Charlie had been having a good time off school. There had been marking to do, of course, but he'd got that out of the way as much as possible. Then he'd spent several days in the previous two weeks on various adventurous day trips which had been great fun. He'd tired himself out in the best way. If he hadn't been looking after the Gauge family's three dogs he might have booked onto overnight trips, but single days did give for more variety.
The last few days he had been making sure the house and garden were as prepared as possible for a Weasley invasion. Anything particularly breakable had been shifted to safer positions, a couple of shelters had gone up in the garden the day before when Charlie had been sure the weather wasn't going to be very sunny, he'd fished out chess and gobstones sets just in case anyone wanted to play, stuck a couple of discreet signs for both the conventional entrance and the hedge gap where people might apparate to. He also made sure there were a decent selection of drinks and nibbly things to pick at, on top of making a large lasagne covered in cheese to reheat, and a bowl of fruit salad under a preservation charm.
He'd done it all before and didn't mind the busywork of the process because he loved getting to see his family. And he knew that if he prepped ahead he could relax more on the day itself. He set out tables for both hot and cold food and a drinks table (with appropriate charms set around them) indoors in deference to the weather, lit some braziers with chairs around them out in the shelters, thankful that the magical fire wouldn't burn people or indeed burn the tent down.
By the time the first people arrived he'd put on a decent shirt, opened himself a beer and was throwing a ball for the over excitable dogs to try and wear some of the energy out of them. The preparations had clued them in to the fact something was happening. He heard a knock at the front door and walked back through the house to throw open the doors.
