gift fic for schemingreader, Snape/Lupin, PG

Recipient: schemingreader

Author: bethbethbeth
Title: Bookends
Characters: Snape, Lupin (with some vague hints of future Snape/Lupin)
Rating: PG
Content Info: *Set during Deathly Hallows. Nothing else apart from some 'adult' language*
Summary: In the end, there are no secrets.
Disclaimer: The world of HP and its characters belongs to Rowling. The author of this fic has borrowed them for the purposes of storytelling. No profit was or will be made.
Word count: ~2,020
Author Notes: Written with thanks to Simon and Garfunkel's song "Old Friends/Bookends" for both title and inspiration. And thanks so much to G for the beta! [Special note to schemingreader: another story, completely unrelated, but with the same pairing, will be posted in your honor sometime early in the new year. It's the story I originally started to write for you, but which got out of hand before I could finish.]

First, I love the Simon and Garfunkel reference you've made here. This song especially makes sense for these two. Second, it's nice to see the canon characters actually think for a change. I like to think that since the books are in Harry's POV there might have been a few adults who actually knew what was going on. And the hopeful ending is lovely. Cheers!

Wonderful characterization! You capture so much about them. I realize this is a Snape fest and of course you have thought through Snape--his suicidal despair and his simmering resentment and his working-class habits (has to have a pub where he can drink bitter!) but I'm also impressed with your Lupin. He's such a difficult character to capture, since we only see him through Harry's eyes.

Thank you so much! I can't wait to see the rest of the story.

Oh, very nice. You captured these two characters so well and so aptly, developing them into much more than they got to be from Harry's limited POV in the books. Well done!

That is so hopeful! As mentioned above, thinking occurred, but we didn't see it happening since the story was about Harry Potter.

In so few words, such a strong portrait of Severus and Remus, each smart and more human than the books portrayed. In one word: Wow!

Very well-characterized. I like the frame you set up in the opening: parsing the nuances of secrets makes such sense for these two, especially since the conversation reveals a few. The conversation is very believable; Lupin and Snape hold their own against each other very well, and yet the elements of trust are there. Great missing scene.

Very lovely story! I love Remus here–well mannered but he has an edge!

Oh I really liked their interactions! Severus is sublime in his surliness. Nice work.

Very nicely done. Remus is smart and brave, but still obviously wearing his civilly mannered-mask, and Severus is worn-down but not above taking advantage of a gift. I'd love to see more of this, if there is any chance of such a thing!
