Mac was in the hospital, sitting up on one of the beds. He had his shirt off and there was a rather large bandage over one shoulder as well as cuts and bruises on his face. She'd asked around for twenty minutes before someone told her where he was and she knocked on the door. "There you are. You are Mac, right? Not one of the identicals?" Mac nodded. "Yeah, it's me sugarcube. You're not worried about me, are you?" He tried to smile but it was a dim one. She lingered in the doorway, looking at his chest. "I was just wondering. I can go." He shook his head and held his left hand out to her, the bandage on his right shoulder. "Don't go." She chewed on her lip, "Where's your sister?" she asked, looking between him and the other side of the doorway. "Probably making sure Tony's okay." He shrugged his one good shoulder. "She should be here." Gretel looked down and stepped into his room. "Looking after you." He ran his fingers through his hair. "She'll be along shortly. I don't mind, really." He smiled. "Okay." she nodded, "I'll wait with you until she gets here." Gretel pulled off her leather vest, sitting down in the empty chair next to his bed. He shifted over a little and patted the bed next to him. "Come here." She looked at the spot for a little while before getting up and sitting in the empty space. "Looks like you got out of there pretty much unharmed." He smiled. She nodded, "I got lucky. I was out of practice." she eyed his wound, "You weren't so lucky, huh?" "Ain't really been in that kind of fight before." He shook his head. "It's not too bad. Just need a few stitches. Probably end up with a scar." "You'll heal." she nodded softly again. "I think." "I'll be just fine." He nodded. "Your brother okay?" Gretel nodded again, "He's alright. I lost sight of him but I found him and he went off to the kids." He nodded, shifting a little closer. "That's good." He smiled. "Is your sister safe?" Gretel asked. He nodded. "Yeah. She didn't get in on the fighting. Just stayed in the tower and helped out." "That's good." Gretel murmured. After a second, she laid her head down very gently on his shoulder. "I'm glad you're okay." "Thanks." He smiled. "I'm glad you're okay too." "Me too." she cleared her throat, not quite knowing what to do or say. They were basically about sex and yet she was here, watching over his sickbed? "Does it hurt?" "Yeah. Said I needed a few stitches." He cleared his throat. "Not sure how many." "Didn't they give you something for the pain?" she frowned deeply. He shook his head. "They tried but I told them to save it. There're people that need it worse than I do." "So you're just gonna be all noble and shit?" she shook her head, digging into her pocket for her hip flask. "Might as well get trashed." "What's wrong with being all noble and shit?" He smiled. "It's a self-indulgent lie." she swigged from her hip flask and offered him some, "It just makes you feel superior." He took the flask and took a swig. "Makes me feel better. Knowing that I might have helped somebody else." "So not one single strand of you liked fighting?" she arched her eyebrow at him. "Now I didn't say that." He chuckled. "It was....fun. Got a lot of aggression out that I didn't even know I had." "Then I'm glad you're not all perfect." she snatched back her flask and sipped with a smile. "I'm far from perfect, sugarcube." He chuckled. "Name one way." she scowled. Mac thought for a little while. "Well, I ain't exactly had the cleanest of thoughts about half the women on this island. That's gotta mean something, right?" "You kidding me? That's normal." she laughed, "I'm looking for an actual character flaw, assmunch." "Oh." He looked down, chewing on his lip. "I yelled at my sister for no reason one time. Just 'cause." He made a face. It still bothered him that he'd done that. "Yeah but you're sorry for it. Doesn't count." she shook her head, "I give Hansel shit all the time and I'm never apologizing for it." "But that's how you grew up." He shrugged, wincing a little. "I always took care of AJ. After ma and pa died, it was just us and Granny and I had to look after my sisters." "I would kill and die for my brother." she murmured, offering him the alcohol. "But looking after him would mean that if I died, he wouldn't be able to live on his own. You can't always take care of her. She won't be able to live without you." He took the flask and took another drink. "AJ can do just fine without me. Especially now she's got Tony. But she's always been able to take care of herself." "It bother you that she doesn't need you as much anymore, then?" she asks "She ain't needed me since she was a little thing. And I guess it bothers me a bit." He nodded. "Things just have to change, I guess." she muttered, "But she should still be here." "She'll come when she know that Tony's okay." He nodded and smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. He took another drink from the flash before holding it out to her. "Well, I can wait with you until she gets here." Gretel ran her fingers through her hair. "Thanks, I appreciate it." He smiled. "Don't mention it." she smiled back "I should be feeling better in a few days." He smirked. "At least enough to have a little fun." "You just take your time, Blondie. I'm not exactly gentle." she chuckled. He grinned. "I know you ain't." He kissed her cheek. She blushed softly. "Yeah, well... I like scars so don't heal completely." "You wanna see it? I'm sure there'll be a nice scar when I'm done healing." He chuckled. "I want to see the end scar, not the weeping wound you got now." she shuddered. He chuckled. "Alright. We'll give it a week or so then." He nodded. "Good." she put her hand on his thigh, rubbing light circles. "Were you really worried about me?" He was purely curious, not meaning to make fun of her in any way. "I came to find you, didn't I?" He nodded. "That you did." He smiled. "I was a little worried about you too. Just a little though. I watched you fighting. You're real good." She shook her head, "No, I'm out of practice." "If that's out of practice, I don't want to see you when you've been practicing." He chuckled. "I was better." she chuckled. "You're a really good fighter." He nodded. "Thanks." she blushed. "I wish I could have seen you fight." "It wasn't anything pretty." He chuckled. "Got off a couple of shots and then got knocked over." "That it, huh?" she smirked. "Lame." "I know." He nodded. "It was pretty lame. I'm real glad you didn't see it." "You'll need to train with me and Hansel." she smirked again. "Or maybe just you." He smiled. "I am the superior fighter." she nodded proudly. "I bet he'd say different." He laughed. "Probably but he'd be wrong." she laughed too. "Once I'm all better you'll have to give me a real lesson on how to use those guns." He nodded. "I got kind of a crash course, but that's it. I wanna be good at it. Just in case this happens again." Which was very likely with this place. "I can train with you. You do good, you can fuck me however you like." she chuckled again, rubbing her eyes. He smiled and kissed her neck softly. "I really like that idea." He chuckled. "You know, I can lie down and we can have a little nap if you're tired. There's plenty of room on the bed." "Now you mention it, I am tired." she yawned a little. He shifted so that he could lay on the bed on his left side. He smiled. "Come on." "You sure you're comfortable like that?" she asked, twisting so she was lying on her side too He nodded. "Yup. I'm real comfortable." He smiled. He trailed his fingers from her shoulder down her arm to take her hand. "Thanks for checking on me." "My pleasure. Feels nice, actually." He smiled and kissed her forehead. "Let's get some sleep." He shifted a little to get more comfortable. "I'm just glad you don't snore, Blondie." she teased, closing her eyes "You do." He smirked a little. "I so do not!” She thumped his arm tightly. He winced a little and laughed. "I'm just playing with you." He grinned, then yawned. "Let's just sleep. I'm sure your sister will be here soon." she pulled his arm around her body He moved a little closer to her and smiled, letting her wrap his arm around her. "Alright. Sleep well, Gretel." He smiled before closing his eyes. Gretel awoke a couple of hours later and pulled her phone from her bag, texting Hansel. "Sorry. Fell asleep. Now on my way back. Where are you?" "I'm at the apartment with the kids. Everything okay?" Hansel texted back. |
