Who: Mitchell and Maryanne
Where: Roof top of apartment building No. 1
What: Talking
When: Saturday morning
Rating: Middle?
Open: If you’ve got a reason… :-)
Status: Unfinished
The weather wasn’t as dark as it had been the last two days. Maybe because of that Mitchell’s mood was lighter. He was convinced that it was just a matter of days till Annie would show up. Maybe a week. And even if she wouldn’t, he could wait. He would wait. He wasn’t sure if his sanity was stable enough to make it through that time.

Mitchell wrapped his jacket around him as the wind picked once again up. George was miserable as well. But right now, Mitchell wasn’t able to see past his own misery. They had no control over anything. It was the train all over again. Not as crowded, not as weird but essentially the same. With dinosaurs. And books. Loads of books. Who could ever read so many books? He had started to read one of them. Boring story called "Claudia Herness". Most of the time it was about shopping, cooking and cleaning the house.

Maryanne wasn't sure why she followed his scent up the stairs. Wasn't sure why she stood at the door to the roof. Wasn't exactly sure why she was there. But she did know she needed her friend, and... Even if he wasn't in the mood to see her, it was happening anyway.

She pushed the door open to the roof, it was loud, it squeaked and slammed when it closed on its own. Making her jump slightly. So much for a covert operation. A slight sigh passed through her lips. "Hey."

Mitchell's eyebrows rose in surprise as he turned around and saw Maryanne. "Hey," he replied softly. He couldn't spot any annoyance which surprised him even more and let the sun brighten a bit. He sighed inwardly, Samir had to be right. Fuck!

"There's a guy here who looks just like me. Jesus, that's weird," he said after a short pause. It was a peace offering. A test how she would react to a normal conversation.

"Yeah, I noticed. It should be a law against the universe for two of you to exist in one." She teased. A comment on how pretty he was wasn't needed was it? And for there to be two? "I'm surprised this one hasn't collapsed in on itself."

She moved to stand underneath the canopy. Leaning against the wall behind it. It was easy just to slip into things as if there hadn't been any friction at all.

"I think we're related," he blurted out. God, he needed a cigarette. His fingers began to search for one in his pockets. "He's from the future, you know. Psychic vampire, he says. Fucking ironic." He had found one and lit it with fidgety fingers.

"What? I don't think you are." Her eyebrows shot up at that admission. She hadn't known that part. "He's a shapeshifter too." She pointed out. Plotting to go hunting with him had been fun.

"I know he is," Mitchell replied. "He told me." He paused shortly. He wasn't sure if he wanted to continue and so stalled the conversation by taking another pull. "His family comes from France. His grandmother told a lot of stories. He wasn't sure if they were right. But part of his family comes from Arras." Another pause. Another pull. "Been, there, you know. During the war. I think I knew one of his ancestors, think I slept with her." He frowned. This was all too strange. Maybe the other man wasn't even from his reality. Still if Hitler existed in many, why shouldn't Mitchell himself?

Maryanne wasn't sure what to say. Her jaw dropped. "That wasn't to far before you were turned, was it?" In a way it was amazing. He had a kid, even if he hadn't known about it, his line didn't end. Oh god. She could feel the overreaction already. And there was no stopping it. Her eyes began to water, even as her hands came up to fan her face.

"Mitchell... That means ... It didn't stop with you. I mean... Your family line." GAH what was going on! Even closing her eyes didn't stop the tears from trailing down her cheeks. "No wonder I liked him right off." She sniffed softly.

"Shit, Maryanne. Are you all right?" His eyes widened. Okay, he was confused. He didn't know how to feel about it but this, well, this was... err, NOT how he felt. "And no, it wasn't. A year maybe. Fuck, I don't know. I don't even know if he's from my reality."

"No," She growled at herself. "I mean yes. I'm okay... I'm just, a freak of nature." She dashed the heals of her palms against her cheeks. Forcing the tracks away, only for them to reappear when the next set streaked down.

"He looks just like you." She rose her eyebrows as if that sucked away any doubt. She had to wonder if Samir had a trace sent that was close to Mitchell's. Though that would be far to unlikely.

"Jesus, Maryanne. I know he does. It's scary just how much he does. I mean five hundred freaking years and he looks like me." He glanced at Maryanne with worry written all across his face. Was something wrong with Daryl? Had anyone vanished? "Are you sure there's nothing wrong? You don't exactly behave yourself."

"It's not that scary. I'm sure he smells different, considering. So there's that." And she already knew their mannerisms were different. If she felt like herself likely she'd rib him a little. But only a little.

Taking a deep breath she mentally grabbed hold of her emotions and forced them back. The heals of her hands wiping away the trails again. This time successfully. "I've noticed I've been overreacting a lot lately. I mean I just think the name Cato and I've got crocodile tears." She did miss the hulking blonde something fierce. She dashed her fingers through her hair.

"There's a possibility that I'm pregnant. A small one, but it's there. And I've been thinking about it since the other day..." She paused for a moment. "I met one of the newbies. A guy, who's a bit of a prick, named Kon-El. In one of the thrift stores, I was trying on a dress that should have fit perfect, and it was too small. His first question was, 'What, are you pregnant or something?' or right about close to that." She cast a glance at him, waiting for his reaction.

“Great! That makes it totally normal then,” Mitchell said, sarcasm wrapping around his words. It was freaky and it would stay that way. No matter what. Was he responsible for him? He was a complete stranger but still… ugh! And his looks didn’t help any matters.

Mitchell’s eyebrows rose again. Pregnant? Maryanne? Somehow that didn’t quite fit. He just couldn’t imagine her as a mother. “Have you done a test yet?” Why ponder if you could have proof?

She rose her eyebrows at his complaint. "Mitchell, we've just come from a train that kidnapped people, all races colors and sizes, from different' universes. And finding someone that looks like you is strange?" His sarcasm was working on lightening her mood.

Maryanne shook her head a little. "Not yet. But my metabolism usually keeps me from gaining weight. And I've been exceptionally busty lately." And she couldn't help but notice the additional curve to her stomach. "And the theory is that... Well lets just say I could be a mom of more than one before my twenty-sixth birthday."

Hell, yes! He had gotten used to the train and whatever it was doing. What he had not gotten used to was looking at someone just like him. And it wasn't just that. It was what it implied as well. A part of him had always regretted never being able to go down the family road. But he had gotten used to it. It was the littlest of all the problems his condition brought. But the possibility that he had actually had a kid jumping around out there, that was by now buried somewhere, that was just scary. "Jesus, Maryanne. What if he's really... you know?"

Mitchell glanced to her stomach. Hmm, yeah, could be that she had gained weight. But he wasn't an expert on the matter. "Oh? I'm sure Annie will be happy helping you." He didn't even leave any room for doubt that she might not be around by then. "How many?"

"Is it such a bad thing that he is, Mitchell?" It meant that he would have missed out on his child's life. "I know it says you might have had a kid somewhere, that you never got to see, that you never got to hold... But it also mean..." She wasn't sure how to voice what it meant. She knew having a kid meant a lot to her. She wanted to be little Miss Domestic.

Maryanne didn't miss the look. If anyone would have noticed it would be Mitchell, and possibly Daryl. After all how often did he see her, and she wasn't fully clothed. She was probably more clothed now than she had ever been, around him. Denim jeans hugging her hips, and simple purple tee that brought out the periwinkle blue of her eyes. "Bruce did an ultrasound when I broke my nose, and said I have room for ten." It was hard as hell to deliver that news deadpan. But she managed.

"Might be," Mitchell immediately corrected. 'Might' was such a nice word. It meant you had options. It meant that for some time till you actually decided or found out what was real you could pick the one you favoured. "What?" He wasn't sure what was so great about having your dead child's corpse rotting away somewhere.

Note to self: never go to Bruce Banner if you had medical issues. "What? Where? In your legs?" With ten kids stored in her belly she would simply fall over. That was actually quite amusing.

"Well, I keep coming back to the only touch of immortality any true being can have is... Having kids. And those kids having kids. And those kids having kids. Because even people who are supposed to be immortal can still manage to be killed." How many mutants had supposedly had immortality down and died? She couldn't count.

Maryanne chuckled a little. "No, my 'oven' is shaped like a cats, but human size. And I generally... Do you really wanna hear the mechanics of it all?" She arched a brow at him. Not many men wanted to know how lady business worked, the knowledge that it did was generally enough. "Question is, how do I tell Daryl. And what do I... I mean should I go see Bruce first? Or get a pee test and hope it works, or... Should I cook a nice breakfast and sit him down and... Say hey, you might be a pop. Wanna go with me to see my friend and blah blah blah." She sighed softly.

"No, it's not the only one. You can't stay in one place because someone is bound to notice that you are different. But the worst is seeing people die. I know I can die. But still, the chances are good that I will survive everyone here." George, Nina, Maryanne. He would see everyone die. Even Eve. It made having Annie around even more important. She would stay. They would always have each other.

"But how do ten kids fit into your oven? You would explode." No, he wasn't going to let that topic go. It was just too freaking impossible for him. He imagined her with ten babies in her belly and she looked like a balloon. His eyes jumped from side to side as the images got more ridiculous and a frown had found its way onto his forehead. No way in hell would ten kids fit into a woman's womb. "Eh... go to Bruce first. No reason to overrun Daryl if you don't know for sure."

"Maybe, I mean I can understand. I've seen people I loved die. But the people you meet, through out your life, will be glad that you were there. They wont be thinking of how sad it will not to be with you anymore. Just how glad they were to have known you." Of course she might have been speaking for herself. But she was fairly sure that George's feelings were close to the same vein.

"The way it's shaped. I would waddle a whole hell of a lot. If I could walk at all, I might even resort to spending most of the time furry simply because they're built to carry more than one kid. But it's only for ninety-one days. Or so the theory goes." She shrugged lightly. Part of her hoped she was wrong. Part of her hoped she was only getting fat. But common sense told her she wasn't. "I've been tempted to ask Daryl if he thinks I'm getting a little fluffy. Just to see how he'd react." Maryanne grinned almost devilishly.

Mitchell nodded. He didn't quite understand how that made seeing them die any easier. Maybe it was just something good, something human he could do. Be there for others, help. It made him feel better, not good, but better.

A frown was directed at Maryanne. They couldn't be seriously having this conversation. "Ten human kids in a mountain lion, seriously? Don't let Green Peace get you." They would probably declare it a new furry human race or something. Use it as proof that humanity and animals were deeply connected. Her last comment made him laugh. "You are one of those women, huh? The kind that believes that making men uncomfortable is a sport."

"If... you weren't vampire, you and I would have never met." She pointed out. How likely would he have come out of the war if he wasn't one? Sure the train could have pulled him from it, it had pulled people from earlier times. But he wouldn't have met George, or Nina, or Annie.

"It's the only way I could think of and be able to walk around. Or you'd have to come see my belly and me otherwise. Cause I wouldn't be able to leave the bed. I mean jeez did you see the octomom? Or John and Kate plus eight." Maryanne did a full body shudder. Two would be a little much. His comment made her snicker though. "No I'm not. You maybe, but not other men." The horror of multichildren gone for the moment.

"I know," Mitchell mumbled, trying to throw her a thankful smile. It failed and instead he started playing with his gloves, back hunched over slightly. He knitted the material, tugged at the corners of it. If he weren't a vampire, so many other people would still be alive. He would be dead by now, yes. But life he would have had would have been worth it.

He paused and glanced at her. "No, never saw them," he replied sceptically and his tone clearly said that he was glad he hadn't. "Aww, Maryanne. You know how to make me feel special." His eyes sparkled with mirth. Jesus, was he grateful for a few doses of harmless banter.

Maryanne knew what he was going through, and rather rehash everything he already knew. She simply slapped his hands apart, lightly, once his hands parted she stepped between them. Wrapping her arms around his neck. Simply because he was her friend. And she didn't doubt he needed one. She needed one. And she didn't expect him to judge her no matter how fluffy she'd got.

"You are special." She was sincere, and while it wasn't quite another moodswing it was nearly so. Cause she went from teasing him, to simply resting her chin on his chest. "I'm kinda scared Mitchell. And not much scares me."

It felt good. The hug. Feeling someone else so close. He had needed it more when he was ready to admit. Comfort, just saying I'm here. It was a blessing.

Mitchell slung his arms around her, pressing her to his chest. It seemed that she had needed it just as much as he had. "Yeah, me too." He was scared. Not about babies. That was no option he had for his future. But everything seemed uncertain here. They got tossed from one place to the other and now... now Annie was gone. She wasn't here. And there was this tiny little doubt that nagged and nagged, telling him that she might never be here. What if he lost himself? He already felt like going crazy.

Maryanne knew without having to ask what worried him. Or some of it anyway. "You know that promise I made you on the train, still stands right?" One hand stroked his shoulder, while the other thread in his hair. She was trying to comfort him as he comforted her. Lending what strength she had, the only way she knew how.

She sighed softly. She wished she could tell him that Annie would come. That he'd wake up tomorrow and she'd be there at his side. But she couldn't promise that. And she didn't want to make an empty promise when there was no way to know for sure.

Mitchell nodded, then cleared his throat as he noticed that Maryanne would not see him nod. "Yeah..." He swallowed. There was a lump in his stomach as his thoughts raced around nothing. "I wouldn't want to hurt you... but... I might need you to stop me." He had asked Lily the same after Annie had told him about his fate but their friendship here, he doubted that telling her to keep him from murdering people would help in any way to reestablish it.

She didn't see it, but she felt him nod. Leaning back she met his eyes with her own. "Don't you worry about hurting me. I'm not indestructible but I'm tougher than I look. I'll stop you. I promise." It felt good to just bury her anger with him. To pick up as if nothing was any different. What was a little anger between friends?

He nodded. "Thanks," he mumbled. It was selfish. A part of him knew that. He let Maryanne carry his problems. But he couldn't do it on his own. He smiled. "I know you are." The problem was, so was he and he already looked a lot stronger to begin with. But the promise felt to good to argue and so he stayed quiet and let himself be calmed by the comfort of her hug. He could feel her heart beat against his chest and swallowed down the hunger. Why couldn't it leave him alone for a minute or two?

"You know what's better than hugs for the wounded soul?" He couldn't see it but she had the cheekiest grin. Part of the reason she felt like there was a possibility that she was gaining weight instead of maybe pregnancy? Because she'd given into the want for comfort food more often than she should have. Her appetite was ravenous. "Pancakes." She was, of course, offering. Willing to cook for him. Having a kitchen of her own was definitely a plus.

Mitchell released her chuckling. "Now this is an offer I can hardly decline," he smiled back at her. He glanced at the sky. It looked better. Not as dark as it had been a few minutes ago.

"Thanks," he said, smiling softly. He meant more than just the pancakes. Their friendship was precious. Easy and deep at the same time. It wasn't something that you found every day.

She snagged his hand and brought it to her lips. It was a strange, affectionate, but not more than was uniquely her. And she did love Mitchell, not the way she did Daryl, but in a way that he was irreplaceable. "What are you thanking me for? I only do what comes easy." Not staying mad, she felt her blood pressure drop, in his presence.

She lead him through, down the stairs. To the apartment she and Daryl shared. She was sure everyone else's was nearly identical. Though she'd snagged a few pieces here and there from a thrift shop or two. "Now these are made from... well the eggs aren't chicken's but the taste isn't too wild."
