Gretel had been staving off the stir-crazy for days now, but just barely. Not only was she completely out of her element in a town set three centuries in her future, but one she was forced to stay in. Without Hansel. She and her brother had never been apart for more than twenty-four hours, and now it was going on a week. Her mantra had been simple; he's fine, he doesn't even know you're gone, but as much as that settle her worry for her twin's general safety, it did nothing to alleviate her own anxiety. She felt alone and vulnerable in ways she'd never encountered before. Thanks to people like Sam and his brother, she'd been able to keep a hold on herself.
But the edges were starting to fray.
Acceptance of this place seemed to be the only option, but she wasn't ready. Everything was just too strange. Too alien, with their modern technology, pop culture references, and clothing. That's why catching a glimpse of someone wearing leather, raw wool, and thick-soled riding boots had nearly stopped her heart with the fleeting hope of familiarity. She tracked the person through town, wary of getting too close- if anything for the fear that they'd just disappear and prove that her grip on her sanity was slipping.
But they didn't. They headed to the water's edge and into a dark wooded structure that was much more comforting to her eye than the modern buildings in town. Gretel readjusted the hinge-headed crossbow strapped over her shoulder, and went inside.
