Who: Nate Roth and Laura Meyhew.
What: Nate goes hunting for his girl. It doesn't end well.
When: Shortly after Nate receives the news about Abi.
Where: Chicago (Sideway's World)
Warnings: Angst. Revelations. Betrayal. Heartbreak.
Part of him didn't want to believe anything in Betty's message. It just wasn't possible. Abigail, his baby sister, couldn't be dead. Just like Paul, who had been one of his closest friends since they'd started fighting this losing war, was still alive somewhere. They were wrong. They had to be. He couldn't have just lost two of the people who meant the most to him in one blow. There had been so much death since this stupid war had started. He'd lost other friends before, good friends. But this? This was too much. He couldn't even begin to cope.
Instead, he dodged the rest of the Resistance, not wanting anything even resembling sympathy. There was only one person he wanted to see. He knew there was a good chance that she wouldn't want to see him, but that didn't matter. Betty had said that Abigail had been killed by another Jedi. Laura might know who it was. Or it might have been her. He knew, though god he wished he didn't, that it was a possibility that Laura had been the one fighting with Abi. Just thinking about it made him feel empty. If she admitted it, he had no idea what he would do. He almost turned back, not wanting a confrontation if that was the way it was going to go. But he had to see her. He had to know for sure.
Nate may not have been a Jedi, but he wasn't totally without skills. He managed to track Laura to a rundown apartment. For a long time, he just stood at her door and stared. He hadn't been able to keep his thoughts in a straight line since he'd gotten the news. Every so often he would just zone out, completely lost. He needed to focus if he was going to talk to Laura, though. Snapping himself out of it, he knocked heavily, then stuffed his hands in his pockets and waited.
