Are you there, God? It's me, Batman (Jesse)
It was one of those nights. It had nothing to do with having missed patrol because she was helping out a certain "leprechaun;" no, it had everything to do with some recent modifications to her suit. It felt awkward. Or maybe it was that last hit from that jackass who thought he'd get a good one in before he went down. The Batman took a very hard hit, but the damn "man" didn't stay down. A good knock to the head and shoulder didn't mean the dark knight was out for the count.
With the burglars trussed up for the local PD, the Batman had left the scene to look for more criminals to apprehend. It was strange to fill her nights with this, to live a double life, but she was beginning to wonder who exactly she was living a double life with. Those she knew were either gone or busy, or she met at odd times - Sweeney was becoming a very strange recurring figure in her life story. No one knew her well enough to actually feel like she was hiding anything. Though, there were times she did want to tell someone. To share this news so that it wasn't such a burden, even if she wasn't having to actively keep a secret from anyone.
The ledge didn't look that far away; in fact, the readings in her helmet told her that she could make the jump easily. That had been the plan. Only, it didn't go like she expected. Something in the suit felt clumsy, as if it were banging against something else, but it wasn't enough to be overly distracting. Or that's what she thought. She got to the ledge and took the leap. Faith was the only thing that would keep her up as the suit cracked, shifted. There was a sharp pain at her back, and her helmet moved - it shouldn't move. Rather than making a landing, even a bad one, on the other side of the gap between buildings, the Batman fell, bouncing off the closest fire escape.
It was only willpower and the need to keep the damn secret that got her to act, to pull herself out of a fall that could kill her. Her body twisted in ways that practice, over and over with Alfred and training simulations, and she managed to catch another fire escape, pulling her into a trajectory that would hopefully end with her in trash, not jack-knifing off the edge of an open dumpster. The thud and loss of breath without the crunch of spinal damage told her that she had made it, but her mind wouldn't go further than that.
Thankfully Alfred was monitoring her. He made a call he had a feeling the Batman wouldn't like, but he felt if anyone could be trusted with a secret, especially since Zoe Washburne seemed to trust the man enough to make sure Alfred gave him instructions to protect certain people in the City should anything happen to her, it would be the City's resident God. He didn't bother breathing a sigh of relief; his voice was level, commanding: "Batman needs you; here's the address." was all Jesse Custer would get before Alfred hung up.
Seemed Fate had decided to help Zoe with one of those big questions issues out a little tonight.
