The ice cream didn't quite smack her in the face when Mia asked her to wait, but it was a near thing. She directed it to her coffee table at the last moment.
Almost as soon as Mia started speaking she knew where it was going. She hadn't quite seen it coming, but at the same time she knew that Mia was dating other people. There was a little lead weight of disappointment that dropped itself in her stomach. "Well I'm not mildly mortified at what I just shared at all," she said sarcastically and then shook her head with a sigh. "Sorry, defensive reflex. I prefer the honesty."
She gestured vaguely at the ice cream and took a few moments to assess her own feelings. Mia was attractive and fun, they got on well and she felt like she could be honest with her with minimal judgement. There was something there, and they'd definitely had a spark on earlier dates, even if this one had felt a little...flat. She had thought feeling domestic would be good, and it was to a point, but now she thought about it none of it seemed to be consistently going anywhere.
She swallowed and blinked at the tears that suddenly seemed to threaten. "I think I'm going to need some time before we try to be friends," she said with a wavering smile. "Consolation ice cream?" she asked, gesturing again at the several small pots.
