RP: A Night at the Borough Market
Who: Rachel & Thad
What: Making good on the Celebrity Date
When: 8/6/2027, 6:30 PM
Where: Borough Market
Warnings: TBD
Completion Status: Ongoing

"Casual, right?" She fidgeted with the blouse she had decided to wear with her favorite jeans and booties. She tried to push her racing thoughts back out of her mind. The fact that she hadn't spoken to Violet in months, that she couldn't bring herself to Thad that was the reason for her poor form on the pitch, and that she still didn't understand what any of this all meant.

She stopped and took several deep breaths. It was just a date. It was for charity and she had already agreed to this when she told Mrs. Nott that she would participate. It was one night and after that she could go back to skittishly avoiding Thad and the subject of their one night of passion.

In keeping with the casual theme of the date, Thad opted to wear a simple white button down with jeans, relieved that Rachel didn't seem to be taking this any more serious than he was. Or perhaps he was simply perceiving it that way because he didn't want her to take it seriously. They'd had sex, once, and he didn't think it needed to be a Thing.

Especially now that he'd met Dagny through the dating app and couldn't get her smile out of his mind. He didn't think he'd ever seen Rachel smile like Dagny had, and he'd know Rachel for years. In fact, thoughts of Dagny had even managed to push his ridiculous crush on Athena from his mind.

Even so, he arrived at the agreed upon meeting place right at 6:30 and glanced around for her, hands in his pockets. Would she be late? Maybe even decide not to show at all? He hoped not, if only for his mum's sake, as he knew there would be a photographer making an appearance at some point to show the world that the celebrity dates had, indeed, occurred.

Rachel spotted him at a distance, a little slumped with his hands buried in his pockets. She exhaled, it wasn't a big deal to him either. "Thad!" She called as she walked over, a bit of her usual confidence returning.

She still didn't quite know what expect from the Market but at least they could speak plainly. "I don't think I've ever been here before, so you might have to take the lead." Standing across from him she let a smirk flash across her face. After all, it was Thad.

When he heard his name, Thad turned to the caller, spotting Rachel without any trouble. "Hey, Rachel," he greeted her with a small grin. She looked good, better than she'd sounded over their messages, to be sure.

"Oh, yeah? It's just a bunch of shopping, really, though there's plenty of interesting little shops along the way full of things you might not expect," he explained. "I guess I should have asked first--are you comfortable in the Muggle world?" He had plenty of muggle money on him should she not have any but want to buy something.

Rachel nodded, she had always kept a stash of Muggle money, something both her parents had hammered into her especially given her career path. "I'm comfortable. I just don't think I've ever been here." She could feel her voice growing a bit louder as they discussed.

"How about you show me some of your favorite spots and I'll keep an eye out." Shopping seemed innocuous enough for two friends to do but it also seemed like this could be construed either way. Especially, with photographer capturing the evening.

Nodding his head, Thad turned to walk next to her, keeping his hands in his pockets for the moment. He was quiet for a few minutes as they walked, not really sure what to say to her. She'd always been Violet's best friend, his own interactions with her limited to that capacity until he'd slept with her a few months ago. And then they hadn't really talked since then, though he'd assumed that Rachel wasn't particularly interested in anything more after that night either.

"Oh hey, this one is great," he nodded his head toward a food shop. "If you're hungry?" he added, his stomach already growling at the smell of kielbasa. He knew they also had those delicious Polish pastries there, too, and Jules wouldn't forgive him if she found out he'd been here and hadn't picked one up for her.

"I could definitely eat." Her stomach rumbled. Something about the added stress had pushed some of the more natural instincts to the edge of her thoughts. She caught the same whiff he had and pulled him by the arm into the little shop.

He'd already been headed to the shop, so when she pulled on his arm in that direction, he was a little surprised. "They've got these really good pastries here, too. I have to get extra to take to Jules, or she'll never forgive me," he admitted, voicing his previous thought as a way to push the confusion from her hot-and-cold yo-yoing from his mind. There were a couple tables right outside the narrow shop, but they were both occupied, and a few more inside the shop, with only one not occupied. Judging by the line at the counter, that table would probably be claimed shortly, too, but Thad wasn't terribly worried. Hopefully she wouldn't mind it if they ended up having to walk and eat at the same time.

"I could imagine." Rachel looked up at the line. "So besides the pastries, what's your favorite?" She look at him seeing uncertainty cross his face. Had she done something wrong? It was all just too frustrating. She let go of his arm the moment they crossed into the shop and looked directly ahead.

She could see him looking around at the packed shop. "Are they're items easier to eat on the go? It doesn't look like we will be able to get a table." It made more sense, she had been keeping an eye out for the photographer and the two of them on the go made more sense for a good shot.

"The kielbasa," he answered without hesitation. They sold some kebob style things that would be convenient on the go, he rather thought, and he would find a discreet ally to duck into to shrink the package of pastries to tuck away in his pocket.

"Were you reading my mind?" Thad accused in good humor, looking at her and grinning. "They have kebobs--those should be easy to eat on the go. That reminds me, there's a Bavarian shop down the ways that has bacon kabobs--you're not a vegetarian, right?" He would feel like such an ass if she were.

"Definitely not psychic." She figured talking about legilimency in a crowded area might not be too smart. "And definitely not a vegetarian. Too many delicious things get taken out when that happened. So we can eat as we go and eat our way through the rest of Europe?" She figured quick jests would help.

"I mean, I don't know if we want to eat that much," he quipped with a chuckle. Though really, if snacking on various foods from throughout the continent and doing a bit of shopping along the way would get things back on track and smooth out any awkwardness from them having slept together, he'd take it. Plus it was supporting his mum's charity, and that was kind of a big deal.

Once they reached the counter, he put in his order, then waited for her to order, getting his wallet out as she did. "I've got this one, if you don't mind," he offered. If she wanted to draw the line and pay for her own stuff, he wouldn't push the point, but he'd been raised to meaningfully offer, at least.

She turned to the cashier, "I'll have the same." She turned to him, "You are the expert here." She nodded when he offered to pay. She didn't want her to pay the whole time but this stop was his idea so it was only right.

Although he'd been here a few times, Thad wouldn't consider himself an expert. Even so, he hoped she would like the choices. Once they had their food, they went back outside to continue exploring the market. Before they could do so, though, Thad noticed Addison Davies approaching them, her camera hanging from a strap around her neck.

"Ahh, looks like the photographer has found us," he said to Rachel with a grin.

"Hi Thad, Rachel," Addison greeted them with a cheerful smile, hoping they wouldn't mind the familiarity. As someone who worked with celebrities often, she knew it wasn't always a sure thing either way, but both of them being on the younger side and still relatively early in their Quidditch careers, she had the feeling they wouldn't mind. "If you don't mind, I'll snap a few pictures of you now, and follow for about fifteen minutes to catch some candid photographs," she explained.

Addison's arrival reminded Rachel that this had been a date albeit for a charitable cause. She nodded to the affirmative wondering if Addison was going to be directing them how to stand or interact.

"That works for me." Rachel let a smile cross her face as she tried not to spiral back down into awkwardness. She looked to Thad to take the lead assuming that he might know better what his mother wanted for the charity.

It was a bit strange having the photographer there, directing them as she snapped a series of pictures of them with their Polish treats, but they got through it. Then Addison directed them to continue on as though she wasn't there.

"So... how have you been, really?" he asked between bites of his kielbasa, wondering if he should have asked earlier, thinking that he really should care more, but much as he'd thought he might, he just hadn't clicked with Rachel. Definitely not the way he already seemed to click with Dagny.

Rachel raised a finger as she sped up chewing a large bite of sausage. "To be honest, it's been a little weird. Violet and I hadn't been talking and then you won the date and I just sort of spiraled." She set her food back into its wrapper.

"We've since made up and that's helped tons." Rachel smiled big. Not caring if she had kielbasa stuck in her teeth. That could be edited out in any pictures Addison took anyway.

"So how are you doing, really?" It didn't feel awkward turning his question back on to him.

Brows furrowing, Thad couldn't help but wonder why she and Violet had had a falling out. It couldn't have been because of him, could it? He and Rachel... they'd slept together, once, and it wasn't as though either of them had expressed an interest in it being anything more than that? Though perhaps his ego was getting the best of him again, and it had nothing to do with him at all. "I'm glad you've made up. I hope I... I didn't do anything to cause problems there, did I?" he couldn't help asking.

When she turned the question back on him, Thad couldn't help the ridiculous crooked grin at the thought of how he'd been doing. "Really good, actually. The season's going brilliantly." Better even since that one loss against the Harpies, though he knew she was having a pretty great season as well. It was looking more and more like they might go up against one another in the finals. "And... well, I've met someone. We went for drinks recently, and I quite enjoyed her company," he admitted, though not to hurt feelings. He was just wanting to be honest and was operating under the assumption that she had no more interest in him than he did in her.

Rachel shook her head, "We just had to work something out." She smiled, it didn't seem proper to tell him that it was because of their one night together, especially with prying ears.

"It's good to hear you met someone!" She quickly latching onto the new subject. "I been starting to realize that Quidditch life can be a bit lonely." She took another bit of her meal not thinking how this might come across. "I think I might enjoy that for awhile." She backpedaled with a laugh hoping he knew she wasn't trying to be weird.

Thad still had his doubts, but he was comfortable enough with taking the out Rachel was giving him. Even if he'd been part of the reason they'd had a falling out, it wasn't something he wanted to be mixed up in.

"It can definitely be lonely," he agreed, glancing at her with a studying look for a moment at that laugh. Something was definitely off with her, but he didn't know her well enough to figure out what it was. And that was also why it didn't feel right to ask. "But it can also be a lot of fun if that's what you're after at the time."

The inquisitive look on his face told her that Thad didn't quite believe her but that would do for now. "With the post-season coming up, I think I'll enjoy the down time definitely." She smiled.

She was truly happy for him. Just shite at coming out and saying it. She'd have to work on that but for now she would smile and continue on with the date until Addison was done with the pictures.
