CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 40, Elfwreck!
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (lj and/or Penname): elfwreck. I'm Elfwreck pretty much everywhere I am online. I also answer to Erica. Or Elf. I don't differentiate between my online identity and my face-to-face one. Elf is my initials (elf are my initials?), so I have files on my computer called "elfmisc" and "elfwip" and "elfrants" and so on.
Your Team: Team Wartime.
1. What made you decide to join the 2007 Snarry Games?
I missed out on the 2006 round, and wrote drabbles instead. Either that or being bumped in the first place won me a spot here; I wasn't concerned much with which.
What made me decide to do that one is a bit blurry in my mind. My f'list likes my writing (in general), and I think I wanna grow up to be one of the Cool Kids. (We will, for the sake of this post, believe that the "cool kids" are those who are famous for writing porn involving children's story characters, 'cos that's what "cool" means, right?) Oh, and I read fanficrants for a while (it got too hard to keep up), and kept saying, "I can do better than that. A lot better. If that's what passes for fanfic, I really should get off my ass & get these plotbunnies out of my head; I'd get Nifty Acclaim, and I'd be improving the average quality of writing available on the web."
2. Which Harry Potter character is your favourite to write? To read? (any POV)
Probably Snape all around; I love a good ambiguous character. Especially a definitely-tainted ambiguous character. I especially adore a good first-person Snape story; I like the different ways people show his brain twisting. I enjoy the whole range from "mastermind Snape who is always in control" to "incoherent insecure ranting Snape who can't have an emotion without sputtering at the six closest people."
3.What brought Snarry to your attention? Was it a specific event/fic/picture?
Heh. This one's fun. Several years back, on one of my pagan email lists, someone ("puppygirl") posted the first chapter of a Snarry story: Symphony of Darkness, by Kadira. Darkfic. Somewhat AU. Dubcon, BDSM, slavery.
I'd like to say "I loved it instantly," but I didn't. It was okay, but not really to my tastes; I didn't care for Evil!Snape or Slave!Harry... but the list exploded with "how dare you turn Harry Potter into a sex slave! This is KIDDIE PORN, you EEBIL PERVERT!!!" So with that, I had to read the rest of it, and decided that it was good writing--it was *hot* writing--and I argued vehemently against the "kiddie porn" label; Harry in the fic is over 18, and besides, Harry Potter isn't real, and you can't have "child pornography" without a child. The *idea* of a child is not kiddie porn.
Thus begins my love affair with Snarry. I'm sure I would've eventually found it; I was a long-time K/S fan so not new to slash at all, but I probably wouldn't have gotten as deeply interested nor be as ardent about the pairing if I hadn't first encountered people trying to ban it.
4. What is your stance on "Quidditch-toned thighs"?
Against the wall, naked, hands splayed to brace, probably standing on a small footrest even with someone as short as Harry. Or is that my stance "with" QTT, rather than "on" QTT?
I think QTT is something of a cliché, but fanfic builds great stories from clichés. Done well, it's a good addition to a story; thrown in because the author wanted an excuse for someone to lust after Harry or Draco, it's a cheap cop-out.
5. Your own fanfiction (any fandom, any pairing): What do you think is your most underappreciated work? What do you think is your best work? Would you link them here for us?
I had to go sort through my LJ stuff to find all my (fairly limited) fic to try to answer this. Pretty much all my fic is available through the My Fic spot in my memories. I'm not sure I'd call any of it "underappreciated;" I was very happy with the replies I got to each of them, and figure they're not getting new readers 'cos they're not in locations that draw new readers. (Someday I'll put something at WTP. Maybe I'll declare "Power Play" to be done and leave it hanging where it is.)
I'm not sure which is "best" either; it might be the Dollhouse drabble from last year's Snarry Games. (At least, that's the one that seemed to hit people hardest. I got almost as many compliments for the funny ones... but funny always draws more comments than comparably well-written serious. It's easier to say "it made me laugh" than "it made me ache.") But I have trouble thinking of 100 words of anything as my "best." My favorite to date is Divine Visitation, a Pope Benedict/Jesus slash written for cordelia_v's Popeslash mini-fest. It's got several nifty squick buttons: breaking religious vows (sort of), RPS, Old Man Sex, sex in church, and probably a couple I don't even notice 'cos I'm such a pervert. I suppose it might count as "underappreciated," but I'm not foolish enough to think that a high-squick obscure-pairing RPS story is going to get the same number of readers as a PG drabble with a popular pair.
6. In your opinion, will Severus Snape turn out to be 'Dumbledore's Man' in Book 7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?
Of course he will. (See me make wild predictions.) However, I'm willing to think that even he may not think so... that Dumbledore may have known him better than he knew himself, and expect Snape to do the right thing accidentally if he can't get himself to choose the honorable path.
7. What do you think of podcasting, the newest fad in fandom? Would you like to hear one of your own stories, or one of your favourites voiced via .mp3?
I think it's an abomination upon the web, and should all be banned until I have a high-speed connection they're all made available in .ogg form, because it's open-source, unlike .mp3s. Yeah. That's it. Podcasts are evil because mp3s are evil. Please to ignore the several hundred mp3 songs on my harddrive.
Okay, more seriously... I've never heard a podcast; I have dialup. 5 minutes/mb for downloads. That siad, I'd be thrilled if someone wanted to podcast one of my stories (I really don't think of myself as a fic author. Or an author, period. I think of myself as a debator.) While I'd like to collect some of my favorites being read, I've never gotten into "books on tape" or "books on disc;" I rarely have time to listen to one thing for that long. It'd take an incredible reading to get me to listen. (I have Harlan Ellison reading several of his stories on tape--that's the level of reading skill I mean.)
8. What pairing have you never written that you would love to try one day? (Any fandom)
Any pairing? Any fandom?
The mind boggles... I had a long answer about Doppelganger slash, and then realized I really do have a specific answer.
I'd love to write (or read, but probably that means write) an Aral/Bothari slash story, preferably set after Barrayar. Something set in Miles' childhood. Darkfic (I can't imagine anything involving Bothari and sex to be other than darkfic), weird consent issues, guilt and angst enough for any three normal pairings. Yeah. That's the one I'd like to write.
9. What's your favourite kink to read?
What, I have to pick just one? Hmm. Kink. "Bondfic" is not a kink, is it? Neither is "institutionalized slavery," both of which are high on my list of favorite story features. Is dub-con a kink? That's probably my favorite--I especially enjoy stories where nobody is sure who's consenting to what. Rushlight's Absolution hits this very strongly.
10. How do you feel about participating in this year's Snarry Games?
Nervous as hell. Deadlines scare me. I don't normally write on demand; I write "when the inspiration hits"... and I stop when it trickles off, which leaves me with a cluster of half-written stories & filksongs in the WIP folders on my hard drive. And the Games started just as my personal life hit some very odd bumps, so I haven't been able to keep up with the "community" aspects... I haven't seen much of the crack!art (dialup account; I need real time to look at art, and it didn't seem prudent to download it at work & save it onto the flash drive to watch at home); I haven't read any of the other interviews, because between personal life & work, I've been swamped. I'm very much enjoying having a fic to write--it gives me something to focus on. And I'm hoping to soon have time to go back and read everything posted since the Games began. I saved out all the fics and interviews from last year's games, with the thought of compiling them into a hardcopy book at some point (when I've got a week or so to play with formatting); I'd like to do that with this year's too.
Mod note: I want a copy! Me! Me!
Thank you, elfwreck!
Stay tuned for the last few CHAMPION INTERVIEWS and at least one more Opening Games Crack!Art!
