekend.
Most of these things are fairly self-explanatory but if you need any additional information, please ask.
SURPRISE INDIVIDUAL EVENTS
About once a week, depending on what else is occurring, an event chosen by a number generator will be assigned to a student, also chosen by a number generator. These events are truly random things that could happen to anyone regardless of their personality, often so minor that nobody would bother to come up with them on their own but public and notable enough to warrant discussion on the journals by anyone who cares to mention it. The details we've given are vague and should be fleshed out in the comments of this post by the person or persons involved. If you choose to participate, the event doesn't require a thread or even a journal post from your character; it's mostly to give everyone else something to talk about. You can, however, turn the event into a major plot if you'd like. If you choose not to participate, please comment here at least 48 hours before the event is scheduled. If a person declines an event, you may volunteer in their place. Many events naturally have space for other students to be involved, so comment if you'd like to be included in one of the events below.
• 12/09: On her way to Broom Racing, Nora McLaggen is knocked unconscious by a Bludger hit by a student practising for Quidditch try-outs. She misses dinner but is back in her dormitory by curfew. • 24/09: Alexander Flume is surprised during a meal by a public display from a secret admirer. • 28/09: Wesley Fawcett is hit by a Trip Jinx and repeatedly trips and falls as he tries to make it through a crowded corridor.
If you have any suggestions for future surprise individual events, comment below. 5 points per idea (maximum: 3)
CLUB EVENTS
• 07/09 - 09/09: Wilderness Adventurers' "Welcome Back!" camp-out for returning club members begins on Friday evening and ends Sunday morning. • 11/09: Meetings for Hogwarts X Press and The Howler are held; The Howler begins broadcasting immediately. • 18/09: First issue of Hogwarts X Press is released. From here forward, issues will not be marked on the calendar. • 20/09 - 21/09: Cooking with Charms' Fundraising Bake Sale. A bit expensive but delicious, and there's a wide variety to choose from.
ALL OTHER EVENTS
• 10/09 - 14/09: House Unity Week. Hufflepuffs are celebrated on Monday, Gryffindors on Tuesday, Ravenclaws on Wednesday and Slytherins on Thursday. On Friday, students will have the option of skipping classes to participate in "Unity Day" activities in the Great Hall, which consists of the sort of ice-breakers and team-building exercises that are likely to have teenagers rolling their eyes so hard they get a headache.
