That's just not right (Anita - Challenge 1)
It wasn't a spectacular party that he was going to be attending. Just some thing. Nothing special at all. He hadn't even bothered to wear a tux. Just a suit. Not even one of his best ones. Just a nice one. He really didn't care. There were other things on his mind. Like the witch, and if she'd managed to do anything to help Clark. Getting the city back in order, getting back into doing things that he should have been doing all along. Being alive again instead of in the half dead state of loss like some high school kid.

He was late, of course, so he had to park his car around the corner and walk past a very dark alley to get to the hotel where the party was going to be held. Something that didn't even concern him these days. Hadn't for a long time. Not since the dark alley he'd been in when he was a child. He knew there was danger in there, and knew that they were just ripe with criminals. And cliches.

So it was really no surprise to Bruce when he hears screaming coming from the back of the alley. He didn't even roll his eyes in response, because he'd kind of expected something like that to happen.

Bruce pivoted on his heel and went into the darkness, ready to encounter thugs robbing a poor woman. He was almost to the end when he encountered the sight. What was really going on. And that was nothing like what he'd been expecting.

There were two of them, alright. And a lady, too. But they certainly weren't robbing her. They weren't doing anything expected to her. Not even trying to rape her. Which would have been disturbing in it's own right, but Bruce would have been able to deal with that.

What he could not deal with was the fact that the two men appeared to be eating the poor woman. Alive. One gnawing on her shoulder, the other chewing on her lower leg. There was blood everywhere. The suspects themselves didn't look particularly normal either. Not that chewing on a human being was normal. But their skin was mottled. Cold looking. What corpses should look like, he thought.

For the first time in what seemed like forever, Bruce had no idea what to do.

"I sense a disturbance in the force."

Anita felt the animating energy even from across town. Hell, it practically pulled her out of bed. Granted, she wasn't doing anything but watching whatever movie was on the City-HBO-equivalent that night. But even if she'd been doing something important, she would have felt the need to investigate this. Besides it being her area of expertise, she was feeling rather supernaturally-deprived. Spike, though a vampire, hasn't gotten her involved in anything spooky and no one else she had met qualified at all.

She shrugged her leather jacker over her tight black t-shirt and jeans, then zipped up her boots. She took the stairs two at a time and burst through the door, scaring a middle-aged couple carrying grocery bags. They'll get over it.

Anita followed the pull of the cold power animating the zombies through town, through twisting streets that didn't dare try to pull their switching-places bullshit on her that night. She was a woman with a mission....and a gun. Two, in fact. And a backpack full of witchy stuff.

When she finally got to the alley where the two zombies had found a victim, she had to shove aside some staring, clueless (but hot) idiot. She sliced her hand and let it drip on the ground, gaining the attention of the zombies. Blood of a necromancer trumped human flesh any day. Luckily she had gotten there before too much damage was caused, a good plastic surgeon and you would never know the girl had been someone's dinner momentarily.

She summoned the zombies, let them drink her blood for a little then shoved them off. She pulled out the salt and threw it at them, then finished the ritual that would send them back to their graves. Luckily, neither had been murdered or this whole shtick would have been much more difficult. Even if she had chopped the zombie of a murdered person to pieces, those pieces would continue to crawl after their murderer until he/she was dead. It was, literally, a nightmare.

That done, she sagged onto the ground, hands on her knees. She started to wrap a bandage (also handily in her backpack of animating and Executioner tools) and allowed herself the feel the anger. Someone had left zombie roaming around the City, and that pissed her off. She would have to trace the energy back and eliminate the threat.

She rolled her neck, catching sight of both the hot starer at one end of the alley and the sobbing victim lying at the other end. She supposed it was up to her to try and comfort the nearly-eaten girl, unless the pretty idiot regained his composure and took the burden away from her.

Anita was not good at comforting people. Probably came from spending most of her time with the dead. They didn't really need comforting much....especially those that already knew they were dead. The ones that didn't, they were the worst.

Bruce watched, unsure of what was going on, and at first unable to move a single muscle. He'd never encountered anything like this in his entire life. But when the attackers went down, he went into action. His cell phone came out and he called for an ambulance. He moved out of the shadows and to the woman who had been hurt.

He also needed to make sure that the strange girl who had come out of nowhere was alright, but there was more blood from the other. She required assistance first.

His jacket came off, and he tore the lining out. It wasn't very absorbent, but it would do until the paramedics could arrive. He shredded it into two pieces, using one on each wound. The woman cried and blubbered at him the entire time, begging him for answers. But not one question that came out of her mouth could be answered, not by him, anyway. He had a feeling that the other one, the one that had cut herself, stopped the attack, she would know. And he would ask. Just not while this woman was around to hear what the response might be.

"The ambulance is on it's way. Okay? You're going to be okay." Bruce soothed her the best that he could. It wasn't really his thing to do, but she was crying so hard she needed something. He was slightly afraid she might drive herself into shock if she didn't calm down. It was really a shame he wasn't dressed for the occasion, he had a little bit of sedative on his other belt. "I'm going to go make sure that she's okay too. I won't leave your sight."

Bruce stood and moved to the dark haired girl and knelt.

"Are you alright?" He asked the question but didn't give her a chance to answer before he spoke again. "Listen carefully, whatever happened, don't say a word about it until that woman is safely being driven away. I don't think she can take it, whatever it is. But I very much need to know."

Anita narrowed her eyes and looked up at the tall, apparently bossy man.

"Yea, I'm fine. Ignore the blood. Occupational hazard. And I'm not an idiot, I know this is a whole different kind of place. I can't expect anyone to understand, not even you. But I'm willing to explain once I get a chance to refuel. I mean that literally, not in some esoteric sense. I'm starving."

Rolling back on her heels, she fluidly pulled herself to her feet. Anita was very proud of herself for pulling it off and not stumbling from the blood loss. Two points Anita, one point hot stranger.

Bruce only nodded. He would gladly exchange a meal for the knowledge of what the hell had just happened. At this point, he would have bought her dinner for an entire month just to know.

What had happened was not anything that should have been possible. Even in this city, he would have said previously.

The ambulance came, loaded up the woman, made sure that Bruce and the other female were alright, and then they were gone. It was either remarkably quick, or Bruce wasn't paying attention to anything due to what was on his mind.

When the alley was quiet again, he turned to face the dark haired girl and put his hands on his hips. His eyes shifted to the space where the attack had happened before returning to her.

"Food's on me." What had she done? Why had she cut herself to do it? There were so many questions, and he felt anxious for the answers. "My name is Bruce. And I apologize for being short with you."

Anita extended a hand for him to shake.

"Name's Anita. I have to say, Bruce, it's nice to meet you even if the circumstances are less than stellar. Returning two zombies to their graves is not my idea of a night out on the town, more like a hard day's work. But, of course. We agreed to talk over dinner. Which is your treat, thanks."

Smiling up at him with her eyes as well as her mouth (hey, she was a master of the cold-eyed smile, and this situation thankfully didn't call for it. Yet.), Anita speculated aloud.

"So do you think that girl will invent herself an explanation for what happened tonight and start to believe it? I find most do, unless they have a reason to remember. Where would you like to go to eat? I've only been to one or two restaurants since I got here, I tend to stick with what I like. Mexican and middle eastern food. Dinner's on you, your choice as to venue."

She surprised herself by laughing a little.

"Lay on, MacBruce. The night and your explanation await."

Bruce started walking back to his car, certain that the young lady he'd just met was more than smart enough to figure out to follow. She had a quick wit, and was fast in the heat of the moment. Bruce was pretty certain she didn't have the particular affliction of John Coffey.

"I'm absolutely positive that she'll create a new scenario in her head. That's a lot for just a bystander to deal with, let alone having to live through it. I can't say for sure what she'll come up with, but it's not going to be zombies." He paused for a moment and then looked at Anita pointedly. "You said zombies, didn't you? I didn't mishear?"

Imagine. Zombies. Those were the things that made up the black and white horrors of his childhood. The late Saturday nights sneaking out to the living room to watch when he knew damned well he'd have nightmares about it just like his parents warned. Zombies didn't exist in real life. Except, apparently, they did.

When they reached the car, the Lamborghini it turned out, Bruce held the passenger side door open for Anita. Quiet and deeply concentrating on the prospect of actual zombies. He drove somewhat automatically in the direction of a middle eastern restaurant. She'd mentioned it, and he had no preferences. It was a little on the upscale side of things, something that Bruce had gotten used to doing instinctively when he was being a Wayne and not The Bat.

He didn't have to open her door upon exit, the valet did that. The doorman might have commented on Anita's lack of proper attire had she not been with Bruce. As it was, he just sat them at one of the best tables and walked away.

Meanwhile, Bruce found himself remembering that he was in the company of another person.

"Sorry." He said. Pointed to his head. "Zombies."

Bemused, Anita followed where he led. Hey, it wasn't every day a guy with a Lamborghini took you out to dinner. Even for her life, this was something special. Besides, there was no Jean-Claude here to pamper her and make her feel cherished. She may as well get some of the nicer things in life however they came.

She had to laugh, though, when they got to the restaurant and were seated with menus before he could even get past the word 'zombie'.

"Yea, I'm told it messes with people's heads. Where I'm from, it's been a fact of life for a while now. oh, and vampires have legal rights too. can't just kill them anymore, you need a legal order of execution. That's my day job...er, night job. Other night job. All my jobs are night. Dammit."

Burying her head in the menu, she muttered, "Can't even act normally for one night. What's wrong with you?" A bit louder, she said, "Oooh, they have kibbeh! Good choice, Bruce."

Bruce did what he could to really understand what Anita was saying. Vampires weren't entirely new to him. Especially now that he lived in The City. They seemed to be everywhere. And all different types too. But needing a legal document saying that they are allowed to be killed? It went beyond what Bruce thought was acceptable. It was hard for him to fathom any sort of bad person having rights.

But maybe that's because of how he'd grown up.

"Night jobs aren't all so bad." It was the truth, but he'd said it more to reassure her. He also ignored the part where she talked to herself for the same reason.

He hadn't even realized what sort of place he'd brought her to until she started talking about the food. Then he had to actually look at the menu instead of stare blankly at it.

"Good choice, indeed." He was such an idiot sometimes. Bruce shook his head at himself.

"You'll have to excuse me, I'm still just a little stunned by all of this. We don't really have to deal much in the way of zombies and vampires where I come from. Though I'm not sure why that's any odder in my mind than mutant half crocodile men and man bats."

"yea, the night is a great time to work. All dark and scary. I guess I didn't really have a choice, I was born this way." Anita left it pruposely cryptic. If he wanted to know, he would ask.

Anita's brow knitted as she took in Bruce's words.

"Crocodile men? Man bats? And I thought my life was weird. I mean, trolls and Red Caps and all. I'm still trying to get used to the fact that I met Catwoman, for Christ's sake. For me, vampires were facts of life and courses of study in college. I actually have a Bachelors in Preturnatural Biology, if you can believe that. I used to keep my only contact with them professional...as in, I executed them and that was it. How I ended up dating more than one, I still have a hard time believing. Anyways, zombies are only dangerous if ordered to be or if they died by murder. God help a murderer if someone raises their zombie, they'll be literally torn apart. But all the zombies eating brains thing is crap. They only do it if ordered to.....in fact, most of the zombies I've raised don't even realize they're dead until you force it on them."

Looking over at the approaching waiter, she smiled and said in a low voice, "I think we should order some things and continue this when we're more alone. Not that you're ever really alone in a restaurant, of course."

Bruce made a smile the best he could and tried to laugh at the mention of Catwoman. It was hard for him to react any other way. So many years of covering things up made it hard to stop. Even if you were aware that somebody might know everything about your life.

Because apparently, in their world, you were a comic book.

"Preternatural biolo....dating?"

Really, it was all too weird. Even in light of the city they were sitting in, and the things that Bruce himself had been through in his lifetime. Zombies and vampires, everything she was saying. It was outright strange. Unfortunately, it all also made sense to him.

Because, honestly, if you'd died and were brought back, how would you know? If somebody didn't tell you, wouldn't you just wander around trying to go about life? Bruce thought that he would.

It was interesting, however, because she was some kind of law enforcement. Bruce was also some kind of law enforcement. Not that he was going to blurt that particular slice of information out. Anita didn't seem to have made the Bruce With Nice Car/Bruce Wayne connection yet, and it might be better if it stayed that way.

He agreed silently that they should order and send away the waitstaff, so Bruce did just that. Vaguely paying attention to the words he was saying, he got some kind of platter meal. He watched the retreat and turned his attentions back on to Anita. Far more interesting than whatever food he'd just agreed to eat.

"Killer Croc." Bruce nodded. "And the Man Bat was actually female once. It's kind of a really long story."

Anita caught the smile at the mention of Catwoman. Catwoman. Man Bat. Bruce. Spiffy car. Man, was she slow to catch on.

Shit, woman. You might be having dinner with Bruce Wayne. Try not to act any less cool than you already have. Like there was a chance of that now.

"Man Bat was actually female once? Like a trans-gender villain? Man, that's gotta be near the top of the list on weirdness for evil bastards. I had a pan-shifter once who was into kinky bedroom stuff and torture. He wasn't a girl or she-male or anything. Though he did have a thing going with this hermaphrodite werehyena or something.....it was a while ago. I don't remember all the details." Even though she did, and just didn't want to talk about it anymore. Never should have brought it up. "Anyways. Obviously very different worlds we come from."

Scratching the back of her neck, she smiled, a little sheepishly. Freaking Batman was taking her out to dinner. Even if it was only to pick her brain over zombies. A girl could dream.

"More like the daughter of the original Man Bat, but not really any less strange at the end of the day."

Bruce sat and listened to Anita's description of the sorts of people she'd run into in her world, and was kind of glad that he didn't exist in it. He wasn't exactly sure he could deal with that kind of thing. The Joker was enough of a pain.

"Very different worlds. But apparently, that's what makes this world go around."

He picked up his wine glass as the waiter finished filling it and disappeared again.

"To absurdity." He lifted it to toast.

Anita snorted.

"Oh, you have no idea. But people are people everywhere, right? Except when they're superheros and vampires and so on...or maybe, especially then."

She clinked her glass against his.

"To absurdity and those of us who persevere in spite of it."

Taking a small sip, she rolled the wine around her tongue and swallowed. Damn, that was good. She'd have to start frequenting better restaurants.

Bruce nodded briefly, thinking of all the absurd things in his life, and wondered if he actually did preserve in spite of it, or if it was something that he needed in order to go on.

Who would he be, where would he be, without something to fight for? Or against?

Better to not think on that now.

As dinner came, he decided to change the subject. No need to continue talking about rotting corpses while they ate. Or the strange worlds they'd come from.

"Tell me more about you, Anita." It usually got the ball rolling.

Anita happily picked up her fork as the waiter brought over her platter of kebabs. Grilled meat and vegetables together? On a long pointy stick? It just didn't get better than that.

Chewing her first, wonderful bite of marinated steak, she thought about how to give the 30-second version of her life.

"Well, I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Obviously, you know that in my world, zombies and vampires are kind of matter-of-fact elements of life. I got a degree in preturnatural biology and debated going to grad school, but a job came my way and I took it. I'm an animator, which means I can raise zombies. You'd be surprised how in demand that particular calling has turned out to be by me. I also learned to become a federally licensed vampire executioner. Pretty soon, that's how I was known. Just as the Executioner. Great fun at parties, let me tell you."

Pulling some onion and pepper off the kebab with a fork, she said, "Do you want me to keep going and save questions for the end, or do you have some now?"

Anita popped the veggies into her mouth and waited for his response.

"I don't think it makes any difference when I ask the questions. They're all painfully obvious anyway, and if I give myself a chance to think about it, I'll realize the answer is already there."

Bruce shook his head. Why it should be absurd to him that there were licensed vampire executioners out there, he had no idea.

"I suppose the most amazing thing to me still is that this one city holds people from so many different worlds. You never know where somebody might have come from. Or when, for that matter."

Anita smiled at his still apparent confusion.

"It is pretty amazing, the way things end up here. Lots of culture clash. I mean, there must be people from alternate futures and pasts and all sorts of stuff that would make physicist cream their pants. All I know is, nobody from my home is here and it makes getting along here damn hard."

She stared down at her plate, eyes far away.

"It's the same, but different, and different enough to frustrate me."
