JACK & BILL: I have a favour I'd like to ask you two. Though it might be a lark at the same time.

I intend to pick up stakes and move to the south of France, near Monte Carlo. Call it a new line of work. However, I can't sail my boat halfway across the world without hands. It's a good-sized boat, though not a proper ship. About cutter size, so I can't work it alone.

Interested? Or do you think perhaps Anne would be interested? I intended to set sail next week.

JACK: You told me you know how to sail. I'm planning to take Gypsy from the Bahamas over to the south of France. If your father says yes, I wondered if you might like to meet me in Gibraltar and help take her in the rest of the way.

Edited to add: ANNE: Same question as above. Feel like a long sail from Freeport to Monte Carlo with Jack and my son and me?

We're definitely onboard for this plan. Though it may just be myself, or we may be leaving Bill shipside when we get to Carlo, I'll have to ask him, not entirely sure if he's allowed back or not."

Mm. If he's got problems, so be it. Wonder if Anne would be up for a long haul. And If you can sail a cutter with two hands - three if my son signs on - you're madder than me. But that might be a compliment, I guess.

I've no doubt she would, she does tend to like this kind of thing. And I'm quite sure I'm far far more mad than you, dove.

I'll change this to add her. It'd be nice to spend time with Anne, it's been a long time.

You're mad in the most engaging way, my dear, she said with friendly affection.

You, dove, are a flatterer of the worst sort. The honest sort.

If your father's all right with it. I might only have been seeing him for six weeks or so, but I have seen that gritting-his-teeth-stressed bit. I don't want to be on its receiving end.

I agree, but still, at least tell him if not ask. I don't want you making the Atlantic sail, but you should still probably explain yourself when you go haring off to Gibraltar next week.

I obviously don't want you lying to him, but if anyone could pull it off, it'd be you. I can't manage it, and that's no small feat.

Of course I'm interested, it'll be nice to be asea again, if you think you need another pair of hands.

Gypsy's about cutter size, so at least three good hands is probably best. And you can get off in Gibraltar if you want to, even; my son is going to come down and help out. Apparently he's a proper rigging monkey in his time.

He's my boyfriend's son with his first wife, but his wife died, and apparently in some world, Jack grows up with me for a mum. It's completely mad, but I'm awfully fond of him already. I just don't want him making the Atlantic sail.

I didn't start sailing long hauls until I was twenty or so. He can wait. But Gibraltar to Monte Carlo along the coastline should be a doddle.

That makes sense as well. At least you've got one who's happy at sea, mine are landlubbers through and through.

Technically Aaron's got two boys, but they're the ... same, I suppose. The same boy at age five and age fifteen. I don't know if the little one will like to sail or not.

Ah, of course, there's a few of those around, grown-kids who are displaced in time even while the younger ones are still growing. Something of a trend around here, actually.

Oh they love talking to people. The Triad is ... hell if I know, they're young adults, expecting sprogs of their own in the fall. I do know there are a few of the younger ones around though.

Don't know that there's really that much to tell, but I wouldn't know, since I'm not the one it's happened to.
