I have had a great deal of time for thought lately, and my mind always ventures back to those times when I made my most difficult decisions, and when I gave my hardest counsel. Aikanáro's decision not to wed Andreth was, of course, his own. I would never have forbid the union, no matter how little I disagreed with it. I was his brother, not his father, nor hers. But despite the sadness it caused both of them, I do not think I would have counseled either of them differently. Their pain would have been intensely worse had a marriage between them been allowed.

It was a time of war, even if we had been in a Watchful peace for some time, and our kind does not marry in times of war. With Aikanáro being the warrior that he was, this was even more crucial.

Secondly, though I do not doubt their love, I truly believe that marriages between the Eldar and the human race must be only allowed for reasons of the Highest Doom. They are not something to be entered into lightly, or without great thought.

Thirdly, Aikanáro's pain would certainly have been worse when she ultimately died after so short a time had he allowed himself to love her from anything other than afar.

It was difficult counsel, but I do not regret it.

And what brought you to thoughts of your brother?

My sister's arrival has me thinking of family, and all the family I have lost.

We are fated to lose everyone year by year.

But I find your words interesting, in a way. I made.. such a different choice.

You did, indeed.

I am surprised at your decision. I am glad that it came out right for Itarillë, but it could have left her in despair.

There was no reason to believe he would not die. Tuor made Idril happy. Happier than I had seen her in many centuries.

I could not deny her that. I could not.

A few years of happiness is not worth a lifetime of misery. Not when lives are as long as ours are.

But it is worth it. She loved him and she would never love another. She knew, Felagund, what she would have to face and chose to face it bravely no less.

Aikanáro loved Andreth, as well.

But I did not want him to face that grief.

Neither did I. Well do we know what it feels to be ripped from our beloved ones. But... you are not a father, and you do not know the power of your child's happiness.

I don't wish grief on my daughter, but I had planned to be there the day Tuor passed beyond all reach.

You are both lucky that things ended as they did.

I do not think the Valar would have been so kind to Aikanáro.

I know it. And I am grateful forever for their mercy on my daughter and Tuor. No beings should be so sundered, but I feel deeply for your brother.

To love is such a beautiful thing! I cannot imagine what it must feel to be so marred.

Nor can I. I wonder why fate was so cruel to him; he did nothing to deserve it.

It was not my decision, but it was my counsel. And I think that my brother made the right decision.

Well, I meant in general. Not saying that it was your decision specifically.

So.. why can't an Eldar and a human marry in your world?

They can.

But it has only happened once, in my lifetime, although my cousin tells me that his daughter will marry a mortal as well.

It is not wise, and is certain to end in sadness.

Because we do not die, and they do.

Oh. Huh. Yeah, I can see how that may be a problem.

But humans all die and humans marry humans all the time. Death is just inevitable and its something they deal with when it comes. Well except for the ones who constantly try to resurrect their partners.

My lady, we of the Eldar love but once. To marry and love a mortal would mean short years of happiness, then untold centuries along and grieving. Yes, death comes, but such a thing is cruel.

Depends on who you ask. Death can definitely be cruel most of the time but at a point of their life, someone might welcome it.

But I'm mostly talking about humans in that sense. But do you not die at all? Like you have a way of healing if you get hurt or do you just live forever granted that nothing unfortunate ever happens to you?

Just for the record, I am absolutely not trying to offend you or anything. But if I do, accidentally, I'm sorry. I'm just really curious.

There is no offense, lady.

The lives of the Eldar are tied to the life of Arda - that is, the life of the world. We endure as long as it does. We can be slain, or die of grief, but when we are we are absent the world only a short time before we are re-embodied, and continue our lives as they were.

Giving such counsel can always be hard - it is not easy. After reading your comments between others here, I can understand your wariness and disapproval of such marriages. I can understand because I have watched people come and go for so long, it hurts to watch sometimes, even though in my case, my friends will return in time.

For Aikanáro, once Andreth died, she would never return. At least not until the Dagor Dagorach, and we know not what will happen then.

I do not die - in a normal sense anyways. If I am killed on Earth, I return to the Gates which I guard, and resume my watching from there. it is my job to watch.

Who the hell cares if it was "right"? If they loved each other, then they should get to do what they want.
