Jamie held a double degree in Linguistic Anthropology and Computer Science. He very well could have majored in Spanish, French, Russian, German, and Japanese as well, but the administrative offices at the University of Arizona had put an end to that plan rather quickly. He'd stuck with linguistics given the chance to incorporate his skills into one all encompassing skills, and then computers simply because he understood them, just in the way he understood languages and patterns. Best to stay within your field of expertise, even if that expertise was mutantly enhanced.

Plumbing was not exactly in his expertise, but he did what he could. Jamie figured he owed it to Erik, and playing handyman was really the least he could do given that they couldn't call in a real plumber. The house was stolen, as much as one could steal a house, and having someone from the outside come in would have lead to more problems than a collective group of wanted mutants could handle. He'd come up for the day anyway, figuring that the latest news from the CNN ticker in Times Square would be something Erik would want to discuss with the collective group. Jamie knew he couldn't do much overall, but he liked to think that he at least tried to stay involved and to his credit, he did have a decent mind for planning.

Since he'd come up to Connecticut early he'd gone around the house simply looking for things that needed to be done while he waited for the others to either wake up, return home, or come out of the dark corners they were sulking in –that seemed to be a habit. He'd found nothing until going for a glass of water and finding that the sink was giving a nasty brown sludge, bad for even a house they were squatting in. It had taken awhile to find a wrench, bucket, and towel, but once he had he'd slid underneath the sink and gotten to work.

The house was a dump. It had to be one of the worst places she'd ever been in. But this is where Erik wanted to be, so this is where they were. And Betsy did everything she could to keep herself from mentioning how much she hated it, to anyone. Even Brian.

Brian was... somewhere. She didn't know, and she didn't like that she didn't know. It was really very important to her to know where he was at all times. And right now, she had no idea.

Which is what she was thinking about when she went into the bathroom and found it already occupied by Jamie. He wasn't actually using it though, he was apparently trying to fix it.

"I had no idea you knew anything about plumbing." Betsy lifted a brow and watched him. She leaned against the door. "Or are you doing something else under there that I don't want to know about?"

"I do what I can," Jamie said, shrugging as little as he could from his awkward position and repeating his mantra of the day. He liked to help out and he didn't mind it at all. He also liked learning new things... like plumbing. It was proof you couldn't learn everything by reading a book. "The sink's been sludging again." He nudged the glass filled with brown water by his foot.

Wrinkling his nose, he reached for the wrench and started tugging on a nut topping off a screw in one of the pipes. He had the feeling something needed to be cleaned out and unstopped. "Have you seen Erik?"

"I haven't." She bent and looked at the glass of what was supposed to be water that was resting on the floor. She didn't want to touch it, but she'd never seen anything like that come from a faucet before. She very nearly accused him of lying about it, but further inspection informed her that there wasn't really anything outside that would make water look like this.

Just as curiosity almost got the best of her and she nearly touched the water in the glass, Betsy came back to herself and pulled her hand away quickly.

"That's really disgusting." She was glad now that she hadn't been able to get in here for a shower. It wasn't likely that the water would be like this everywhere in the house, but she really didn't want to risk it.

"Erik and Brian are both gone. I don't know where." Betsy stood up again and retook her spot against the door.

"I assumed," Jamie said, tugging on the nut with the wrench. "He'd be around later today. CNN ticker said something about a protest in Connecticut. NPR on the way up said some school district decided to let in mutant students, and I'm guessing that's what the protest is going to be about. I'm also guessing Erik's going to want to do something about it. Patterns and all."

Patterns were what he did and it was just so much easier to relate, especially when it came to, well, talking. He'd never been very social, preferring solving problems --even like the small one the plumbing gave him now-- to having an awkward conversation with someone. Much less a conversation where switching away from English, as he tended to do, might be frowned upon.

Making sure he'd turned the water off, Jamie removed the piece of pipe from the circuit and unscrunched himself from underneath the sink.

"We could lend a hand," she said. With the girls it was hard to tell if you were looking at one or a fraction of them. Some of them may have been with Erik at this moment. If that were the case, this one didn't seem to be terribly concerned.

She stood there politely, and if she'd snuck up on the pair, it hadn't been on purpose. Her head cocked to the side, the blonde was prone to staring. Her social skills-- their social skills-- were a bit lacking.

"It does appear to be a regular patte..." Betsy looked over her shoulder and made a face. It wasn't that she didn't like the little Stepfords. It was just that they did that weird thing. And she wasn't entirely sure that all of them were real. It seemed more strange to her when there was only one of them - like now - than when there were many.

"Honey, I really don't mean this in a bad way, but we need to get you girls some name tags."

Betsy had no idea at all which one she was looking at now. Or if it was actually one of the original three named ones. Or maybe it was all three of them in one body.

Mostly, the idea of finding herself in an uncontrollable rage in a small room with the Stepfords frightened her and creeped her out.

All those blond heads popping up out of nowhere.

She managed to suppress a shudder and looked at Jamie. "I think the help is your call." She smiled at the Stepford. "I'm not actually helping, I may in fact be hindering."

"No," Jamie said, standing up. It took a moment for him to regain his balance as body movement wasn't exactly his forte either. He walked over to the sink with the garbage disposal installed and turned the water on there. It was clean, and he supposed he could have just gotten his glass of water from there in the first place, but fixing something was a better use of his time and rather rewarding in the end.

He'd already turned on the sink and grabbed a sponge and bottle of soap before he realised that he hadn't exactly answered the girls' questions.

There were an awful lot of females in the room. They were all looking at him too. "I mean I've got it," he corrected quickly. He turned around before he started scrubbing it out so that he could show them the gunk built up inside. "It just needs to be scrubbed. And then maybe some Drain-O for the rest." This was what men were supposed to do, right?

Jamie turned back to the running water and tried to ignore the prickling itch spreading across his neck.

Girls made him nervous.

This one found the entire ordeal fascinating. The Hive found comfort in the mundane. If they wouldn't be allowed to help then they would watch.

"Name tags duplicate too," they said answering Betsy. Though there were currently only two females staring at Jamie, there were certainly a potential for more.

Not that The Hive would have purposefully tried to make Jamie uncomfortable. They didn't purposely try to make any of the Brotherhood uncomfortable. Sometimes it just happened.

"But we could change them." Betsy frowned a bit, and realized the girl was missing the point here. "Nevermind."

She turned her attention back to Jamie. "What was this protest you saw?"

It wasn't likely that Erik would ignore it, or that he hadn't heard about it. The man seemed to have an eye and an ear on everything that went on anywhere in the country. Betsy often marveled at the amount of things that he knew.

Jamie scrubbed a bit more, rubbing the brush hard up against the inside of the pipe. Brown water gushed out through it, slowly becoming lighter as he continued to clean. "It's been all over the news," he said, not turning around. "There's a school a few towns over letting in mutant students. The Friends of Humanity protest planned for the first day back, I think it is."

He stopped a moment, reaching up to scratch his head with wet hands. A bit of water dripped down his face and got onto his glasses. He bit his lip and added, "Il était sur la télévision ce matin. Der Fernschreiber im Zeitquadrat... Um... it was, uh, on CNN this morning. The ticker... in Times Square. I... yeah." He blushed, scratching his head again and appearing rather flustered. That happened at times; he just switched. Normally when he became nervous.
