general
The X-Men have been active for nearly ten years, while Xavier's school has been in existence for twenty or more. The first generation of X-Men are now beginning to train up their newest teammates, and in more ways than defense and hand-to-hand. Staff and students come and go, but the mutant issues are elevating. While Senator Kelly presses onward for the Mutant Registration Act, most states have already enlisted the services of the Mutant Response Division (MRD, or 'Mardies'), including New York state.

Under the surface, several parties and groups are working against what Xavier and his X-Men stand for. General William Stryker is given more and more power by the month. Violent pro-mutant groups (such as Erik Lensherr's 'Brotherhood') have begun to attack groups of MRDs and to protest and plot against government bodies and officials who would support anti-mutant laws and actions.

Rather than see his students fall to the wayside and possibly into the hands of terrorists groups which would use them as pawns, Xavier has begun to stress the importance of a peaceful solution for dealing with anti-mutancy. Unity is key in his vision. Black sheep need not apply.
timeline
The films have not happened, nor will they. This is the film universe, but we're taking the opportunity to do more with our characters (the ones we love, the ones who were shafted by filmverse)... more than handcuffing them to 90-minute-Hollywood schemes and plots. So - the game takes place in 2009, beginning in June (in-character, April ooc). Since the 'not too distant future' could be translated in any way, we're starting the game nearly ten years after X-Men 1 was released (2000). So, it is 2009 in-character. Plus, it makes it easier to find correct dates on the calender when your game takes place in the current year. In this game, the school was founded in the late 1980s. See more on how time moves in the rules section, and more on the school in the info section.

about x
X (for the mutant-x gene), not to be confused to E (ecstasy). X is the blood of mutants, which has come to be known and used as a drug by homo sapiens. When injected, swallowed or inhaled, the effects can be one or more of the following.

POSITIVES
• as a pain reliever
• enhancement in strength / energy
• enhanced / youthful appearance
• enhanced sex drive
• semi-high (release of endorphins)
• decelerates aging, disease, etc

Thus making it a hot commodity. It would be sought after by all walks of life - government, medical professionals, the ill, addicts, the ugly, the lonely, the list goes on. Elected officials could be pushing for attacks on mutants to cease, while behind the scenes they're addicted to X, or funding projects in X research. There would be abductions, arrests, attacks, murders, mutants being treated like lab mice... Anything. What better way to find mutants and learn how to best them than to force registration? If a registry was made public, any person on the street could find and attack mutants that would've otherwise been "closeted" and take from them. It was around November 2008 (it's now June 2009) that it was publicly announced, kicking off the attacks and chaos, whee! Mutant blood has no effect on fellow mutants. The downside? Here are the negative effects for humans (should someone overdose, etc).

NEGATIVES
• contract diseases (from mutants)
• addiction
• hallucinations if excessive amounts are consumed
• insatiable sex drive / excessive, non-ceasing erections
• sleeplessness, insomnia
• death (in some cases)
about MRDs
Mutant Response Division. Specially trained police officers with mutant-sensing technology (housed in cell phone-sized united on their belts) that are armed and trained to deal with countless varieties of mutation. They are armed with mutliple weapons (no doubt devised by Styker), including items found in a standard police arsenal. They are armed with powerful stunning technology, electro-nets and high explosives. Please comment if you have any questions!
