Week Six - Wednesday Afternoon
Characters: Andrew Kirke, Molly Williams, then Alice Munroe and Jed Bailey.
Setting: Nevada State Museum.
Summary: Drew and Molly make their visit to the Museum, where they meet Alice and Jed. Molly is enthused. Drew is a bit more skeptical. Drew asks about his missing girlfriend and when he finds she's not there, he decides to head back, but not before he and Jed share a few opinions.
Rating: PG-13 for adult themes.
The morning was proving to be much cooler than he expected, thanks to the cloud cover. It seemed like as good a morning as any to finally venture out to the Nevada State museum. Molly hadn't shut up about it all week, bringing it up every time they ate together or she stopped by. He humored her, understanding her enthusiasm to spend time with another kid her age, along with the talk of food and community, but it still made him nervous. He'd even risked a bit of his precious gas to drive out there and back, in order to make sure the driving path was clear. The front door was chained up with a newer chain and a heavy-duty lock, but the interior was empty, which gave him an inkling of hope. Something like that had planning behind it; a gang would be living in the museum. Someone obviously cared for the place and wanted to protect it. He could understand something like that.
Drew spent the morning pre-recording messages to go on between the song loops. Messages to Ana, messages for the people who might be listening to have hope. Even a short message to explain where he was going, just so anyone who was listening would know that the message was a loop, just in case he didn't come back.
After packing food and water for the trip, Drew moved into the lobby and settled in one of the chairs, waiting for Molly to arrive.
Molly had been restless. She was excited and nervous and a mix of emotions that she hadn't felt since setting out on her journey. A couple of time since meeting Searle, she considered making the journey on her own, but had ultimately decided to wait for Drew just in case something bad happened. Eventually, they decided to go and she couldn't wait. She woke up early from excitement, packed her bag with a few things that she may need on the trip and realized she still had quite a few hours left until the trip. So she did what she used to do when she had an excess of time to kill, she drew.
Molly had long since found markers and pens and paper in the house, but her supply of paper was growing short. Sitting on one of the beds, Molly began using the markers on her jeans doodling hearts and peace signs and multicolored flowers out of boredom. She was lost in art, but suddenly realizing she was supposed to be meeting Drew she hopped off her bed and grabbed her duffel. Her hand hesitated over the gun, but she grabbed it and slid it into her waistband. She still wasn't any better at using it, but no one but her and Drew knew that and she thought it made her look tougher.
She made it to the lobby a few minutes later, bursting through the door a little out of breath (she had run most of the way to the lobby). Molly flashed Drew a grin, her fingertips covered in multicolored ink as she waved at him.
"Hey you!" She greeted happily.
"Hey back," Drew replied, grinning. "Y'wanna take a sec to catch your breath?" It was a last-ditch attempt to slow them down and possibly stop them altogether, but he knew by the excitement written all over Molly's face that it was in vain.
Molly shook her head at him. She was a little out of breath, but she'd figure that she'd recover quick enough. "Nope! I'm good to go. I promise. You ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be," he answered, sliding off his chair and sweeping his hands down the front of his shorts. "I'll drive."
The weather was nice enough at that point to walk, but he was hesitant to. If they needed to get away from the place fast, he didn't want to not have a car available to them. Granted, a well-aimed shot could easily disable the car, but not if they were careful. Drew lead them back to where he'd parked, unlocking her side first before he moved around to his.
Molly nodded and followed him out to his car. It had been a while since she rode shotgun to anyone, and she didn't even know that Drew had a car though it made sense for him to have one. She slipped into the seat and set the bag at her feet looking over at Drew. She couldn't help but notice he wasn't utterly excited about this.
"It'll be okay." She said confidently, though she wasn't entirely sure of that herself.
"Knock on wood," he replied, albeit with a chipper tone. It seemed unfair to drag her down. The moment the car started the music from the radio station piped in through the speakers, overly loud for a moment before he adjusted the volume.
"I put Bon Jovi into the first hour," he told her, smiling a little wider. "And Boys Like Girls. Though anyone listening is going to be asking what the hell I was smoking when I set up that tracklist."
Molly couldn't help but laugh, the two were a weird mix though she enjoyed both bands for different reasons. She shrugged at him. "Well, Best case, they think you have an annoying little girl bullying you into weird pop music trends... or worst case, they think you are suffering from some delusions brought on by heat and lack of water. But, thanks. I appreciate it."
"'Course," Drew replied cheerfully, turning them out on the road.
