Is that allowed?
Who: Adam and Kennedy
Where: The banquet
When: evening
Adam was still fighting to keep the grin off his face, tugging at his hair to try and get it under control, but in general he just seemed happy with himself. Though who could blame him? He had a boyfriend. An actual, real live, boyfriend. The Kind that wanted to be with him. It was ridiculous. That was ignoring everything else as well, the sex, the attention, that sort of deep connected feeling that only came with a significant other. All of that was halfway to plastered across his face as he snuck back into the party, trying to seem like he’d been the there whole time.
Kennedy had seen Adam wander off with Kyle before she'd gotten a chance to grab his attention. And as he walked back into view, she saw the look on his face. She wasn't stupid, she knew what had just gone on. That was a 'got off' look if she'd ever seen one. Kyle must have felt incredibly threatened, and stepped his game up in order to ensure he kept Adam's attention. Rolling her eyes, she wasn't even sure she wanted to go talk to him. He seemed to look in her direction, however, and she gave him an upnod.
Adam spotted her when she nodded at him and changed his direction to talk to her. He had no idea about her run in with Kyle so he didn't see any reason not to talk to her. "Hey, how're you doing? Not thinking of jumping off anything are you?" He was trying to keep his tone light, but there was real concern in his eyes. She'd scared the hell out of him jumping down the elevator shaft.
“I was thinking about the tower,” she deadpanned, pointing to where it was up to their left a ways off. “But so far that's just still in the planning stages.” She noted that his grin seemed to have evaporated, however, and that wasn't good. “So! Shit eating grin! Don't think I didn't see that,” she told him.
“Don’t...please,” Adam said, not liking the idea of her jumping out of the tower. He wasn’t sure he could handle that. When she called him out on his smile he shook his head, the edges of it coming back with a tiny bit of a blush. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he said, running his hand over the back of his neck.
“Uh huh,” Kennedy said, skipping past the first part entirely. It wasn't fun to talk about if he was going to look all sad 'n shit. “I don't know what I'm talking about. So you're telling me I don't know a 'I just came sooo hard' face when I see one?”
Adam’s mouth went from the edge of a grin to a small ‘oh’ and then he shook his head. “I don’t think you do,” he said, shaking his head trying to seem like he telling the truth but really he wasn’t doing a good job. She’d caught him.
“Whaaaatever, son,” Kennedy said. “Fine, don't cop to it. In that case, want to find a tent somewhere and see how much attention we can attract with sex sounds?” she asked, knowing he'd turn her down. But she had to ask, anyways. She really wasn't about to just give up just because Kyle was in the picture. She stood by what she thought. Adam was in need of a little competition over his affections, and maybe he really shouldn't just settle for the first person who crossed his path who showed passing interest. The guy needed to live a little.
She had Adam there, staring at her that she’d say such a thing. “Making..or…” Because that was two different things wasn’t it? Was he interested in either one of them? Honestly Adam wasn’t sure. Though at the same time, would being seen with her be that bad for protecting Kyle and himself from scrutiny.
“There was that part before where you told me that you wouldn't turn me down,” Kennedy said. “Unless you weren't telling the truth there, which, I get it if you weren't. You were tripping over your words for a while there, stopped making sense, so it's possible you were just echoing what I said,” she shrugged.
“It’s not...I mean I wouldn’t if I could…” That didn’t make sense did it? He was pretty sure she was right, he was tripping over his words. “You’re hot Kennedy,” he settled on. “I’m just...You caught me earlier.” He’d let his voice drop to a whisper because it really wasn’t supposed to be public knowledge.
Kennedy let him trip over his words, arching a brow as she watched him. “Try again, just this time with real English and sense,” she suggested. “Go!” she invited.
Adam looked at the ceiling, letting out his breath in a puff, then back at her. “I’m seeing someone,” he tried again. “So even if I wanted to I can’t.” Part of him did still want to.
“What does one have to do with the other?” Kennedy asked curiously. “Seeing someone doesn't mean you're married, and it also shouldn't mean that you just have no options. That you just stop exploring just cuz.” She shrugged again, eyeing him. “Aren't you just getting your head out of the sand? Why stop just because you've spotted something interesting?”
He stared at her, opening his mouth to answer but then closing it because he realized he didn’t actually have one. After a long moment he half sputtered, knowing he needed to say something, but not sure what it was. “I don’t think it works like that.”
“I think shit works how you say it works,” Kennedy told him. “There isn't some list of rules that came from on high. How do you feel?”
Adam felt backed into a corner. He was crazy about Kyle, he was sure on that, but he sort of felt like he needed a better answer for Kennedy than that. It wasn’t that she wasn’t attractive and it was hard to forget the words she’d whispered at him while proving her point, or his reaction to them. He just wasn’t sure she was an option. Hadn’t he just said that with Kyle? Why was it harder to say standing in front of her? “I feel like I can’t…” he said, but damnit he didn’t sound nearly as sure about it as he wanted to.
Kennedy noted that he didn't sound convinced. What she wound up doing was leaning close, brushing a little kiss over his lips, then turning to walk away. “Let me know when you decide to feel like you can,” she said, waving at him over her shoulder but not actually looking back. She didn't sound angry at all, she wasn't.
Adam almost leaned back when she leaned in, but he was too slow and then she was kissing him and he was left frozen where he was. Why would she do that? Hadn’t he just said… It baffled him that she’d try. Why would she try? When she walked away he almost followed her, but couldn’t get his legs to work. “Okay,” he said without really thinking about it, not sure why he’d said it at all. What the hell had just happened?
