To Pet the Ponies
Characters: Fin, Jin
When: Monday, around 11 AM
Location: Jin's tank, to the barn

The morning had been ... interesting. He'd gone to the barn first to give the púca a heads up that he'd be bringing a visitor around in case Riley wasn't feeling particularly social. Along the way, he'd seen the shambling snowmen and thought being armed wasn't exactly a bad idea. On his way to Jin's tank, he swung by his place to pick up an ax. It wasn't necessarily much, but it was enough for something close range. He didn't really think arrows were going to do much, sadly.

Crunching through the snow in booted feet, Fin made his way through the carnival grounds. Deserted as they were, it was easy to see how the snow had been churned into paths, and the places that might have been unmolested save for adventurous children and their small boots. Granted, there weren't many of those, but he didn't expect there to be.

Humming to himself, Fin ducked into the tent that housed the mermaid and he made his way over to her tank. "Top o' the morning!" He called out with a cheer he couldn't really say he felt. Nothing to do with her, of course, but the place in general and the lingering winter weather, the missing people, the dead person, the new arrival. No, he definitely wasn't feeling particularly cheerful today. But it would be fun, at least, to show Jin around to the horses.

Jin was excited. She'd been looking forward to going to see the horses ever since Fin had promised he'd bring her there. Sure maybe she could go herself but it wasn't nearly as much fun doing that. Going wtih people, that was the fun. Plus these weren't like the animals of the water she was used to. This was land.

She was ready for Fin when he came though. She'd made sure to put boots on again today, and her hair was dry and braided into two very long tails on each side of her head. She'd heard about the snowmen, from the network, so she hadn't left the safety of the platform around her tank since she didn't think she'd do great against one. She wasn't good at stuff like that.

So she sat crosslegged on a beanbag chair on the bigger side of the platform around her tank, idly playing one of her video games while waiting for him. She sat up straight when she heard his voice, a grin coming across her face, and she quickly shut the TV and the game station off with remotes before pushing to her feet.

That first moment of standing was probably the worst, every time, but she bit her lip for a second and let out a breath and then she was all right, able to handle it. The closer to the full moon, the better it got, anyway. She gave him a bright grin and waved, quickly heading down to him. "Hi, Finn!" she greeted enthusiastically. "Thank you so much for coming to get me. I didn't want to see if the snowmen would come after me."

Fin smiled faintly but it wasn't as though it was an impossibility. Some of them were fairly Olaf-y, but more than a few of them ... well, weren't. Which was why he had an ax strapped over his shoulder. "Well, lass, I'll keep you safe from the walking snows," he informed her boldly. "The ones that haven't already fallen to the flames and hooves and paws and claws of the others, anyway," he continued. There had been plenty of piles of 'dead' snowmen after all, and yet there were still hoards of them moving around. He thought it was a sure sign they'd be moving on soon. Big things like this, the climax to whatever shenanigans there were, were usually markers of a pending move.

He'd be glad to be gone from here, honestly. Though it wouldn't actually change anything. The carnival would still be the carnival. The Beast would still be pulling the strings. People would be swept, people would be dragged in. People would die. No matter where they were, these things would happen. It was exhausting at times, but it was life.

Holding out his arm with his elbow crooked for her to take if she was inclined, he waggled his brows playfully before starting off with her toward the stables. He was careful to keep an eye on his pace because he didn't want to go faster than she was comfortable with. "So have you met any of the ones here yet?" He assumed not, but it was conversation to have on the way over.

Jin giggled and clasped her hands in front of her. His gallant attitude made her happy. She loved to play along to things like that. "Oh, I'm sure they've all had a go at them, but I saw one just a bit ago, wandering around." She hadn't ventured from the safety of her little home, though. "And I'm so clumsy, I'm just sure that I'd end up with stick marks all over or something." It was really cool yet also really creepy, reminiscent almost of a couple of the horror video games she played on occasion. Those weren't her favorites but they could be good fun sometimes. But she didn't want to be in the middle of her own horror game.

Because yes, she was honest, she'd die in the case of something like that.

She didn't know he was faking a lot for her benefit. When he offered his arm to her, she beamed happily up at him and nestled her small, partially webbed hand into the crook of his elbow, her other hand curving around the outside of his arm. She nestled close and grinned at him. She did her best to keep up and not slow down his long legs too much, though she wasn't going to be as fast as him normally.

"Nope," she said. "I've seen them from a distance but I've not gotten to meet any of the horses. Just the little animals at the petting zoo a couple of times."

Fin glanced down to her briefly before he cocked his head. "Maybe he was one of the funny ones, aye? They're not so bad." But it was just as possible it was one of the malicious ones. He didn't mind the ones more inclined to wave and pass on by, but they couldn't tell those at a glance from the others. Hopefully it would only be for the day; he liked to think they wouldn't have animated snow-things plaguing the guests. But then, why not? They'd had a fairly horrible first of the month, hadn't they? Not everything on April Fool's had been cheerful and pleasant. Easter, too, had been much the same. So why not wandering malicious snow-things among the guests?

While the corners of his eyes briefly tightened, it was the only outward expression of his thoughts, and easy enough to miss as he smoothed out his expression into one lighter, more cheerful.

"Well, it should be an adventure then. I'll even make up stories about them," he added with a wink. He really wasn't sure if Riley was going to be there or not, but he reasoned not; he thought the púca had mentioned something about maybe taking a walk. Fin assumed he meant in his fur and he'd be surprised later to learn it was otherwise.

It was a decent walk to the barn since it was all the way back at the rear of the residential area, though along the way Fin pointed out things of interest that maybe Jin wouldn't have had cause to notice or see before, like the practice area, the archery range, and Bob's cabin. Once they reached the barn, Fin did glance to Riley's stall (though the hand-painted name plate read "Fandango") and was unsurprised to find it empty. Possibly because the little mermaid might be able to sense that Riley was different from the other horses. Perhaps not, but neither of them had been particularly sure what sort of perception of others Jin had. While Fin was pretty sure Riley was just hiding himself on principle now more than anything else, he was still somewhat amused by the púca's absence.

He did also note another empty stall, but maybe someone had a horse out for something or another. It wasn't his business to mind; that would fall to the caretaker, when they finally got one officially. "Well, lass," he proclaimed with a sweeping gesture of his free hand. "Here we are. The grand carnival stables," he continued as if it really was some grand thing rather than a minimal wooden building with a dirt-and-straw floor. "Any of them in particular strike your fancy as the first one you'd care to meet?"

Jin thought for a moment she saw a tight, tense expression across his face, his eyes mostly, but it vanished and she was left doubting. So she simply smiled up at him, hoping if something was the matter she might be able to help. Besides, she probably imagined it. She listened raptly to his descriptions of things as they went. She'd seen some of the places but didn't know all the stories or descriptions. She hadn't explored much during the full moons.

She looked around very curiously once they arrived. It smelled of hay and what she imagined must be a horse smell. A bit of leather, too. Not a bad combination really. And she didn't know if it should look any different than it did, so to her, it was kind of grand. I was a largeish building, and everything seemed secure, at least.

She bit her lip carefully, looking around at the long curious faces that had stuck themselves over the stall doors, ears pricked. "Oh, ummmm." She almost bounced up and down, but it was more an appearance, a bending of her knees rather than a bounce that would hurt her poor little feets. "The spotted one?" she said hopefully, pointing to one of the horses with large spots on its sides.

Fin really was trying not to focus on the negative. He never had been a glass half empty sort, but more an appreciate what's in there sort. Lately though, it was hard when there was so much anger, sorrow, pain, and angst floating around. Not everyone, of course. Some were oblivious, some weren't invested, and some just didn't care because it was what it was. Fin fell somewhere in the middle of that mess; he cared for the sakes of those that were hurting, for those that were missing, for those that had to deal with it on a more personal level. But none of it was touching him directly. It wasn't his friends gone. It wasn't the púca gone. It was just an overall weight pressing down on the carnival and its inhabitants.

"The spotted one," he echoed as he escorted Jin to the stall. "Would you believe if I said her name was Spots?" He teased. Definitely teased since the nameplate clearly said 'Daisy', complete with a little painted picture of a flower at the end of her name. He knew most of the personalities of the horses, and their general opinions on things from Riley, because sometimes it was just the way the conversation turned.

"Did you bring anything for them?" He asked. He knew she'd mentioned apples, but if she didn't have anything there was a bin with treats in it she could pick from if she did want to feed them.

Jin giggled, a cheerful, light sound that went through the stables. "No," she said just as playfully, grinning up at him. "I do believe you're having me on. Her name is Daisy, it says so right there." She pointed to the little nameplate, so prettily set up.

She nodded. "I did. I brought some apples." She'd had that nice man Kennett pick her up some the other day. He never seemed to mind doing simple things like that. He'd even roasted one for her to taste. It had been very nice. She pulled a little bag off her back and opened it, revealing a bunch of apples. "Are these all right? There didn' seem to be anything online about what sort was best, so I just had Kennett pick whatever he thought was best." Her concern was endearing and genuine.

She offered him the bag, her eyes big and hopeful that the treats were going to be appropriate. "What do I do? I'm not sure if they're like what I'm used to or not." And ye gads, how long had it been since she was with a hippocampus? A very long time. These had similarites but they were not the same. But their big eyes and soft noses beckoned her, though she hung shyly back.

Fin looked for a moment baffled before shaking his head. "So it does," he replied in a speculative tone, as if he'd never noticed before. "All this time, I thought she was just Spots ..." He continued lightly before heaving an exaggerated sigh. Dropping her a wink, he turned his attention to her apples.

"It's a matter of taste, but I've yet to really see one turn down an apple," Fin replied. He was sure each of them had some preference or another, but in the end, somethign that wasn't hay or grain ... well, wasn't hay or grain.

"Let's see," he murmured as he took the bag. Drawing a simple pocket knife from his pocket, he drew the blade out to quarter the first of the apples. It wasn't as messy if they had smaller bites, and it was easier for them to get a grip on the pieces. Some, he knew, would try to bite it in half while it was still in palm, and that was just awkward and might be a little intimidating for some.

"So you'll want to hold your palm like this, cupped a little," he instructed, demonstrating. "Then lift it up where they can get to it easily." He handed her one of the apple quarters and nodded to Daisy even as he released his arm from Jin so she'd have freedom to feed and pet and whatever she cared to do.

Jin couldn't help it - she giggled again. She knew he was being silly, probably on purpose, but she couldn't deny that it amused her greatly and she enjoyed the effort. He was very amusing, and his accent made it even more lovely since he had a pretty voice.

She hadn't thought to bring a knife. She had a couple for grooming up her tank, for eating her fish, but she didn't carry one like a lot of people at the carnival did. She might occasionally be very territorial, but honestly her violent tendencies went into shouting at video games. She was pretty lowkey otherwise.

Jin took the apple piece, grinning broadly, and shyly approached the front of the stall where Daisy's head poked out. She mimicked how he'd held it, presenting it to the horse. A soft, eager set of lips brushed over her palm, making her laugh softly as the piece of apple very quickly got munched just like that. Her 'eeeee' was very soft so as not to startle the animals, but thrilled. "She's so soft!" She carefully reached out to pet the spotted face.

Fin chuckled softly. "Aye, they are," he agreed quietly before he glanced around to see what others might be up for attention. There was the big shire mix, the finer-boned Andalusian, and a few others that served various purposes in the acts. There was also one miniature pony that did tricks as well, and Fin could see that he was in his stall as well though it was difficult to spot him over the door. They'd likely have to go in if they wanted to say hi.

"If you wanted, we could see the big one and the tiny one," he suggested, though he was certainly not in a hurry to rush her away from Daisy. But if she wanted to walk stall to stall and feed them all, he'd be content enough to escort her through that, too.

While she petted and fed Daisy, Fin set about carving up the rest of the apples, dropping the pieces back into the bag so she could take them at her leisure.

Jin's eyes grew even bigger and rounder as she turned and saw the largest of all the horses. "Oooooh," she breathed with both fear and wonder. "Oh my, he's so big!" Her hands clasped at her breast as she regarded the large, gentle-eyed beast a couple of stalls over.

"He's nice, right?" she said, suddenly shy again, feeling very tiny compared to the large animals. Not truly frightened, but a little intimidated in a way she wasn't when she was in the water and in control of her surroundings.

She stuck her hand in her bag and took out a piece of apple, taking tiny, cautious steps toward the big animal. "What's his name?" she asked, carefully holding her hand out to the large animal.

"Aye, lass. They're all nice in here," he assured her as he followed along with her toward the big horse's stall. "His name's Goliath," he reported, leaning against the dividing beam between the two stalls. He lifted a hand to scritch at the gelding's neck as the creature took the apple bit from her with a delicacy one might not expect from a creature that large.

"Sadly, despite all my petitions, they wouldn't call the mini pony David. Guess they just don't appreciate Biblical humor around here," he continued with an amused smile and an exaggerated sigh. "So Buttercup he is, and Buttercup he remains, though I think he'd rather prefer the name David." Though frankly he knew from Riley none of the horses were particularly fussed about their names; they had their own names for each other when they spoke among themselves.

"We can go in with the pony, if you'd like. He can't quite reach over the divider."

She gently petted the large animal, being cautious but still fascinated aside from that. In the water, she probably wouldn't have been frightened at all.

"David and Goliath?" Jin blinked up at him. She knew it rang a bell but she really didn't recognize the reference right off. That wasn't completely unusual. Unless it was a big internet thing she didn't always recognize human references. She learned the strangest little things from some of her video games, and for some reason she was sure she had heard this referenced before but couldn't recall it.

"Well, he doesn't look like a Buttercup," she admitted, leaning over the door to look at him better. "Can we please? I want to give him some apples too."

He chuckled quietly. "Human stuff. Goliath was some giant and David was a human who slayed him with a stone from a slingshot," Fin explained. He was sure there was more to it, some actual deeper meaning to the story -- there usually was with the Bible stuff -- but that was the long and short of it. Tiny David defeats mighty Goliath in an unexpected manner.

Moving along with her, Fin opened up the door to the miniature pony's stall. He moved in first, though it wasn't as though there was some great threat of the pony bolting or doing Jin harm. Still, better safe than sorry.

Crouching down, he grasped the pony's halter and nodded for Jin to go ahead and feed him. While Fin really didn't imagine the pony would bolt, he was more likely to be a little excitable and accidentally bump her off balance or something. "Have you seen many of the acts in the big tent?" He asked. "Most of them perform there in one manner or another."

"Ooooh okay I think I rememer something about that," she said, nodding. "Are giants real?" She wasn't sure. She was a sea creature, not a land one, and didn't know much about things on the land. For all she knew they could be real, or they could be a fanciful human notion. No clue on her part about what was real and what wasn't.

She eased in after Fin, moving carefully. She squeed silently, lightly bouncing back and forth as she got a good look at the little pony. She was excited, she couldn't help it. The pony was so cute!! With his little grumpy face and fluffy mane and tail and everything. "Oh my he's just adorable!" she said, managing to keep her volume even but her excitement evident at the same time.

She leaned down and gave the little pony a couple of pieces of apple, petting his head as he munched. "I've seen a few of them. Not all of them yet, but I saw some the other day with the white and the gold horse," she said. "It was really interesting. I didn't know you could do things like that from their backs!"

"They are, aye," he replied. "I haven't seen one here yet, but we had them at home," he continued. He did wonder if the Beast would find his way to plucking up a giant from somewhere. Maybe. He'd plucked up a dragon so why not a giant? Except, of course, giants weren't quite as easy to hide as the rest of them. People were bound to notice a giant and how exactly did one explain that?

He nodded with a little smile. "They're quite versatile animals," he agreed. "Though for acts like that I suppose the credit is due at least a little to the acrobats and other performers," he conceded with a little amusement in his expression.

He'd seen most of the acts in their various incarnations over the years, and while some were more impressive than others, there was always something about watching the horses, even the little pony, that was spell-binding.

"Where are you from?" she asked with interest. Jin loved hearing about other people's lives before this place. They were so completely different and fantastical from everything she'd ever known, first in the ocean and then in her tanks, before she'd come to the carnival.

"The acrobats are awesome," Jin agreed. Micky was an acrobat and one of her very favorite people in the world, and she was always in awe of the kinds of things he could do with his body. They certainly weren't things she could ever do in a body with legs, though she wasn't certain of everything she could do. "But with the horses it's even cooler." Though the high wire stuff was really scary in her opinion.

Fin smiled a little, though he guessed he should've seen that one coming. "Ireland, but on the other side of the Veil," he replied. He assumed she was friendly enough with at least one of the fae to have heard about it even if not the details. Though frankly, the Veil had its own defenses in place and Fin was never quite sure what other people heard when he did chance to give details about life on the other side. Or, if like those warned about the carnival, they simply forgot whatever he'd said.

Not that it much mattered. He hadn't spoken about it in a while. Hadn't thought about it much lately, unless he was reminiscing with Riley and even then they didn't talk much about it. It was more ... thoughtful than spoken.

"They are that," Fin agreed before he rose to stand. His eyes drifted again over the interior of the barn before returning to Jin and the pony.

"Whenver you're ready, we can head out for lunch," he said. "No rush though," he added. "Take as long as y'like with them."

"Ahhhh. Okay," she said, understanding enough. She assumed the Veil was something like the protections her oceans had to keep the humans from noticing them the majority of the time. She wasn't fully informed on the details of those things. It hadn't been in her realm of experience or responsibility.

She rubbed her hand up and down the face of the pony one more time before standing straight again. "Just let me feed the rest of my apples?" she asked with a sweet, winning smile. She followed him from the stall and went along the line of stalls, rationing out the apple pieces that Fin had so helpfully cut for her, rubbing each nose gently as she did so.

"Thank you so much for showing me around, Fin. I really appreciate it," she told him with complete sincerity.

Nodding his agreemenet, Fin followed along with her, introducing her to each of the horses despite the fact they all had nameplates on their stalls until she ran out of apples.

"No trouble, lass," he assured her. "If you ever want to wander down here again, I don't mind playing tourguide. Maybe the new caretaker will show you around as well," he added, though that did bring to mind the circumstances of the former caretaker. He did try not to let it bring him down though; there wasn't anything they could do about it.

"In or out for lunch?" He prompted. If she didn't mind venturing out, he didn't mind taking her, but he didn't mind simply heading to the mess with her, either if she wasn't up for an adventure in the city today.

Jin beamed at him again. "I'll take you up on it. I hope the new caretaker will be as obliging as you," she said genuinely. Not that she wished someone forced against their will, but she did think the horses and Fin would all be happier if there were someone to help with the animals.

"Out, if you don't mind. I haven't seen much out, " she confessed almost shyly. She didn't think her tie to this place would protest at all. It hadn't when she was out with Ice after all. "My treat for showing me around?"

He smiled faintly, and simply hoped it wasn't some poor newbie that got saddled with the role. "Aye, here's hoping. Whoever it shall be," he replied as he put on a smile again. It wasn't up to him, either way. They'd endure, as they always had.

"Sounds fair to me," he agreed with a cheerful smile. He slid his hand into his pocket to check, but he did have his keys. "Any taste in particular? Sushi?" He guessed with an easy smile. He hadn't yet been to any of the places here, but he'd seen them while he'd been out doing other things. So it wouldn't be a problem to get her there if that was what she wanted.

"Whatever you want, really. I always love sushi, but there's a bunch of good things out there." Some that she'd never had, some that she had. Some epople were very generous with their time and brought her back food from the outside world, but sometimes it wasn't quite the same as having it served to you piping hot on a plate at the place itself.

"What do you like to eat?" she asked curiously as they headed out to his vehicle. "I don't know much about Irish food." Or what he might eat as being what he was, either. There was such variety even just here at the carnival and she didn't know everyone well enough to know what they might say was their personal favorites.

He laughed softly at the question. "I'll try anything once, twice if I like it," he replied cheekily before he shrugged as they strolled along toward the lot. If she had a preference, he was fine chauffeuring her anywhere; they may as well get out and play while they could.

"I don't really pigeonhole myself into a food type," he continued thoughtfully. But they'd had different things on the other side of the Veil, too, so there was always that to consider.

"Whatever your heart desires, lass, we shall have it," he declared.

She giggled softly. "I like to try a bit of everything too since I haven't always had the chance." And why limit herself? There were some things she really didn't like, but she wouldn't figure that out or what didn't agree with her slightly different physiology.

She looked up at him with her large dark eyes and smiled. "Can you surprise me?" she asked. "I'll try anything new you put in front of me today." And it'd be her treat, for taking her to the stables and then out to eat.

"Sounds like a brilliant philosophy," Fin declared. In this world, why not try what they could? It would be especially fun if they ventured somewhere foreign and got to try whole new cultures. It always did baffle him why the carnival spent so much time in the States, but that was neither here nor there.

"A surprise it is then," he said cheerfully as he ushered her along toward his car. It was an older model, but still in good shape that ran fine. He thought maybe they'd try that Chinese food place he'd passed a couple of times but had yet to stop into. After that, he supposed they'd wander back to the carnival, but he was certainly in no hurry to bolt through a meal. They could take their time and chat before wandering back into their cage.
