Jay always lost himself right in the middle of a song, but he glanced up when he let the last note taper off. He dipped into his ability to sound like a full choir only for the chorus lines of the song, so he sounded as though he let the notes fade out several different times. Jay was good at the guitar, but it was his voice that had made him special, that gave him the edge that helped him get several gigs going, the side of his mutants powers that he liked the best but had trained the least since arriving at the mansion. He let his head raise, shifting his gaze from his hands manipulating the strings of the guitar gracefully to his first audience member. His red wings gave a little flick at their tips as he realized his first listener wasn't even someone he had met yet. He'd seen the boy around, but knew practically nothing about him. He kept to himself, and unless his roommate was complaining about someone or his siblings had news they couldn't keep to themselves, he didn't keep up with new students very well. So he hadn't learned at all about the boy's powers - and how well they meshed with his own.
He gave a little cough, reaching out to turn off the microphone as he studied the new kid. He should have paid more attention during training. Their teams had faced off against one another, but Jay had been busy trying to ignore Julian's rantings and doing whatever Regan told him to do. So while the face was familiar, no name was coming to mind. A little abashed, he released the guitar with one hand, still clutching it with the other, and rubbed the back of his neck. "Evening," he said after an awkward moment of studying. The boy seemed... well, he had a feeling about him of one going through the dulling pain of heartache: Jay had learned to see all those little nuances after seeing the expression on his own face in the mirror day after day. Had he felt the underlying emotions of the song?
He didn't want to dive right into that, though. It seemed rather conceited. Instead, he just leaned forward a little, trying to get his regular voice back. His greeting had come out with a faint musical quality. "I don't think we've really met, have we? Sorry, I kind of tend to stick to my room since summer started, or training, I haven't really met anyone new. I'm Jay. Jay Guthrie." He hesitated, then took the plunge. "I take it you caught some of the song?"
