For the benefit of Messere Achilles and also others who may be newly arrived and overwhelmed by the local vocabulary, here is a list of words I have been keeping as I learn them. Until now it has only been used for my own reference, so some definitions may be more useful to the rest of you than others. They are also presented more or less in the order I learned them, rather than in some logical organization, for which I apologise.
Phone: a communication device similar to a Sending Stone, but much more common.
Waypoints: Magical travel nodes that allow quick movement from one specific place to another specific place
DOA: Department of Outlander Affairs, a branch of local government
Video: a play that is magically recorded to be watched over again
Bot: a type of human, called “artificial life” by assholes. Some are trained as assassins.
Leggings: a type of close-fitting trousers made of soft, stretchy fabric
AA/NA: Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous; support groups for those suffering from addiction to alcohol and drugs (Update: they also welcome those with other forms of addiction)
Steroids: a broad class of drugs covering both medicines made by doctors to ease swelling and inflammation and drugs used to increase strength and aggression
Speedball: a drug mix that combines a stimulant and a depressant
Josh Groban: a famous singer from the world called Earth
Soundtrack: a magical recording of music that can be played an indefinite number of times
BFF: Best Friend Forever, used to describe any close friends
Fight Club: Similar to the Brawls, but with more rules. Fights are called before death can result.
Pumpkin Spice Latte: a coffee-and-milk drink that tastes like liquid pie
YOLO: (pronounced yoh-low) You Only Live Once. A battle cry urging bravery to the point of recklessness
Twitter: a hub of communication; like a busy town square, but conversations occur through phones
Heads up: a warning of danger one should look out for; sometimes used lightly, to inform others of information
Hell: a religious concept from Earth - an afterlife for those who have been evil by their religion’s standards
Mechanic: a smith of things with moving parts
Bonkershits: describes a state of madness
Earth: a world which exists in many very different versions, but most have similar geography and history.
Car: a carriage powered by an engine, similar to the steamworks produced by the dwarves
Omnic: a type of golem specific to one version of earth
Firefighter: a professional douser of flaming buildings.
Hotel: an inn; can be possessed by demons
Musical: Similar to an opera. A play with songs in it.
Chocolate: Very different from home. Sweeter, creamier, usually solid rather than for drinking. Delicious.
Dinosaur: a general category covering very large lizards, but not dragons.
Cupcakes: Exactly as one would imagine from the name. Small cakes that would fit in a cup. Decorated with an unreasonable amount of sugary paste called frosting or icing (Update if the difference between frosting and icing is learned). Frosting is thick, icing is thin (watery drizzle). Most of what is on cupcakes is frosting.
Brownies: Small chocolate cakes, not decorated, square or rectangular.
Cookies: Similar to biscuits. More complicated and sweeter.
Bacon: Means sliced pork belly here, rather than back bacon
TARDIS: a magical traveling device, used to travel through both space and time.
Kit-Kat: a type of chocolate-covered biscuit. Crispy.
Hockey: a game (update: played on ice skates)
Beer pong: a drinking game (update: played by tossing small balls toward cups of beer; success is rewarded by obligating the opponent to drink)
Halloween: A local holiday, similar to All Souls. Costumes and sweets are important components. Religious for some, secular for others.
Chill: A state of relaxation. Not related to temperature.
Donuts: Ring-shaped pastries, fried, sometimes decorated
Mercury: a planet near the Earths. Can be “in retrograde,” which means it appears to go backward and causes misfortune. Also the name of a god in at least one Earth religion.
Bounce House: a large tent with a floor inflated by air, designed for recreational jumping
Appletini: a very sweet alcoholic drink, ostensibly apple-flavored
Pharmacology: the study of medicines and their proper dosage
Bagel: a dense, ring-shaped bread, often served with cream cheese or smoked salmon
Christmas: an Earth holiday, religious in origin but often celebrated by the non-religious as well. Celebrations include lights, decorated trees, and giving gifts.
Muffin: refers to an undressed cupcake here
Cowboy: one who herds cows; uniform includes a broad-brimmed double-peaked hat and riding boots
Jeep: a specific type of car, used for travel through wilderness
Trampoline: a platform for recreational jumping
Video Games: similar to the video, but the watcher interacts with the play
Shitbox: a term for a car which is old and not well-maintained
Golf Cart: a very small car
Bike: a two-wheeled transportation rig, powered by foot-pedals
Sugar: earth slang for affection
Plug: slang term meaning to advertise
Burlesque: dance performance featuring very little clothing
Pizza: a flat bread covered in sauce, melted cheese, and a variety of meats and vegetables
Green: earth slang for money, used because their currency is green in color
Okay Boomer: a phrase used to suggest that a person is elderly and uneducated
Shattered: earth slang for drunk
B&B: Bed and breakfast, a type of inn which offers the aforementioned
Scrolling: to move a screen up or down, like reading a scroll
Blowout: a large party, or a hairstyle. Context normally makes it clear which is being referred to.
Movie: another word for video
Womb Eviction Day: what Alexis calls her birthday
Yahoo: a madman
Psychological Thriller: a mystery movie rife with suspense
Hot Stuff: a compliment to a person’s physique
Hot: attractive, sexually
Food Coma: a sleepy state following unrestrained feasting
Thanksgiving: a regional Earth holiday to celebrate one’s blessings with a feast
Soda: a bubbly drink, non-alcoholic
Piano: a musical instrument, similar to a harpsichord
Superhero: Warriors with magical powers or unusually great strength
Emoji: small drawings that appear in the electronic board of keys, used to indicate emotions or facial expressions
Microwave: a device for cooking food very quickly. Imparts no flavor.
America: a region of earth
Cool: exciting, stylish, or good. Not related to temperature
Karaoke: singing with recorded music, usually in a tavern
Burpees: an exercise combining a push-up and jumping-jack
Korea: a region of Earth
Chuseok: a harvest festival celebrated in Korea
Football: a game similar to ballgame as it’s played in Kirkwall, but with much more stopping and complex rules, and forward passes of the ball are allowed; also used to mean a game similar to ballgame as it’s played in Ferelden, but also with more complicated rules.
Tarot Cards: a deck of cards with symbolic drawings used for fortune-telling.
Bon Jovi: a group of Earth musicians
Margarita: a citrus-based alcoholic drink
Poker: an Earth card game similar to Wicked Grace in that different combinations of cards are more valuable than others
Wassup: a friendly greeting
Bling: jewelry
Boyfriend: a male person one is courting; does not necessarily imply a physical relationship the way "lover" would; also does not necessarily imply intentions of marriage
Girlfriend: the same, but regarding a female person
Cruller: a type of donut; lumpy
Jesus Christ: a demigod and major figure of the Earth religion that developed Christmas
Bro: a friend
Brofessor: a mashed word of "bro" and "professor," implying one who teaches friends
