Entry tags:elixir, iceman, jubilee

who: Bobby, Josh, and Jubilee!
when: Sunday afternoon
where: The Mall
what: Bobby and Josh have picked up a hitchhiker at the school and brought her with them to buy Josh a new skateboard.

Now that Josh Foley was a businessman who had healed Regan in return for money, he'd be able to buy a brand new skateboard! It was about time, too, if you asked Bobby Drake. Not that he would think any board was better than his, but he knew his buddy needed a sturdier one that wasn't threatening to split in half every time they went out to practice tricks. They could unscrew the wheels and everything from his old one that he invested into so Josh could probably get a pretty good board. It was to be a man date until Jubilee found out and invited herself along, but Bobby didn't mind the company. They fed off each other's off-the-wall actions and sarcasm. After making an overdramatic fuss about waiting for her on the front drive, the trio were off on the bus to the mall. Within no time at all, they were dropped off and making their way inside the bustling building. Bobby led the way, always loving to be first, right up to the entrance of the skate shop. Then he stopped.

"They're going to think I'm crazy. I was just here like four hours ago," Bobby Drake commented, squinting into the store trying to figure out if the same workers were even there. He sighed when he realized they were. This better not kill his chances at getting hired if they think he's an impatient crazy wanting to know if he had a job. He already looked weird from his phone vibrating every few seconds. Now everyone was texting and messaging him back now that he wasn't sitting around bored at the pool anymore. That was always how it went. "You two! Don't embarrass me, or I'll be full of, like ... hate!"

Jubes was far happier spending a dead Sunday afternoon with some of the boys than doing nothing at all. And as soon as she even had the inkling through Bobby's texts that something was happening outside of boredly lazing around her dorm room, she was all over that! She insta-clung to the idea that she would be joining Josh and Bobby for a day of being a mall rat! From the moment she invited herself to her running down the hallway and down the stairs to the tripping over the bottom step like the hella-klutz she was to whinging about it to begrudgingly meeting the unhelpful boys outside to boarding the bus ... she was just content to be out of the mansion!

With her skinned knees and sloppy band-aid job, she and her crew arrived outside of the skate shop. Bobby immediately gave out the warning to not embarrass him (and she knew he had applied for a job there), but the words were out of his mouth just perhaps a second too late. The minute she realised they had gotten to the exact place they had been chatting and texting about previously, she grinned ear-to-ear. No mall store was safe!!

And with that thought, she darted inside and straight to a store clerk.

Josh was definitely looking forward to finally getting a new skateboard. Not only was his old one beat to hell after years of abuse use, it had also been a 15th birthday present from his parents and thus always left him with an uncomfortable nostalgic feeling every time he brought it out. And so it was sort of symbolic for him to be replacing it with one he was buying for himself now that he actually had the money to do so. Although hopefully being paid by Regan wasn't going to be a regular occurrence, even if it was more financially beneficial than the school's allowance was.

Finally after much bantering and a bus ride the three had arrived at the mall. Jubilee was pretty funny and everything but it was already starting to feel a little like a babysitting job. Particularly when she went running off into the store like the crazy ADD kid she was, ranting about roller skates much to the chagrin of both boys. "Okay I am definitely not the one you need to worrying about," Josh said to Bobby just as Jubilee knocked a pack of wheels off a nearby rack during her flailing followed by a loud "OOPS! MY BAD!" that rang out through the entire store.

"This is why we can't have nice things!" he called after Jubilee as he wandered into the store and started to browse through the different boards displayed across the wall. He definitely drew a few stares in all his golden glory but he paid them no mind as he inspected one of the Element boards more closely. "Dude, you wanna work here come help me pick one," he demanded of Bobby.

Bobby's eyes went wide and he watched in horror as she walked right up to the store clerk. "Kill me now. If she starts talking about me with them, I'll ... raaagh." When Josh yelled after her, Bobby flinched as well. He figured he wouldn't have to worry about his buddy as much but that action still called more attention to the people he was with than he preferred. Josh being in all his golden glory didn't help. It was something that worried Bobby a little for his chances but at the same time he never wanted to tell Josh to hide behind an image inducer as if he had something to be ashamed of. He couldn't do that to him, not like in his less open-minded earlier days. Bobby sighed in frustration and then strolled into the shop, hands in his pockets and doing his best to not be noticed. He followed Josh to the boards, not wanting to chase after Jubilee just yet.

"Even if I didn't want to pick one, it'd have to come to me. I've got all the cool factor." Bobby grinned, intentionally puffing some icy breath in Josh's direction. His gaze glanced up and down the racks, noting the designs as well as the brands. "Maybe they've got something in stock that's painted gold, just for you." Since Josh wasn't a crazy dude with funky colored wheels, any one of the boards could work for him. That was a nice freedom. Occasionally, Bobby would glance over his shoulder wondering where Jubilee was and what trouble she was cooking up.

With Bobby and Josh left behind in her proverbial dust, she ran very quickly up to one of the bro-looking store clerks. She wasn't even necessarily in his vicinity when she quickly asked, "Do you guys have rollerskates?!" With a negative response as the answer, she moved on as immediately as she had arrived; her opinion of the shop lowered, of course, seeing as they didn't have the amazing invention that was a pair of rollerskates, but it didn't mean she couldn't wander around! As she skipped away, she noted she accidentally knocked over some skateboard wheels and shouted off a curt, "Ooooops, my bad!"

Now directly across the store from the boys, she scoured the shelves for anything colourful or interesting. There were racks of skater-inspired clothing that were kinda neat, some shoes that were cool-looking, some safety pads that coulda come in useful if she HAD A PAIR OF ROLLERSKATES. She glimpsed quickly over her shoulder and saw the two male specimen perusing the boards. With them being occupied, she wandered over toward the check-out desk, where two store clerks-- a guy and a girl-- were helping a customer. She started to wonder if she should put in a good word for her awesome friend, Bobby ....

Josh had forgone the image inducer this time around because he honestly didn't want to make a habit of wearing everywhere. It felt more awkward to him than just walking around with his gold skin, which he'd become quite accustomed to living with by now. He hoped it wouldn't turn the skate shop employees off of hiring Bobby if they saw him hanging around with a mutant, but then again if it did he was pretty sure Bobby wouldn't want to work there anyway. So far they hadn't any problems though. Well, aside from Jubilee being a complete spaz of course and making a bit of a scene.

When Bobby made the lame cool pun and let out a frosty breath, Josh reached up with his hand and playfully shoved Bobby's head away from him. "Okay no gold. That's just overkill," he said, rolling his eyes. He turned to look over at the other display of boards only to see Jubilee make her way up to the front counter where two of the employees were standing. Oh this was probably a bad thing.

"Bobby," he said, nudging him with an elbow and gesturing towards where Jubilee was wandering over to the workers.

When he was faceshoved, Bobby stepped back and feigned spitting. "Yuck, gross. Get your infected hands off me, man. That's probably the one you touched Regan with." Bobby still thought Regan was the hottest thing ever, but her reputation was starting to proceed her. Someone had said they even spotted her stumbling home with Sam Guthrie of all people last week.

As they spoke, he occasionally spotted Jubilee and was relieved to not hear anymore crashing and be able to have an eye on her. It was when Josh had to elbow him that Bobby realized the full extent of how quick Jubilee was. "What's...?" She was already hanging out around the employees and Bobby had this sense of dread. "...she's probably not asking about roller skates, is she?" Bobby's eyes narrowed, glaring at her with a look of don't you dare. He was being such a buzzkill this trip!

Once the customer had stepped aside, the girl glanced at her with a very typical retail stare, the fake smile included, and asked if she could be helped. Jubilee smiled-- an actual, calm, real smile, not one full of malice-- and said, "No, I'm, ah, I'm just looking around. Here with some friends! The boys are really into skateboarding, I'm not so much, buuuuut they're being really helpful!" She glimpsed quickly over at Bobby and met his stare. With that, her smile widened. "Actually, that one over there, the cute one with the icy look in his eyes ... that's Bobby! Or, er, I guess Robert as he might put on ... some kind of application of sorts! He's really quite cooool-- GET IT!--" She interrupted herself when she turned back to the clerk, and the girl's look of utter and complete confusion stood out. "He ... he's ... got ice powers ... and ... oh, never mind. Anyway, but yeah, I just thought I'd put in my two cents! Bestest guy ever, real knowledgeable about this skateboarding stuff, aaaaand is REALLY AWESOMELY NICE and stuff!" She added in some oomph on the last line, not entirely sure if the boys could hear her from where they were.

With that, Jubilee turned back over her shoulder and batted her eyelashes innocently at her entourage. She honestly thought she was doing some good, and the tiny bit of pride she had in her helpful nature showed in the toothy grin she flashed.

"I'm gonna say no," Josh replied, watching as Jubilee began loudly prattling on about Bobby to the store employees. Around the time that she got to the "ice powers" bit, Josh decided that intervention was necessary. He hurried over to where Jubilee was standing at the counter and quickly took her by the arm, dragging her back away from the employees.

"Jubes!" he hissed at her as he attempted to tug her back over to the skateboards. "I need Bobby to get this job for the mad discounts. So shut up!" he scolded her (albeit it only half-seriously), keeping a firm hand on her arm so that she wouldn't go running off again. Well hopefully she wouldn't.

Babysitting.

Bobby didn't even move to try and wrestle Jubilee away from the employees when she began to talk about him and mutant powers. He was far too horrified, leaving him frozen in his metaphorical tracks. Luckily Josh went to pull her away, but that didn't help Bobby's case at all. It was obvious that he very easily could be a mutant when he was friends with someone golden like Josh. Not to mention that "Jubes" sounded an awful lot like something else and ... man. The girl behind the counter was kind of cute in a skater chick kind of way. Heaving a sigh when Jubilee finally got pulled away, Bobby made eye contact with the employee and offered a sheepish smile and wave. Maybe he should say something, but it could just screw his chances up further.

"You're like. Wow. I am never taking you to a zoo. I'd find you in the freaking gorilla cage," Bobby said to Jubilee, not as angry in voice as he looked. He was more in disbelief. "Here, Josh." Bobby nodded back toward the skateboard decks. "Let's find you something. Stick with Element, they're pretty good. A lot of other brands like Zero and Blind won't really be your style." Unless Josh had a secret punk rock emo side to him. "Maybe we can find Jubes' a skateboard, too." Perhaps that task would give her something to do and get her more enthused about hanging with Josh and Bobby.

Jubilee didn't fight when being pulled away, just giving a friendly wave to the girl. "Byyyeeee!" As soon as she finished her goodbye, Josh finished hissing his intentions at her. She glanced innocently at him and muttered, "I think I most definitely helped! He's guaranteed to get the job now, no worries! Maaaaad discount!"

Once they were well enough away, she gently got her arm back and listened to Bobby's rant. "Zoo?! There's a zoo in the mall?!" she mumbled, a bit stupidly, until she realised what he meant. As he continued, though, she picked up up on his last statement. "Ohhhh man, I want to learn how to skateboard!! You're buyin', though!! I promise I'll be good if you buy me a skateboard!"

Josh turned his attention back to the matter at hand once it seemed like Jubilee was actually going to stay put for the time being. "Yeah, the cheapest one here," he said in reference to getting Jubilee a board as well as he eyed one of the decks. She'd probably be enthralled with the skateboard for a week before she moved onto a new hobby.

The employees of the skate shop were still watching the trio rather curiously, but fortunately they were now seeing Bobby assist Josh and Jubilee with picking out decks as opposed to more mutant!shenanigans. Maybe this would actually turn out to be beneficial for Drake after all!

"Ha. Here you go," he said, pointing over at a colorful deck that pretty much screamed Jubilee.

Bobby tried stifling his laugh but even he finally relaxed enough to let out a: "Bwahaha! Oh man, Jubes. Why do you think I applied for a job here? I don't have money to give you! Ask pimpmaster Foley here real nice." Bobby thumbed towards Josh, taking notice of the boards the golden boy was going through now. The skateboard would likely hold Jubilee's interest a day or two, but maybe she'd fall in love with it.

The board Josh picked out surprised Bobby. "...wow, that actually really, really, really looks like a Jubilee board." He was impressed, tilting his head to consider it. "How about it, Jubes? You like that one?" Bobby maintained that he didn't have any money to help spend, but even he had to admit that was a rad board for her. He might pitch in what few dollars he had with Josh's money to help her buy it if the price was right.

It's as if a light was switched on from within. Jubilee caught sight of the gorgeous board and her eyes went wide, her body tensed, and her wicked grin turned into a very surprised O-shape. It was so gorgeous!! She cared little that it was a skateboard and that it was attached to a sport she knew nothing about, but she absolutely needed to have it!! This became a matter of character, and defining who she was through ... uh ... art!!

She fell in love.

Jubes turned around to face the two of them, the board at her back, still tense. She wrung her hands together nervously in front of her. She gave the biggest, saddest, most innocent, loving eyes she could possibly give. She silently bit her bottom lip and tried to make her eyes sparkle; she kind of really could. She slowly looked between them and said cautiously, with a strong hint of barely-hidden enthusiasm: "I ...," she breathed, "will be on my bestest behaviour ever ever ever ever ... if I can have that!!" Like a little kid, she pointed backward at the skateboard without moving any of the rest of her body. Her big, watery eyes stayed on the boys. "It's ... so ... preeeeeettyyyy. I'lllearnandI'llbegoodIwillIwill!!"

Josh rolled his eyes at "pimpmaster Foley." Great, so Bobby had gotten Jubilee all excited about getting a skateboard and now he was the one who would have to buy it. "Don't make that face!" he told Jubilee as she promptly started to pout and beg. He dared a glance at the price of the board, relieved to find that it was actually pretty decent since it wasn't one of the big brand names. But then of course he'd have to buy her wheels and everything as well. Ugh.

"Okay, okay. Let me pick one for myself first and if I have enough for both you can have it," he eventually relented. After some more meticulous browsing, Josh finally decided on an Element deck. He could always rock gold, so he figured he might as well stick with it after all. Glancing at the price it looked like he was going to have just enough for both, and maybe even some food afterward. He grabbed the Jubilee board along the one he'd chosen for himself and headed up to the counter to pay. "You better skateboard like crazy, Jubilee. I'm gonna be pissed if you never use this."

Bobby would be willing to pitch in to help get Jubilee's board, but that was only if Josh would cover most of the cost or actually ask him to help. It looked like Foley was going to take the burden all on his own and selfishly Bobby wasn't volunteering if the other boy thought he had it. Bobby didn't have a healing touch so he didn't have much money to go around spending on other people. As they approached the counter again, Bobby warned to Jubilee, "And be on your best behavior! At least until we can get out of the store. Then you can squeal and scream all you want."

Considering the repercussions of this, Bobby looked to Josh. Wait. Which of them would be teaching her how to skateboard? They also hadn't bought her the proper wheels or anything yet, but Bobby figured he had some old ones lying around in his closet easily that they could start her with. Enough to at least roll, which was all she should really be worried about the first day.

Jubilee let out a happy shriek, and awkwardly hugged Josh around the middle. It wasn't a successful hug, considering all the gear he was carrying in his arms, but she gripped him as much as she could, trapping the items and his arms in her small, but fierce, embrace. Her face was lit up and she had on the biggest smile ... and was definitely not letting him go, even as he walked up toward the counter. As they struggled forward, her feet stumbled a bit as she tried to not trip him up with her overenthusiastic attackhug.

With her face firmly pressed up against one of Josh's sleeves and her voice partially muffled, she mumbled, "Youguysarethebeeeest!!" However, even in her euphoria, her mind subconsciously took note of Bobby's "At least until we can get out of the store" line ....

Josh had also assumed that he could pass his old wheels off onto Jubilee or that Bobby would have an extra set. He wasn't going to go all out on skateboard gear for her when he wasn't even sure if she'd keep up with it or not. Before he could say anything to that effect however, Jubilee had attached herself to him in an uncomfortably tight hug as he struggled to keep a hold of the two boards in his arms.

"Ah! Okay, okay, okay!" he said quickly as she clung to him, causing him to stumble backward a step or two. He looked over her head at Bobby and mouthed a silent help me at him.

Bobby's eyebrows both shot up and he took a step back from Jubilee and Josh. His hands went up in defiance, not wanting any part even as Josh non-verbally communicated that he needed to help. Foley was on his own with Lee. After all, he was being the sugar daddy here and deserved all the appreciation. Far be it for Bobby to steal that away.

"C'mon, P Diddy-J Foley, let's front your money bags and get out of here," Bobby encouraged. Things were turning out better since they had stepped into the store, but Bobby still felt overly paranoid that he was getting weird looks from some of the employees. People who could make or break his chances to land a job here if the right or wrong words were said when his application crossed the manager's desk.

Once the trio was finished with their purchases, Jubilee let go of Josh and began to make her way out of the store. She waved excitedly and loudly shouted a "Bye-bye!" at the employees that seemed utterly bemused by the antics going on in their relatively quiet store. She practically skipped through the entranceway and back out into the bustle of the mall.

Being a Sunday afternoon, there wasn't an enormous crowd or anything, but there were enough people around to make your usual mall lobby chatterbox-ish environment. Old couple shuffled around boredly, families with their bouncing kids went by, typical mall rats near the entrances of the most popular stores. Jubilee looked around and took in the sights, grinning ear-to-ear at all the possibilities.

She quickly turned back to the boys, who may or may not have been purposely keeping a slight distance from her. "Wouldn't it be cool if there was a rollercoaster in the mall?!" Random is as random does.
