Play! (Zoe)
Jesse went home directly after his conversation with Dr Hank the polar bear. He didn't want to be in public when he changed, if it was going to happen. If he became something vicious and didn't have his own mind at first, he didn't want to hurt anybody. Even though Hank had seemed perfectly in control of himself, minus that talking bit, Jesse couldn't be certain that he would react the same way.

Of course, being who and what he was, he could likely stop all of it before it even happened, but he discovered that he sort of wanted to change into something else. He wanted to know what it was like. On top of that, he was curious to see what he was going to change into. Did the City pick the animal? Was it related to who he was as a person? If that was the case, then what did being a polar bear say about the doctor? Or was it all random?

It didn't really take long for him to find out. Jesse changed within the hour. It hurt, as Hank had warned him. But much worse than he'd been expecting. He supposed he'd imagined a slight discomfort, but this was like every inch of him was in extreme pain for a few moments. Moments that felt like hours. Then he was swamped in his own clothing and a good deal closer to the floor. He walked around the apartment a bit, getting used to the new form, realizing that he was a dog, before going into the bathroom and jumping up on the counter to see into the mirror.

He grinned at himself. The mottled black and tan coat. The blue eye and the brown eye gazing back at him. He supposed being a mutt was pretty fitting. He would have had a dog like this growing up, if the ancient hag Marie had allowed such a thing, or if his parents had lived and found a way out of that place. This was the kind of dog every boy dreamed of. A playful, happy looking animal.

There was an urge that he found familiar, and he went to satisfy it, but rememebered moments into the act that he no longer had pockets, or hands, which meant no smokes. No smoking. That was a bit of a downer.

Well, he'd just have to find something to occupy his time with, then.

After wrestling with the knob on the front door for a while, Jesse managed to get out of his condo, down the elevator, and out the front door with a strange look from the front desk girl and the doorman.

Running, tongue lolling out, Jesse ran to find the first person he thought of.

It had been a long day. She'd talked to Alfred about the capture of not the usual two but three hyenas. She'd told him to keep in touch with the zoo to see if the animals could be rehabilitated or whatever one did with animals that had been used by criminals. Then again, hyenas didn't seem all that given to the nicer ways of life; not that she saw anything wrong with it. They were just being themselves; she didn't see that the same could be said of all humans. There were some humans that just needed to be put down.

The Amazon had also talked to the great Bat butler/confidant about further weapons and armament. She had liked having the guns, even if they were loaded with tranquilizers. Of course, there was no telling how everyone would react to tranquilizers, but it had to be better than taking the chance of getting knocked around. It limited the odds perhaps...then again, those tranqs could be used against the Bat during battle.

Zoe was tired, emotionally more than physically. She'd actually had to do a little work in the Wayne Building; not that she didn't work, but there were some days she didn't see why Bruce really bothered. The business did seem to run itself. Whatever that business was; she was still trying to figure it out, and she was only security.

Being tired, she headed home to change into something comfortable before heading out the Park. She had thought of calling Jesse to see if he wanted to go for a walk, but she wasn't sure they were in that sort of...whatever it was they were in. So, rather than going for something that was truly comforting, she gave in to her more practical side and went with a simple jogging suit. If she couldn't walk with someone, she'd run on her own. Right? Of course, once she'd started running, she really didn't want to stop. It was the physical exertion she needed apparently. So, she might have ended up running a little longer than she first expected, but she didn't feel as she had when she started. She felt better. She was actually smiling.

Jesse tracked Zoe down not with his normal godly abilities, but with his new nose. He found her scent easily outside of the Wayne Building and followed it to her apartment. From there, he followed it to the park. When he saw her, he wagged his tail and started after her, catching up and then matching her stride while looking up at her and grinning in his new doggy like way.

For all her "awareness," Zoe didn't notice her new running partner for a while; it wasn't until she slowed down to stretch and start to cool off that she spotted the dog. She couldn't be sure, but she thought it was smiling at her. She looked at the dog while she stretched her legs, doing lunges or bending over to touch fingers to ground.

"You lost?" Her voice wasn't angry, although she didn't sound like she was used to speaking with animals. She really wasn't. Her hands were over her head as she worked out any kinks in her sides and shoulders. Her top might have scooted up now and then to give a tiny flash of skin.

Jesse wagged his tail at Zoe, happy to see her, happy that she'd stopped to talk instead of ignoring him and continuing on her run. She smelled of Zoe things behind the mask of the sweat that had begun. Things he'd seen her at, but now knew by scent as well. The Batsuit was one of them. He wouldn't have known that if he hadn't known what she did, but he did, so he knew the strange odor - tight to her flesh and like a darkness to his nose - was her being Batman.

He whined a bit when he saw the briefest glimpse of her stomach as she moved, a happy sound that probably should have been made in anticipation of steak or some other grand doggy treat.

Jesse was unsure if Zoe would recognize him as a dog. He didn't think so. Why would she ever think of him being one?

"ZOE!" The word came out as a harsh bark. When he tried to form the letters like he normally would, nothing happened. "ZOE! ZOE!"

Unsure of what else to do, he just wagged his tail some more.

Zoe ignored the whining, suspecting it had something to do with wanting attention which could lead to food or petting or whatever, and she would have settled into running again after giving the dog a light pet on the head. She would have until it decided to bark her name.

She jerked slightly the first time, looking around just a little. Was this some sort of joke? Then it barked again; her lips thinned as she crouched down to get a better look at the dog. Her brow rose. If anywhere in her life she'd meet a talking dog, it would be here. Then again, the bark could be some weird...fluke?

"Okay, dog. That's a neat trick. Com'ere." The reality Zoe had left years ago when she came to the City, or was hijacked, had few animals. Horses, cattle, beagles, but they weren't that common. Here there were a few more animals roaming about, but even then, she'd not really had much experience with them. "You're supposed to have a collar or something, right? Someone's probably missing a happy dog like you." She motioned for the dog to come closer, patting her thigh to get its attention.

He bounded forward, head low and back high, playfully bouncing toward her. It was kind of fun, her not knowing it was him. There were also all kinds of things that were trying to override his decision to get her attention.

Like the squirrel that ran by behind her.

Or the interesting smell of the nearby garbage can.

Also, playing seemed like a really good idea right now. If only he had a ball...

"ZOE!" Jesse nuzzled into her hand and licked it. She tasted like sandwich meat. Bread. Mayo. Lettuce didn't taste very exciting, but it was there.

While the dog was busy licking her hand and barking her name, which was all kinds of disturbing, Zoe checked its neck for a collar or some sort of id. Nothing. Her fingers scratched a little at its jaw before she claimed its face, carefully and pulled it to look in its eyes.

"You can stop barking my name." She stopped, looked around. "Why am I talking to a dog? Don't you have an owner?" She sighed, but just how happy the damn thing was made her smile. It was infectious the happiness. She rubbed the sides of its head and scratched at its neck before standing.

"What do you want? I donno what dogs want. Never had ...." Then she remembered the beagles. She looked around, and found a stick. It would have to do. She lifted it up to let the dog see. "Now, I'm gonna throw this. You bring it back, I'll throw it again. You don't bring it back, I'm running." Yes, this was probably very high on her list of odd things that happen in the City, and to others it probably wouldn't be all that odd..perhaps.

Jesse snorted. An owner. Please.

He tried briefly to bark his own name, but it didn't come out right. He could only get the first syllable. "JES" The rest of it was lost. Even that didn't really sound like a word, more like he was coughing. One syllable at a time, then, he supposed.

There was going to be another try, but he got sidetracked by the stick. He bounced toward it, and tried to get it by standing up on his hind feet. Then wagging his tail at her and looking toward the rest of the park. She had to throw it. It needed to be thrown. He needed to chase it. Catch it. Bring it back. Yes. It had to happen. Right now. Now. Now now now.

He thought if he wagged his tail any harder, his butt was going to fall off.

Zoe gave a soft hmph of laughter at the snort. "No owner? You're a free dog, then, eh?" She smiled down at the mottled monster.

"So you don't just bark my name." That actually was a little comforting to the Amazon. She laughed softly at how excited the beast got, and soon she flung the stick as far as it would go. Not so much to get rid of the dog, but it seemed to have more energy than any creature had the right to have. She started to walk, just a few steps up the path, but she didn't run off. Even if it was just a dog, it seemed cruel to do.

"This is just weird." She said to no one in particular, and she considered calling Jesse. He'd find the dog interesting. Didn't he tell her he had had a dog?

Jesse flew. One minute he was standing next to Zoe and the next he was gone, off as fast as his legs could carry him. He kept an eye on the stick as it sailed through the air and landed a good way off from where she was.

He was picking it up in his mouth and carrying it back to her without a second thought. Happy to have gotten the stick. Glad to be returning it. Hoping in his secret heart that she would throw it again.

But he realized, as he dropped it at her feet, tail wagging, that he had to find a way to let her know it was him. She might get mad if he continued to just play and never told her, then said later 'oh, by the way, thanks for the game of fetch'.

What would be a fast way to tell her? He couldn't bark his full name. Ah, and what had he been craving since leaving the apartment?

"ZOE!" He barked suddenly. "SMOKE!"

Zoe was a little surprised when the dog came back with the stick. She also surprised that she was happy that the dog had returned. She bent down to get the stick and to give him a soft pat on the side if he was in reach. She stood again and was pulling back to throw the makeshift playtoy when the dog decided to say something else.

"You.." There was a soft Chinese curse or two. "You're talking. Smoke? No, don't smoke, and dogs shouldn't either. Hell, the only person I know that smokes shouldn't - I don't care if he is a god. It's an only somewhat sexy habit." She lifted the stick to throw it again.

"You remind me of him. Think he'd like you. Have half a mind to call him and have him see you." She threw the stick, her mind not at all up to putting a few things together.

Jesse twitched in the direction of the thrown stick, but this time he stopped himself. He sat right in front of her. Tried to get her to really look at him.

She'd gone and mentioned his name.

"SMOKE!" He barked. "NEED!"

Now that he was thinking about it actively again, he discovered that his craving was intense. He very much wanted her to go buy a pack and help him.

"HIM!" he said, suddenly thinking. "HIM! ME!" There. that should do it.

Zoe had expected him to run off after the stick, but instead, he stayed put. Her brows lifted as she looked down at the dog; he was getting agitated, and that bothered her in more than one way. She wasn't the kind of person to run from something, but the way it was acting...

"What?" The Amazon's brain was working through what the dog was talking about, and the conclusions it was jumping to were a little unsettling. Zoe hadn't dealt with werewolves, so the idea of it wasn't one she naturally would have come to. In fact, the talking dog was more of a trick or a mutant before it was something that had once been human - or at least that was how it worked in her mind.

"Jesse?" She crouched down again to look at the dog. She looked around, still waiting for the Cowboy God to come out from his hiding place. "Jesse? There's no way. And you do not need to smoke. Pretty certain any god, if you are him taking up some dog form for who knows what hell of a reason, could avoid smoking. Plus, dogs don't smoke." The shift in their relationship, whatever it was, had made her feel the need to point that out, even if it was to a dog that had her thinking it was the man in question.

"Jesse?" Yeah, she was trying to deal with just the idea of it at the moment.

He snorted again at her chastising for the smoking. He knew he didn't need it. Knew he could stop himself easily. That wasn't the point.

"LIKE! IT!" He said, in his barking way. He wished he didn't sound like he was yelling all the time, but supposed he had to deal with it if he wanted to talk at all. He certainly wasn't a cartoon animal.

"YES!" When she said his name. "YES! YES!"

He was wagging his tail again. Furiously. She didn't look too happy about the situation, but had finally gotten the idea.

Then he did run to get the stick, and brought it back. Glad he could be playing again. He realized that he was unable to completely ignore or forget about the thrown object, that it had been lurking in the back of his mind, waiting for his human thoughts to get out of the way.

It was a little silly.

"SMOKE!" He tried again.

Zoe hadn't stood as the revelation was made. She hadn't stood when the dog..Jesse in dog form ran off to get the stick. She was still there when the dog came back with said stick. She blinked at him.

"No. No. You aren't smoking. You'll make your fur smell bad, and I don't think dogs can smoke, no matter how many paintings people make of them doing so while playing poker." She picked up the stick as she stood. Maybe she was dreaming. Maybe she'd hurt herself, and she was having some strange moment in a coma or under drugs. It was a hallucination perhaps. She might have been working too hard.

Rather than say anything more, she threw the stick again, her mind working through all this. So, now the man she cared about was now a nicotine fiend of a dog? Had that really changed? Just the shape, she suspected. Not that he ever did anything that suggested he was a big of a dog, but a man who flirted like he did...it suggested he was certainly successful that could hint at the dog within.

Jesse blew air out of his mouth, frustrated. Clearly he wasn't smoking again until he was in his human form. That was going to be a long wait. So far, though, it was the only complaint he had about being a dog.

He turned and ran for the stick, once more delivering it to her with a wag of his tail. Happiness in chasing.

When he returned, he realized that she didn't look quite comfortable with any of this. So he placed a paw on the stick to keep her from throwing it again.

"OKAY!" He tried to make it sound like a question, but it just came out a bark. So he whined a little, frustrated, and moved into her, burying his head in her stomach affectionately. He was worried about her.

Zoe blinked as he barked again. Her mind still off wherever, but the whine and the nuzzle made her laugh; it wasn't a bitter or sad laugh, but it wasn't overly happy. She hugged him as best she could, her hands softly rubbing at his side.

"Think this could be stranger than the zombies. Can't say I like you being a dog. You're a good dog, but can't say I like it. Surprised you can be one." She continued to rub at his side before giving him a pat and lightly nudging him back.

"So, are you stuck this way?" She started to stand, grabbing for the stick. "Is this something you just do for the hell of it?"

"BIT!" Jesse said, as he was shoved away. He took it as a playful wrestle-push and started to push back, wiggling. "BEAR!"

Getting a little too riled up, Jesse saw her hand go for the stick, and he wanted to get there first. He tried to race her too it, but instead found himself nipping at her hand instead. He'd been aiming for the stick.

Instantly, he felt badly and backed up, tail between his legs and ears down. Whining, but this time it was a pathetic sad whine, one that said he knew he'd done something wrong.

He knew this was going to be a bad thing for Zoe, too. He could see that he'd drawn blood. She was going to change. And it was his fault. Again.

"You bit a bear?" Zoe was a little confused by that, and when he went for the stick, her other hand was reaching up to push him away again. How was she suppose to throw it if he was getting in the way?

Then he bit her! The Amazon was doing good to not react to the nip with returned violence. She pulled her hand back quickly to look at it. There was a definite displeased look on her face as she turned her hand this way and that, her lips moving slightly with mumbled Chinese curses.

"Did you do that to the bear too? Is bear a word for some really big man?" She rubbed at her hand as she finally stood. "Fuck me, that hurts." She could tell he felt bad about it, and he should, not that she knew what it meant, being bitten by an infected...person.

"Com'ere." She sighed, crouching down again. She was getting something of a work out this way. "You want to go home with me, let me clean this up, fix some dinner, and then I'll give you a bath. Because, you stink."

Her "good" hand rubbed at his neck, side and back. "What do you say?" She nearly winced at the question once she asked it; she was quickly becoming a nonfan of talking dogs.

"NO!" He barked. But he stayed in his apologetic position while he said it. "BEAR! BIT! ME!" Well, look at that, he was learning to construct whole phrases.

When she beckoned him, he crawled with his belly close to the ground over to her. Still feeling really badly. And now he stank, too?

""SORRY!" He wanted to go home with her. Make sure she was alright. He was going to stay with her. "HOME!" He looked up with actual puppydog eyes. He'd done such a thing in human form, but he was guessing it looked a lot better with the floppy ears. He hoped that she would be able to forgive him for this. This was the second time that he'd bitten her in their time knowing one another. At least this time she would have her own mind still and not try to eat other people.

"YOU!" he whined then. "CHANGE! TOO!" He winced, anticipating the anger that would rise back up in her at that.

"The bear bit you?" Zoe shook her head, laughing softly. "You're going to have to tell me that story when you can talk normally. This barking isn't exactly the most effective method of communication." She rubbed at him a little more; he did look adorably pathetic.

"You didn't mean to. And, yes, I'm going to change. Take a shower. I probably smell." She sighed and stood one more time, stretching a little. "Com'on."

Without a warning, she started off in a sprint for her home. It was strange taking him there again. He'd been there before, and she hoped he'd be at her place again. She just never thought she'd be taking him there as a dog.

It didn't take long to find her way home. She didn't eat right away, preferring to get the them clean first. She opted for a raw steak for him, and some quick stir fried vegetables for herself. Once they were fed and cleaned, she settled down on the couch to read a little, her hand softly stroking his fur as he settled from his exploring around her home.

It didn't happen right away like it did with some. It certainly took longer than an hour. In fact, she was considering bed when the first pang hit. She called out as her body felt like it was folding in on itself. Pain was not the word for it. It was more, worse, deeper. This was abnormally painful.

She ran. Then he was running too. Forgetting his shame for a moment and catching up to her, wagging his tail again. Panting happily up at her like he had when he'd first found her. Running was good. Jesse wondered if riding in a car with his head out the window would be as exciting as dogs made it seem. He was going to have to find a way to try that. He wondered if Dean would let him ride in that really nice car of his.

Though, she didn't understand what he said when he'd told her she was going to change. He wasn't sure how to articulate it better at the current time, either. That was bothersome.

When they got to her place, he got a bath. He'd been worried about it, but it turned out okay. Then she had a bath and seemed to forget that he'd told her he was human, because she didn't shoo him out. He snuck peaks at her when she wasn't looking. Once done and it was time for food, he thought at first that the idea of raw meat was disgusting, but his dog brain overtook his human one, and he found himself scarfing down the juicy meat quite gladly. It didn't taste bad at all.

Her place smelled good. It was filled with scents of her. Of her life. Each thing had it's own scent, covered with hers. And he could smell himself in the chair he'd sat in. Nobody had been there since him. It was odd, essentially sniffing himself like this. The smell of cigarettes, faint traces of alcohol, something that he would describe as rugged mixed in. He sniffed everything. When he was done, he laid by her and enjoyed the petting.

This was going to be an odd conversation later, he thought.

He could smell her pain when her change began to happen. Her cry hurt his ears. He scrambled up and out of the way.

"CHANGE!" He said, scared. "SORRY! SORRY! HURT!"

Zoe's nails clawed at the couch, digging into the material. Her body was seeking revenge for something, and the gorram dog barking was not helping. She would have winced at the sound of material ripping as her nails turned to very sharp claws, and she would be very mad when she had time to deal with a ruined couch later. For the moment, all that she could notice, her world as it were, was the pain.

She didn't exactly pass out, but it certainly felt as if she were coming back to herself when she realized she was much closer to the ground. Or more, when she lifted up to stand, she was still very close to the ground. She heard something break, and as she turned, almost awkwardly, she thought she saw something move. Was that..a tail?

She hissed at the thing as she tried to chase it, and it didn't take her long to pin it down. She looked around the apartment to see what the tail was attached to, soon realizing it was attached to a body that ...had her eyes?

While she thought about this, she smelled something. It wasn't exactly enemy, but it was in what she knew as her territory. It was animal, a hint of a growl came out. The tip of her tail lightly beat on the floor, even while she stood on the thing with one front paw. She was not alone.

Jesse stopped barking.

All of his senses engaged and he felt himself trembling with the need to start barking again. To return the growl. It had hit some nerve in him. While he knew it was Zoe, he couldn't tell that to one part of his brain that would not shut up.

And he really needed to shut up.

She had become a big cat. He wasn't quite sure what type she was. Not a cheetah, he knew that for certain. Those were tall and very thin. She looked like every bit of her body was packed with muscle, and her paws had very large claws attached to them.

His human part wanted to find amusement at the fact that she'd just chased her tail, but the dog part wanted to engage her in a fight. Or a playful fight at the least. He was a pretty happy dog, and most of his thoughts were playful. But there was the scent of danger in her, and primally he wanted to defend himself. Make himself intimidating.

Especially seeing as she didn't sound happy with him being there.

Zoe lifted to stand, somehow managing not tripping over her own tail. The thing just lifted up and out of the way. The claws were retracted for now, but there was always a chance they'd be out. What the dog was going to have to worry about was the powerful body and the deadly jaw. It was meant for instant kill during attack.

She moved slowly, gauging just how far the noisy thing was. Now and then whiskers would twitch, ears would swivel, but the eyes were on the noisy dog. It made too much noise. The tail followed behind her cat body like a banner. She wasn't very tall, not even for one of the bigger cats, but she was not to be trifled with.

The cat wanted to make the noisy thing go away. Zoe wanted to understand what the hell was going on. She growled, and without warning, pounced at the dog, if only to shut it up for a moment. Thankfully, something in her kept from opening her mouth and biting, which was certainly an instinct that was hard to push back. The body wanted violence, just a little anyway.

Jesse couldn't avoid the attack. He just wasn't fast enough. She was a hunter, he was just a mutt. Playful and loving. He found himself pinned under her. Looking up at the kind of mouth that could snap a neck without even thinking about it.

She seemed annoyed at his barking, so he didn't try to do anything vocally to get her to calm down. Instead, he just didn't resist. Didn't fight back. He drew in those feelings of wanting to defend himself and stayed still.

He hoped that she would come to her own mind soon.

The big cat with an Amazon mind leaned over and sniffed at the dog that was now at her mercy. There were a few snorts as some of the smells were familiar, and others not so much. There were no claws as she held him down. The long tail flicked and curled. Something was coming through. It was animalistic, but it was there in the cat's mind. Perhaps it wasn't right, but it was there.

This was her dog. Her noisy dog. With a soft mew, the larger than the average house cat leaned forward and rubbed her cheeks and neck against the dog's, marking him. It was a little awkward, but as soon as that was done, the cat backed away, knocking a few things over and possibly hitting the dog in the face with the very long tail.

With bit of animal aggression out of the way, Zoe could finally let herself see what she was. That thought alone made her mew softly, a sound that bothered her somewhat. She tried to walk slowly to the bathroom to look at herself in the mirror. It didn't take much thought or planning to leap from the floor to the small, for her long body, sink area. She stared at the cat that stared back at her. There was another soft questioning mew as she tried to figure out just what had happened.

Jesse recognized the rubbing of her cheeks on him as marking territory. He had seen cats on the nature channel do that. He'd also seen cats in real life do it, but he wasn't sure if domesticated animals were really consciously marking territory so much as it felt good.

He didn't remark about it now, but he was going to later. She could be sure of that.

Carefully, he followed her to the bathroom and watched her graceful leap. He was amazed. He'd gotten on his own counter, but it had been more scrabbling and trying to get purchase. She was just up there instantly. With no effort. Amazing.

"SORRY!" He said again. "BEAR! BIT! ME! BIT! YOU! CHANGED!"

He didn't think she'd pounce on him again. She'd marked him. Though the barking, he was sure, would be obnoxious to her cat ears.

Zoe's head swiveled from the mirror to the dog that was barking...again. The tip of her long tail flicked with slight annoyance. Bear bit him. He bit her. She changed. It was the zombies all over again. And, she'd reacted as she had then - with violence. At least this time she hadn't tried to kill him, not exactly.

"Ssschtop." Her voice was awkward, and the fangs that seemed way too long but just right in her mouth made talking difficult. She turned carefully around, and more or less flowed down from the sink to the dog on the ground. Her long tail once more trailing behind her and hitting things that she shouldn't have to worry about.

"No barkeen." She absently licked at her lips, her fangs appearing. It could have been a sign of aggression, or some sort of reminder. "Sssscha."

She lightly butted her head against his. Rubbing her cheek against him again, this time, not so much marking him as before. She was Zoe.

"Ssschorry for pounsscheen." She sat back to look at him, her tail settling at the ground, curled a little towards her feet.

Well. He wasn't sure how to talk to her if she didn't want him to bark. Jesse reached up with a back leg and scratched his ear, trying to think. But he couldn't come up with anything. Every word came out a bark, he'd discovered that. And now, trying to talk without barking, nothing came out at all.

He sighed.

The second time she rubbed herself on him he got to pay attention to the way it felt, since he wasn't in fear of his life. It felt strange, fur against fur, but nice. She was warm. He discovered a desire to want to lay on her. Not in a sexual way at all. Just lay against her somehow and absorb that heat.

He licked his nose and watched her carefully, hoping that she'd get that her demand for no barking also meant that he couldn't talk to her.

Zoe stared at him; it really wasn't that uncomfortable her to be in quiet. Then again, she was usually the one listening to someone else talk. Her head tilted as she watched him, waiting.

He wasn't a bad dog. At least he wasn't barking like before, but...he was a dog. Did dogs know any other way to speak other than barking? They whined, but barking seemed to be their chosen method. She snorted, but she couldn't leave him mute, could she?

"Not too loud." She stood and started toward the living room, but halfway there, she remembered some of the sounds she'd heard during the pain. She wasn't sure she wanted to see what had happened. "Neighberssscha."

Her nose wrinkled, and there was a whisker twitch. She had something of a lisp which wasn't all that attractive, was it?

He could probably do that, not too loud.

Jesse followed Zoe out to the living room, not much looking forward to the reaction she'd have to the rending of the couch. He had a feeling that he was really going to get it when she was back in full control again.

For now, he was going to just stay quiet. Not draw attention to himself until she was over the damage that had been done. When she was calmed down, or more calm anyway, then he'd try to strike up conversation again.

The smaller of the so-called big cats moved through the living room carefully, then sat down not far from the ruined couch and the fallen bit of glass whatever it had been. Her tail wrapped loosely about her feet as she sat there. Her whiskers twitched still in annoyance.

"Ssschtupid." Zoe snorted at the sight before turning to look at him, somehow avoiding stepping on her tail. Even though she hadn't been in the body long, she was more aware of it now than she had been right after the change. "What izscha thisscha? What izscha goeen on?"

Her voice had a hint of growl in it. She was looking for somewhere off the ground to lounge. She didn't mind moving on the ground, but she wanted to be higher, to get a better vantage point than this. Finally she spotted a decent counter space and climbed limited pieces of furniture to finally land with amazing ease, even to herself, on the counter and stretch out along it. She was going to have to do a lot of cleaning tomorrow.

"Why are you a doc," the 'g' turning to a 'c' which only irritated her more. "And I'm a cat?"

Jesse's eyes watched carefully. Following her every movement. He was no longer wary of getting pounced on, but she was fascinating to observe.

"WERE!" He tried. His bark wasn't as loud. It was still mostly bark, with a little ruff mixed in. Lower in tone, too. Quiet enough for her, he hoped, because he didn't know if he could make it any better than this. "BEAR! BIT! ME!" He told her as a way of saying he couldn't be sure why they were different, but reminding her too that his source hadn't been a dog.

He moved over by the counter once she was settled and sat by it. A little unnerved about having such a toothy claw-filled thing above him like that, but trusting that she would be able to keep herself from hurting him out of instinct. Or seeing him as prey.

The end of Zoe's tail dangled down, and now and then, as if taunting him, it might "accidentally" lightly hit him. Her tongue lapped at her lips and flicked over her rather long canines. It wasn't that she was threatening him, she was thinking.

"Were? What izscha were?" The large cat continued to watch the dog from the angle she rather liked. "Why are we like thisscha?" Now and then her nose would wrinkle at the lisp still. Her tail continued to lightly beat against him.

"Sschleep sschoon?" She yawned, showing off all her teeth again. Frustration, confusion, and shifting made for one tired kitty. That and she'd spent much of her prior to shifting trying to run herself down.

How to explain a were to Zoe? How to explain it to anyone, really. It was one of those things that seemed to be inherently known by all. He'd never thought he'd need to find words for what it all boiled down to.

Certainly he'd never expected to have to do it as a dog.

He snorted, frustrated with himself. "MAN! THEN! WOLF! THEN! MAN!" Did that make sense? "WERE! WOLF! CHANGE! BACK!"

He sort of wished he could write. Or that Zoe had a W encyclopedia in her house. Anything to make this easier. Despite knowing mostly one syllable words, there just didn't seem to be good ones for this.

And he certainly couldn't tell her the why of any of it. He didn't know, himself. Why did the bite of a werewolf change a person into a werewolf? How did they come about to begin with? Did the wolf come first, or the person? Was it a disease, or magical?

Jesse just tilted his head in a sort of doggy shrug.

"SLEEP! GOOD!" He agreed.

Zoe didn't like the answer. Man, then wolf, then man. If she got her fingers back, she was going to do research, or ask someone to do it for her. She didn't understand this concept exactly, and Jesse seemed to be all to comfortable with it. There were times that her being from the future did her a great disservice. Her tail flicked again as she thought.

She moaned softly, the closest thing the big cat had to a sigh. This was definitely one of the stranger things she'd had to do in the City, and she had a feeling it wasn't over. Not as long as she stayed here. With a slight nod, she flowed from the counter down the ground, landing rather easily beside him.

"Sschleep." Her head bumped against his. She wasn't angry at him, just frustrated with not understanding, not knowing, not being in control. She felt at a loss, and while she'd been in such a situation more than once, she still didn't like it. "Sschleep with me?"

Jesse's eyes closed with the head bump. It was a very comforting thing. He wondered why he didn't have the urge to do it. Though, he supposed, he'd never seen dogs bump one another on the head. Sniff butts, maybe. And he wasn't about to sniff Zoe's butt. That would just upset her more.

"COURSE!" He replied, ears perking up.

His desire to fall into a furry pile with Zoe was going to happen. He was going to get to curl up with her - she'd probably do most of the actual curling - and sleep.

Jesse didn't know if she'd want to sleep on her bed when they were both animals, or try to make due with the torn up couch.

"YOU! LEAD!"

While she didn't like the idea of fur in her bed, the Amazon wasn't going to sleep on that couch. She was going to have it replaced or more likely repaired. Her body pressed slightly against his, her tail trialing along behind her, tracing the same little trail as she made her way to the bedroom. The bed was easily large enough for them in their animal forms, and it was possibly more comfortable than a ruined couch.

She didn't wait to see if he would follow, and for a moment, she actually wondered if Jesse was thinking of something more than sleep. In this body, she didn't find him attractive in the mating sense, and she had a feeling she'd hurt him if he tried anything that was more than sleeping.

Before she actually climbed into the bed, she checked out the windows to the room, making sure everything was secure, or as secure as a cat can be sure of. She would have preferred having an open window, but she would make due. With the perimeter checked, she jumped into bed, lying down.

Jesse followed her without hesitation, and while she checked her security, he jumped onto the bed, not waiting. It was a comfortable bed. He turned around, then again, and once more, before laying down. Once he was down, he couldn't figure out why he'd turned.

When Zoe got onto the bed, Jesse scooted himself over to her, carefully, so his nails wouldn't shred anything, and pushed himself right to her side.

He actually wasn't thinking of doing more. The dog didn't think the cat a suitable mating partner, and it was entirely too weird for Jesse normally. He didn't think it would be fun in any way to have sex as an animal, even if it was with another animal.

He licked her face tenderly, though. The dog's version of a head bump. His tail was wagging a bit, knocking into her every so often.

The cat didn't mind the affection, no matter what scientist might say about this particular species. There was some rearranging, and soon the long body and tail were curled up somewhat around the dog's mottled furry body. The mew was appreciative and soft, and she didn't even mind the beating of the tail.

They were a strange pair, the big cat and the mutt, but Zoe was comfortable curled up as she was with him. Her dog. The cat had claimed the dog even if it wasn't part of its own kind. The cat gave the dog a playful nip at the neck, careful to not actually bit hard or in some way that would kill him.

"Ssschleep now." The cat's eyes closed, and Zoe was glad he was there. Even if he was the one who did this to her, she couldn't think of anyone she'd rather have around during such an odd time.

Jesse laid his head on top of her after the nip and demand to sleep now. He rubbed his face briefly against her and then was still again. He could hear her breathing and the beating of her heart, and it soothed him.

Finally, he followed her example and closed his eyes too.
