To Pet the Ponies
Characters: Fin, Jin
When: Monday, around 11 AM
Location: Jin's tank, to the barn

The morning had been ... interesting. He'd gone to the barn first to give the pĂșca a heads up that he'd be bringing a visitor around in case Riley wasn't feeling particularly social. Along the way, he'd seen the shambling snowmen and thought being armed wasn't exactly a bad idea. On his way to Jin's tank, he swung by his place to pick up an ax. It wasn't necessarily much, but it was enough for something close range. He didn't really think arrows were going to do much, sadly.

Crunching through the snow in booted feet, Fin made his way through the carnival grounds. Deserted as they were, it was easy to see how the snow had been churned into paths, and the places that might have been unmolested save for adventurous children and their small boots. Granted, there weren't many of those, but he didn't expect there to be.

Humming to himself, Fin ducked into the tent that housed the mermaid and he made his way over to her tank. "Top o' the morning!" He called out with a cheer he couldn't really say he felt. Nothing to do with her, of course, but the place in general and the lingering winter weather, the missing people, the dead person, the new arrival. No, he definitely wasn't feeling particularly cheerful today. But it would be fun, at least, to show Jin around to the horses.

"They are, aye," he replied. "I haven't seen one here yet, but we had them at home," he continued. He did wonder if the Beast would find his way to plucking up a giant from somewhere. Maybe. He'd plucked up a dragon so why not a giant? Except, of course, giants weren't quite as easy to hide as the rest of them. People were bound to notice a giant and how exactly did one explain that?

He nodded with a little smile. "They're quite versatile animals," he agreed. "Though for acts like that I suppose the credit is due at least a little to the acrobats and other performers," he conceded with a little amusement in his expression.

He'd seen most of the acts in their various incarnations over the years, and while some were more impressive than others, there was always something about watching the horses, even the little pony, that was spell-binding.

"Where are you from?" she asked with interest. Jin loved hearing about other people's lives before this place. They were so completely different and fantastical from everything she'd ever known, first in the ocean and then in her tanks, before she'd come to the carnival.

"The acrobats are awesome," Jin agreed. Micky was an acrobat and one of her very favorite people in the world, and she was always in awe of the kinds of things he could do with his body. They certainly weren't things she could ever do in a body with legs, though she wasn't certain of everything she could do. "But with the horses it's even cooler." Though the high wire stuff was really scary in her opinion.

Fin smiled a little, though he guessed he should've seen that one coming. "Ireland, but on the other side of the Veil," he replied. He assumed she was friendly enough with at least one of the fae to have heard about it even if not the details. Though frankly, the Veil had its own defenses in place and Fin was never quite sure what other people heard when he did chance to give details about life on the other side. Or, if like those warned about the carnival, they simply forgot whatever he'd said.

Not that it much mattered. He hadn't spoken about it in a while. Hadn't thought about it much lately, unless he was reminiscing with Riley and even then they didn't talk much about it. It was more ... thoughtful than spoken.

"They are that," Fin agreed before he rose to stand. His eyes drifted again over the interior of the barn before returning to Jin and the pony.

"Whenver you're ready, we can head out for lunch," he said. "No rush though," he added. "Take as long as y'like with them."

"Ahhhh. Okay," she said, understanding enough. She assumed the Veil was something like the protections her oceans had to keep the humans from noticing them the majority of the time. She wasn't fully informed on the details of those things. It hadn't been in her realm of experience or responsibility.

She rubbed her hand up and down the face of the pony one more time before standing straight again. "Just let me feed the rest of my apples?" she asked with a sweet, winning smile. She followed him from the stall and went along the line of stalls, rationing out the apple pieces that Fin had so helpfully cut for her, rubbing each nose gently as she did so.

"Thank you so much for showing me around, Fin. I really appreciate it," she told him with complete sincerity.

Nodding his agreemenet, Fin followed along with her, introducing her to each of the horses despite the fact they all had nameplates on their stalls until she ran out of apples.

"No trouble, lass," he assured her. "If you ever want to wander down here again, I don't mind playing tourguide. Maybe the new caretaker will show you around as well," he added, though that did bring to mind the circumstances of the former caretaker. He did try not to let it bring him down though; there wasn't anything they could do about it.

"In or out for lunch?" He prompted. If she didn't mind venturing out, he didn't mind taking her, but he didn't mind simply heading to the mess with her, either if she wasn't up for an adventure in the city today.

Jin beamed at him again. "I'll take you up on it. I hope the new caretaker will be as obliging as you," she said genuinely. Not that she wished someone forced against their will, but she did think the horses and Fin would all be happier if there were someone to help with the animals.

"Out, if you don't mind. I haven't seen much out, " she confessed almost shyly. She didn't think her tie to this place would protest at all. It hadn't when she was out with Ice after all. "My treat for showing me around?"

He smiled faintly, and simply hoped it wasn't some poor newbie that got saddled with the role. "Aye, here's hoping. Whoever it shall be," he replied as he put on a smile again. It wasn't up to him, either way. They'd endure, as they always had.

"Sounds fair to me," he agreed with a cheerful smile. He slid his hand into his pocket to check, but he did have his keys. "Any taste in particular? Sushi?" He guessed with an easy smile. He hadn't yet been to any of the places here, but he'd seen them while he'd been out doing other things. So it wouldn't be a problem to get her there if that was what she wanted.

"Whatever you want, really. I always love sushi, but there's a bunch of good things out there." Some that she'd never had, some that she had. Some epople were very generous with their time and brought her back food from the outside world, but sometimes it wasn't quite the same as having it served to you piping hot on a plate at the place itself.

"What do you like to eat?" she asked curiously as they headed out to his vehicle. "I don't know much about Irish food." Or what he might eat as being what he was, either. There was such variety even just here at the carnival and she didn't know everyone well enough to know what they might say was their personal favorites.

He laughed softly at the question. "I'll try anything once, twice if I like it," he replied cheekily before he shrugged as they strolled along toward the lot. If she had a preference, he was fine chauffeuring her anywhere; they may as well get out and play while they could.

"I don't really pigeonhole myself into a food type," he continued thoughtfully. But they'd had different things on the other side of the Veil, too, so there was always that to consider.

"Whatever your heart desires, lass, we shall have it," he declared.

She giggled softly. "I like to try a bit of everything too since I haven't always had the chance." And why limit herself? There were some things she really didn't like, but she wouldn't figure that out or what didn't agree with her slightly different physiology.

She looked up at him with her large dark eyes and smiled. "Can you surprise me?" she asked. "I'll try anything new you put in front of me today." And it'd be her treat, for taking her to the stables and then out to eat.

"Sounds like a brilliant philosophy," Fin declared. In this world, why not try what they could? It would be especially fun if they ventured somewhere foreign and got to try whole new cultures. It always did baffle him why the carnival spent so much time in the States, but that was neither here nor there.

"A surprise it is then," he said cheerfully as he ushered her along toward his car. It was an older model, but still in good shape that ran fine. He thought maybe they'd try that Chinese food place he'd passed a couple of times but had yet to stop into. After that, he supposed they'd wander back to the carnival, but he was certainly in no hurry to bolt through a meal. They could take their time and chat before wandering back into their cage.

She'd spent a fair amount of time, pre-carnival, in several different countries in Asia more than anything. She'd washed up there, of course, and been found there. All up and down that coast, and a few inland trips to deeper parts of China and a few other places. She'd spoken little enough English when she joined the carnival though you wouldn't know it now. She was fluent from the patience of a few people in those first few months, but she'd caught on very fast out of sheer desire to communicate.

Jin followed him to the car and tucked herself neatly into the passenger seat, taking care to do up the buckle, though her webbed fingers curled around the belt cautiously. She'd taken a car a couple of more times since Ice had brought her out, but she still hadn't quite lost her fear and caution. But she put on a good brave face for Fin, smiling at him as he got settled. "On to the surprise!" She declared.
