RP: Regulus and Sirius
Who: Regulus and Sirius
What: They talk and argue probably
Where: 12 Grimmauld Place
When: 1 September, 1987
Rating: low

Regulus was at the house to continue with the renovations. He was too persnickety to let others do the work without direction. The work had started with the front door. He had changed it for a green door and he left the silver knocker shaped as a snake. He might not like snakes everywhere but he wasn't going to change everything.

The hallway had been completely changed. The wall paper was ripped down and the room was painted in a cream colour while the carpet was replaced by tiles. His mother's portrait had been brought down to the basement in a special room next to the kitchen that Regulus had given Kreacher. He'd moved the stairs and gone where the heads of the house elves that had joined the portrait in Kreacher's room. The library and dining room, while the third room was currently being used as storage.

The first floor was also almost finished, with it's brand new drawing room, great hall and bathroom. Unfortunately the moment one stepped on the second floor, it was the old house with four floors that needed to be remained the same old dark home that needed to be renovated.

He was in the middle of picking the curtains for the great hall when Kreacher popped in a state. "Master Sirius is here. Kreacher doesn't know what to do."

Regulus smiled at the house elf. "Don't worry. He's not coming to stay or to take you away. I'll deal with it." He came out and stood at the top of the stars looking down to the hallway. "I wasn't expecting you." Since they hadn't talked since his 'return' from the dead, Regulus wasn't expecting Sirius to ever speak to him. "What can I do for you?"

Sirius was restless. This wasn't in and of itself a surprise, he could hardly stay still in the best of times. But today even the prospect of adding barstools and picking risque pictures for the Club held no aopeal. Something was wrong. Well, to be honest, something had been wrong for a while. Ever since Reg came back.

Why should I even care? He's the one who turned his back on me. He's the one who played dead and didn't even have yhe decency to send a sneaky owl. Why should I waste any of my time worrying about him?

But Sirius did worry. A lot. He couldn't seem to keep his mind off the stupid kid. So after days of brooding and pretending he didn't give a shit Sirius finally annoyed himself enough to get off his ass and do something. He didn't stop to think of a plan, or even what he was going to say when he got there, that had never been his style. He just turned on the spot and disappareated to Grimauld Place.

He hesitated on the doorstep, but knocked before he had time to talk himself out of it.

He tried to smile as Kretcher opened the door, but he couldn't quite manage it. He had nevet liked that creepy house elf.

"I'm here to see Reg. He home?"

He followed the elf into the dingy hallway, noting that Regulus had changed the door.

Green. Of course.

"What can I do for you?"

Sirius froze as he looked up at his brother, trying to find the little kid he'd loved so fiercely in this strange man . If he squinted he almost could...

"I don't need anything from you," he said, awkwardness making him sound harsher than he meant to. "I just, I dunno, figured I should check in. See if the doxies ate you or something. Wouldn't want you to die. Again."

"I didn't die the first time," he said, walking down the stairs with extreme slowness. "Something that I've already mentioned. And there are no doxies here. We've been cleaning, as you should be able to see." Not that he expected Sirius to pay attention to anything, including the amount of work he was putting into this house.

He got down the start, not getting too close. He hated the fact that Sirius was taller. Those two inches shouldn't make a difference, but they did, when Sirius was the first born, the one who should have had all of this, privileges and responsibilities.

"I didn't think you cared if I died. You forgot I existed when you entered Hogwarts after all," he pointed out. "What is it? Did you have a fight with Potter? I'm sure you'll kiss and make-up soon enough."

Sirius could feel his hackles rise with every word out of Regulus' mouth. He wasn't here to fight with the kid, why did Reg have to make everything so hard!

"I wasn't the one who sided with Mother every step of the way, not to mention a homocidal Dark Lord!" He snapped his mouth closed, knowing he'd let more of that old pain out if he kept talking. Why did everything with Regulus have to be a battle? Why couldn't they ever just say what they meant?

Practice what you preach asshole. Je won't talk to you if you just yell at him.

"And okay, maybe you didn't actually die, but I thought you did and that was bad enough, okay? So sue me for not wanting to go through that again."

"I didn't side with anyone. She was our mother. I'm not sure why I should have picked your friends over our family," he answered. "And I'm the one who brought Him down, so you can take your high and mighty attitude and shove it. Or what? Didn't dear, old Dumbledore didn't share that little part with you."

Regulus sighed when Sirius appeared to calm down. "I didn't die. I have no intention of dying any time soon. I have a house to finish, a family to create and a heir to be conceived at some point." He looked around before turning back to Sirius. "Do you like it?" he asked, wondering if they could start with something less charged. "I have Mother's portrait all ready for you to take, since I know how much you'd want it," he said with a tiny smile.

Wait, Regulus brought the Dark Lord down? What the Bloody Hell? Sirius almost made a snarky remark about how his baby Godson axtually did that, thank you very much, but he knew thr conversation would be over the moment he did. Instead he filed tidbit of information away. He'd ask Dumbledore about it later.

"I have Mother's portrait all ready for you to take, since I know how much you'd want it,"

Sirius actually laughed at loud at that.

"Oh yeah, hand it over. I've always wanted a bat shit crazy painting to scream at me all day and insult every choice I've ever made."

Sirius took a moment to actually look around.

"Now that you mention it, the stink of Evil is not nearly as prominent as it was when I was here last. Good job, kid."

So Sirius didn't know or didn't care. With Dumbledore it could be either, but Remus seemed to take it for granted that he wasn't lying. He wondered if Sirius could do the same. Instead he focused on things they could agree on.

"It's downstairs. There's an entire room for her and the house elves' head. Kreacher rather likes it, but you're free to take any of that. In fact, there's more that you can take, like those horrible Muggle posters of naked women," Regulus said. "Please do take them or they will be out with the rest of the rubbish."

Sirius snorted. "There's nothing evil with decor. It might be dark and overbearing, but it's not evil. And I'm not a kid. You're a year older and five younger when it comes to maturity."

"You can keep your decomposing elf heads and shrieky portraits, thanks. And I'd takw my sweet motorcycle posters back but I put them on with indellible sticking chanrms. You'll need to take the whole wall off if you want to get rid of them."

He'd done that because he knew how much it would piss off his mother, but now he sort of wished he hadn't. There were a few pictures of the Marauders in there too, and despite everything with Peter he would have liked yo get those back.

"I'm resourceful. I've managed to take down house elves' heads and portraits. I'll find a way to take those down, although I don't guarantee that they will be usable afterwards." Burning them seemed like such a good way to destroy them.

"I'm going floor by floor, although I'm thinking of redoing the top floor so that I can move in. Narcissa has been rather kind letting me stay there and I do enjoy the company, but I'd rather not overstay my welcome," he said, like he was talking to a stranger. It was rather ironic that he couldn't talk to his brother, but could have a real conversation with Remus. "I'll have a party when it's completely redecorated. I hope you will come, even if you'd rather not see many of the guests."

"You'd actually want me here?"

For a moment Sirius was actually speechless. He would never have expected that.

"I mean, yeah, if you want me there I'll come. I'll even try not to hex any of your guests."

Maybe he'd ask Remus to come with him. James and Reg had never really gotten on, but everyone liked Remus, and that way his friend could stop Sirius before he did or said something really stupid.

"Sirius, this is the Black family home, yes? And for hundreds of years we've set the stage for what's acceptable and not acceptable in Society, yes? I'm setting a new stage, one that's not based on snakes, darkness and really horrible sense of decor," he said, as if explaining to a child. "You are a Black. Yes, I do want you here, but not if you will ruin it."

He snorted. "There will be no hexing in here. My guests have much better manners and I will make you regret it if you ruin this for me," he said. "Besides, if Lucius can behave, so you can you."

He motioned with his head toward the stairs. "Do you want to see the first floor?"

"If Lucius is there I'm not sure I want to behave." He immediately held up his hands in a warding gesture. "Kidding. I'm kidding. I can play nice with your guests for one night. Come on, show me all the work you've done."

He motioned for Regulus to lead the way.

"You're wrong though. About me being a Black. I've been blasted off that tapestry for a long time."

"Lucius has opened his house to your brother. You will be nice," he said with a sigh. Really, who was the older brother again? Regulus had his doubts.

"All right, in this floor, besides the hallway we have the formal dining room. I've kept some green in the chair cushions, but that's the extent of it." He liked the throw back to Slytherin as long as it wasn't tacky and overwhelming.

"Lets go upstairs." He was eager to see Sirius the perfect library. Sure, he was supposed to care about the great hall and such, but he loved the library. He'd even demolished the bedroom upstairs to make it a two story room. "Isn't it wonderful? I've put spells to prevent guests from touching the books. Nothing lethal, but I wanted to protect the books. There's light and you can stay here and read for days. I can't imagine a more perfect library."

Even the rest of Sirius' statement couldn't dampen his mood, not when in this room. "Well, if you were blasted, that makes me the head of the Black family which means I decide who's a Black, and I say you are one, just like Andromeda is." He smiled. "Even Kreacher, who hates you, knows that you're a Black or he wouldn't have stuck to your side for the past six years. He could have gone to Narcissa, but he didn't."

Sirius was truly impressed with his brothers work. The library had always been one of Sirius' favorite places, but now it was absolutely glorious.

"This is amazing Reg, truly." He gave his brother a grin. "Did you find all the comics I hid around?"

He continued to poke around the room, so his brother's next words caught him conpletely off guard.

"Well, if you were blasted, that makes me the head of the Black family which means I decide who's a Black, and I say you are one, just like Andromeda is."

Sirius didn't know what he expected, but it wasn't that. How could Reg say that, like it was so easy? Like being disowned hadn't meant anything at all... Sirius felt himself tearing up, and he went rigid to try to stop what would be an insanely embarrasing emotional outburst.

"I never wanted to be a Black anyway," he mumbled, voicr gruff with unshed tears. He couldn't let Regulus know how much that meant to him, though he couldn't tell you why.

"Regulus. My name is Regulus. Not Reg, not Reggie, not any abbreviation you can come up with at any given time," he said, exasperated.

"Comics? Are those the Muggle books with pictures?" he asked. "I put them in a shelf with other Muggle books, although I don't understand them. There is no way that Muggles can do what they claim to be doing in those comics. Controlling iron, flying with no brooms, splitting into more version of oneself. Even with magic, you can't do that. Also there is no way those women can stand up with the size of their breasts. They'd tilt over." He really didn't understand Muggles.

Regulus looked at his brother. "Well, if you don't want to be a Black, then feel free not to have anything to do with me or anyone in the family," he said, annoyed. "If not, shut up and stop arguing like an idiot. I'm not Mother and I'm not going to get into screaming matches with you. I will not give you a reason to walk away and blame me. You want a family, you have it. You don't want it, then it's on you."

"Whatever." Siris wiped quickly at his eyes, then turned around with a forced grin.

He probably should say something, since Sirius would never do, but one conversation wasn't enough to forget what Sirius had done and the many journals he'd read, with Sirius proclaiming that Potter was his family. "Yes, whatever."

He walked across the library, through the landing area and into the sitting room. "It's nice, isn't it? Pale greens and reds and golds. They shouldn't go well together, but they do when you take the time to find the right combination." Each room had been studied and nothing was random, but he could not have predicted such a perfect moment to show it to Sirius. "This house is gorgeous. No one ever saw what was under all those snakes. Mother was too obsessed to keep everything the way it was, but following tradition doesn't mean that we are stuck in the past."

Sirius followed Regulus from room to room, slightly in awe of how the kid. This was the brother he remembered, the friend he had missed for years. He listened to him talk, marveling at everything coming out of his mouth.

"This house is gorgeous. No one ever saw what was under all those snakes. Mother was too obsessed to keep everything the way it was, but following tradition doesn't mean that we are stuck in the past."

Regulus was an idiot, even a bigger idiot than Sirius. He'd fooled the Dark Lord, he had lied to a lover and his group of crazy dark wizards, he was strong and independent and then Sirius hugged and he crumbled.

He held his brother close, fingers tight around the fabric of his clothes. He didn't care about House difference or height difference. For a moment, they could be Sirius and Regulus, two brothers who'd grown up together and had stuck together against their parents until-

He wasn't going to think of that now. "I thought Dumbledore would tell you," he said in a whisper. "I should have known that he wouldn't. I should have reached out."

Sirius clung to Regulus like a lifeline, some of the tears he'd been trying to hide escaping to stain his brothers robes.

"Dumbledore never tells anyone anything," Sirius whispered, voice damningly choked up. "I thought you were dead for seven years. It, it killed me. I know we don't always get along but Reg, Regulus, you're my brother. My baby brother. I thought I failed you. I thought..." he couldn't continue or he would completely melt down. He simply chose to hold him tighter, letting his solid presence wash away some of the hurt of the last few decades.

"I know. I should have-" It was as close to an apology as Regulus would get, considering that prior to that they hadn't talked for year. "You didn't do anything, Sirius. I made choices to keep us safe, to keep our world safe and that included disappearing."

He tilted his head until his cheek was resting against Sirius. "I didn't hide before I was afraid of the trials. I was hiding because after the Dark Lord, there were others continuing his work, trying to achieve immortality. Dumbledore didn't know. He had no fucking clue, Sirius, no matter how much he likes to play the omnipotent God. Someone needed to do something, and I'm the only one who knew what to do. This is why I was hiding. It's why I reappeared and why there are five wizards in Azkaban. It's not something people know and something you can't tell anyone, because our lives would be at risk - mine and yours, but I'm trusting you with the truth, because I don't want you to think that this is somehow your fault."

Sirius pulled back just enough to be able to see his brothers face, and if that meant Regulus could see he was crying then so be it.

"I'm really, really bloody proud of you kiddo. I, I should have reached out before you, well, before. I shouldn't have ever let our bitch of a mother come between us. I," he shook his head a little. "Well, it doesn't matter now. You're back, and your secret is safe with me, okay? I won't even tell James. I swear. I just... I'm so bloody proud. You saw what needed to be done and you stood up."

Regulus smiled even as he chided his brother. "What did we say about my name? It's Regulus."

He reached up and wiped Sirius' tears from his cheek. "We can't go back in time, but we can go forward. This is one secret that you will need to keep for as long as possible." He sighed. "The Aurors know. I had to go to them. I could have reappeared, but I needed them to arrest these people. Sooner or later, someone will slip up and it will come out, but until then, we'll try to keep it quiet."

He snorted. "Stop it. Now, you're making me sound like a Gryffindor. I want to survive. I want our world to survive. I'm happy to let the others do the dirty work when possible. It's why I was in communication with Dumbledore, to let him know. Someone needed the information in case something went wrong and I didn't trust anyone at the Ministry."

Sirius smiled at his brother fondly, memories of late nights spent sneaking into each others rooms. How many times had Regulus wiped his tears after their mother punished him? How many times had he snuck in with food or books when Sirius was supposed to be locked up? They had been so close once. Somehow they'd let pride get in their way. Well, not anymore. Sirius knew what it felt like to lose his family, and he was never doing that again.

"Doing the right thing isn't a Gryffindor trait. It's a good person trait. That's not something that sees house or blood."

He shifted so he could sling an arm around his brother's shoulder, breaking the embrace but keeping the contact.

"If you say so, but it still sounds terribly Gryffindorish to me," he said, smiling. "Come on, I can show you one room that's very definitely not Gryffindorish."

He didn't try to pull away, but would slow down when he could feel their bodies get too far. He wasn't sure when he'd started to need his brother, or maybe he always had and just learned to ignore it. "This isn't going to be easy, you know that, right? You and I. I"m not saying it because I want to argue. I want this to work. We are what's left of the Black family. Bella is crazy and in Azkaban. Narcissa and Andromeda have their lives."

He knew that sooner rather than later Potter would be mentioned and things would escalate, but not just now. "Here, this is my living room." The green was overwhelming compared to the rest of the house, but it still had red chairs in the room. "I want you to come here when you like. Once I'm done redoing the attic, there will be seven bedrooms, eight if I use the one on the ground floor. There's one of me. Plenty of room in case you want a place to stay- you want a home."

"I..." Sirius looked around the living room, at this amazing place Regulus had made for himself. It was hard to see the house it had been before, but even now Sirius could still tell it was there. The years of fear and pain and abusr had seeped into the walls, and the scars on Sirius' chest began to itch.

"I think what you've done here is amazing. But this isn't my home. It can't be my home. I have a place, I'm renovating a nightclub, and I have a flat there. I, I'm not rejecting you, okay? It's just, this place... Even with everything you've done, I could never live here again. I'd go mad. Well. Madder than I already am."

He wasn't sure what he had expected. Sirius had lived a life while he was hiding and he had a home. It was stupid to think otherwise. "All right, but if you ever need a place to be, somewhere truly safe. You know nothing and no one gets inside this house without us knowing."

He didn't let go just yet, but instead he walked back down. "I left this for last," he said entering the great hall. The room was completely different, green and gold with not a touch of snakes. The only thing left was the tapestry. The names that had been erased had been carefully been rewritten. "We'll have the party here, although I plan to open all of public floors. Not the bedrooms."

Sirius listened as Regulus spoke about the party, but his eyes were drawn only to the tapestry. He walked slowly over to it, tracing his fingers over the name he had last seen as a blackened hole as his mother blasted him off it. He could still feel her curses, the cruciatus that left him screaming, the cuts that would mark him forever. But there is was, his name elegantly scrawled across the branch. As if it had never left.

"Thank you," he whispered, so quietly Regulus might not even be able to hear him.

Regulus moved behind Sirius, watching his brother. He hadn't expected Sirius to see it, at least not for a while, but he would not turn his back on Sirius or Andromeda, and this was his way to show the world.

He put a hand on Sirius' shoulder and squeezed gently. "I haven't done anything. You are my brother, even if you are a prick," he added wish a grin, because there'd been too much seriousness for a day and he wasn't sure that either one of them was ready for that. "We move forward, Sirius. Our parents aren't here to tell us what to do. As long as you want, it's here for the taking. And now would you like some tea? We can be civilized and shock Kreacher.
