Sweets for the Sweet
Dean went home with his treasured booty. He took the time to grind and brew it up; it was quickly poured into a thermos. He headed out the door with one other destination in mind before heading to his final one.
He got yet another bag that made him more than a little happy. It smelled so good. And soon, he was on his way to the correct destination. He had a few places in mind. He touched the ring Dinah had given him, just a light nudge. He wasn’t in trouble, so he wouldn’t activate it; he didn’t want to frighten her.
Instead he used his brain. He knew where she liked to perch, and soon he was standing at the foot of one of the buildings. Pulling his own comm link from his pocket, he sent a signal to her and waited. If he wasn’t in the right place, he would be eventually.
----
Dean was really the only one who would call her on the comm these days. Maybe Zoe. Dinah still wore it out of habit more than anything. When it beeped to indicate that someone was signaling her, she smiled and pressed the button to talk.
“What’s up?”
She didn’t use any terms of endearment or names, just in case. Just in case it wasn’t him.
She did pace a little bit on top of the building. She was currently watching a warehouse that might be the location for drug manufacturing. Possibly. So far, she’d seen absolutely nothing suspicious and was beginning to think that she’d gotten a bad tip.
----
“Found any bad guys? I got something that could warm you up.” Dean said this and managed it without sounding completely dirty. He meant it in earnest; he did indeed have something for the woman far far above him.
“So, if you can get free, come down and get it because it sure as hell ain’t comin’ up.” He smiled up at the woman he couldn’t see. If she was here at all.
“Meet me at Lexington and 5th.” The hunter laughed softly into the comm; the location wasn’t that far from where he stood, but it wouldn’t give away one of her usual perches.
----
Dinah smiled as the familiar voice filled her ear. There was even a half smirk at the comment about warming her up, even if she knew well enough to be able to tell the difference between something that only sounded like an innuendo and actual innuendo.
“No bad guys at the moment. I’ll be right there. I could use some warming up.”
Her tone was laced with just a touch more flirtatiousness than perhaps his had been, and she didn’t feel one bit sorry about that. She made her way down the fire escape of the building she’d been perched on and pressed her ring to activate it. There were ways to find Dean and the particular street corner he’d referred to without doing so, but this was the fastest way to navigate the ever-moving City. Though she didn’t need to keep the ring going for long. The corner was close enough and she soon spotted the man in question and pressed her ring again to turn it off.
“Should I worry about how easy it is to be found?” she teased as she approached.
----
Dean glanced down at the ring on his finger, a slight smile on his lips. He knew she was looking for him. Rather than try to run, he stood there waiting for her. His hands held the thermos and the bag of goodies meant for his gal.
“You need to change up your spots more often, make it a little more random. You don’t want them to become too routine.” He shrugged, knowing he wasn’t playing along in the teasing game. He wanted her to be safe.
“Coffee and baked good.” She didn’t have to worry. He hadn’t gotten her pie, even if it was his favorite. “Take a break from being a hero and eat with me.”
----
“I do mix it up,” Dinah said, defending herself. “You just know me well.”
All the same, he did have a point. There wasn’t such a thing as too much caution. She leaned over to pull him in for a quick kiss.
“So what’s the occasion?” she asked, indicating the thermos and the bag containing baked goods. “Not that I’m complaining. At all.”
He didn’t drop in on her patrols often and their anniversary had been awhile back, so it wasn’t that. She did worry a little bit that he had something to ‘discuss.’ Sort of softening the blow. Though that was just paranoia over what seemed to be a sweet gesture.
----
“There has to be an occasion to see you?” Dean looked a little sad to hear this, but he didn’t let her go once he had her close, even if he was holding a goodie in each hand.
“Seriously, you’ve got to take a break. The bad guys look to be on the quiet side, and Sam’s holed up in the bunker of wonders. So, you, me, coffee, and food - sounds good, right?” He finally stepped back for her to see that he did have good stuff for her, or at least might have good stuff for her.
“We need to talk about the end of the world as we know it too.” The hunter wasn’t even going to be subtle about it. “What do we do if it should come? Do we start looking for a way to getting back home or somewhere else? Whose mind do we start picking at just in case?”
----
“Of course there doesn’t have to be an occasion to see me,” Dinah said, leaning in and tilting her head to kiss the corner of Dean’s lips. “You just don’t usually come to see me while I’m patrolling.”
Usually, he’d be there waiting when she got home or vice versa. They made their time together when they could. The hours were odd, but it worked for them.
Dinah smiled at the coffee and food.
“Can I carry anything? We should go find that car of yours.”
She was sure that ‘baby’ was around here somewhere after all. It would be easier to enjoy the treats he’d brought if they weren’t walking. Her smile faded a little bit as Dean brought up the questions that she’d been mulling over herself. She’d worried about what might happen if this all went badly and if Fred’s team couldn’t fix the City. Would they all die? Would they end up back in their own worlds by default? And if that happened… She held out her hands, both for whatever he might let her carry and because she wanted his hand in hers right now-wanted something to hold onto.
“I’ve been over and over that in my mind and the only person I can think of is Jesse. But if he’s stuck here too-do you think he could do it? Send us somewhere safe?”
The ‘us’ in that question meant everyone in the City. If Dinah was going to find a way to safety, she wasn’t just going to leave and turn her back on the rest of the residents of this place. She would never be able to live with herself if she disregarded the lives of others just so she could survive.
----
"I don't know what he can and can't do. He's done some really crazy shit, but there might be something. We need him as last resort. I don't wanna go depending on some god; I have no problem with his drinking and smoking, but he's still God." Dean did have some trust issues when it came to that particular father figure, or perhaps all father figures in some way.
"We have to help them." The hunter finally took her hand in one of his after passing over the thermos. She could start drinking he supposed. Once things were settled handwise, he started leading her to the Impala.
"Fred and them, though who the fuck knows who all 'them' will be." He really didn't want to work with some of the brainier types. They weren't quite right in the head.
