Dareshta nudged Zeta forward with her knees. Luca had wanted to go forward with the scouts but his father refused to let him go without an adult to keep an eye on him. It wasn’t the charge of Sentinels to watch children. Eventually, with the addition of another Sentinel to the party, her husband felt comfortable letting Dari and Luca go ahead on a scouting ride.
So far, the land they had seen was beautiful. The sun was streaming down and she could see the warm sun and open air was making her son light up. He truly had needed this. All of the Wanderers had been strangely on edge in the Sapphire Domain, and more conservative with allowing the children to explore outside the camp’s edges. Loose navy pants with a white shirt, tied with a green sash showed his family ties, as clearly as her flowing red skirt, gold and green embroidered top, and gold jewelry at her neck ears and wrists did. Her horse was as embroidered as her clothing, though the traditional bells and coins had been removed for the scouting trip. They were also different in that they steered their mounts more with their knees because they refused to use bits, opting instead for using simple halters.
“Watch me Mamma!” Luca said, galloping his pony forward towards a grouping of trees. The closer they were getting to the city, the less trees were gathered. The thicker forests seemed to be on the northern end. Scouts had already returned declaring the northern side unusable for setting up camp. Others had gone to scout the west. Today, they headed east.
“Luca!” she cried nudging her own horse forward after him, her own personal Sentinel beside her.
Luca had dismounted just inside the trees, having no clear path to run his horse without fear of hurting himself or his mount. She jumped down beside him as she neared. He gave her a wide grin and she cuffed him lightly on the head making him laugh out loud. Looking back, she saw the Sentinel holding back a bit, still mounted, walking his horse carefully.
Dareshta led the way to where she thought she heard a stream when they came to an opening in the trees.
“Tsk, Luca,” she said, grabbing her son back as she saw clear signs of a person’s or persons’ habitation, “Someone is living here, we will go another way.”
