Gen, snarry and snupin recs from fests and elsewhere...

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Damn, damn, damn, have "misplaced" half this week's recs!!! It included the (almost) last of the snupin_santa recs (still have to read a couple more stories).
From the recs doc I *did* find, there's some snarry fic and art recs, a snape-centric gen rec, and some snupin stories as well as a rec for this intriguing and quirky little snupin series.
So without further delay:

Snape - gen
Auld Lang Syne
Author: [info]torino10154
Rating: Gen
Warning/s: none
Summary: Minerva receives a surprise Christmas gift.

From LJ's mini-fest. You know how some stories make you a little envious of the writer's skill, even as you're admiring it? That's how I reacted to this story when I first read it as an anonymous entry in LJ's mini_fest. So much conveyed in so few words, without sentimentality or melodrama. Beautifully subtle and understated, and very effective.

Snarry Fic and Art:
An accident in time
Author: [info]ciraarana
Word count: 37,500
Rating: nc-17
Warning/s: chan (15+); bottom!snape
Summary: One evening, Harry opens the door to an unexpected visitor, and is faced with a boy who looks and sounds like a younger version of Severus Snape. Exactly like a younger version.

From snarry_swap. This story is great reading. I'm fond of de-aged plots, and am always delighted when some clever writer works out new ways for the de-aging to play out, as occcured here. Lots of lovely scene-building convinced me that this relationship worked, and I enjoyed the UST, the sex and the sweet ending.
I'm not sure if I've read anything by this author before, but I'll look out for more of her/his stories in the future.

Lost
Artist: [info]vividzephyr
Word count: n/a - ART
Rating: G
Warning/s: none
Summary: Young Severus mourns Lily's death.

From SSBBBB. So very moving, this art is beautiful. Severus as a young man, his expression intense, is gazing at some butterflies. There's so much in this picture, grief, loss, longing, hopes and desires, the shattering of those hopes and desires - any and all of all the emotional states that accompany profound loss, and they all hurt. There's a simplicity in this art (this is not emo Snape) that is utterly moving and evocative. Do go and admire!

Animal Husbandry: Not really what it sounds like
Author: [info]eeyore9990
Word count: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/snarry_swap/40534.html
Rating: nc-17
Warning/s: Ritualistic sex and the sacrificing of animals
Summary: In which Snape fists a sheep, thestrals die, and Harry turns to Snape for help (the sexy kind). Well, two out of three ain't bad.

From snarryswap. This is a lovely, light read - so funny, and sexy and sweet too. I challenge you to read it without undignified sniggering and snorting...
Harry seeks out Severus to ask for help with Hogwarts' ailing thestral herd. With much hilarious banter, and the help of Luna, Charlie and Hagrid, Harry and Severus save the day. Don't let the warnings alarm you too much, because although the warnings are accurate, there is little dark here. Read and enjoy.

Snupin recs:
Open Hand
Author: scribbulus_ink (McKay)
Word count: ~6,000
Rating: nc-17
Warning/s: not canon compliant in that Snape and Lupin survive the war and Teddy isn't Remus' biological child, mutual masturbation, use of Legilimency during sex, desperation, established relationship
Summary:After the war, Severus must decide whether or not he wants to pick up where he left off with Remus, and Remus helps him make up his mind.

From the hp_yule_balls - A thoughtful, considered piece; while Remus cares for him as he recovers from Nagini's attack, Severus ponders on his past relationship With Remus and wonders about their future. Only Remus is speaking; unable to speak because of his injuries, Severus wordless' communication plunges the reader into his thoughts - an effective and moving technique.

Silvery Reflections Part VI of The Patronus Series (link takes you to part 6, where there are links to the earlier parts.)
Author: [info]omni_sama (aka Rip_von_Christ)
Rating: pg-13
Warning/s: none
Summary: The Patronus series begins with an exploration of what one's patronus reveals - and in a sly feat of misdirection, Severus manages to distract Remus from discovering what his own patronus form might be. Each new chapter explores the patronus theme, following Remus and Severus through the years...
(sorry if the summary fails - no author summary displayed.)

I've enjoyed this whole series, and do a little squee when it appears, but with this chapter I fell utterly in love. Until now, only Remus' pov has appeared, this is the first chapter from Severus' pov. And how brilliant it is. Omni_sama has enriched the story by adding this extra perspective - and it's so deliciously effective, as the reader discovers the differences between the two perspectives and how utterly wrong each character can be about the other's motivation.
This chapter includes the funniest incidents (the bat, omg, the bat! And then the thought of Ginny and Ron justifying the bat...) Although short, this chapter made me smile, be miserable, burst out laughing and cheer on the characters. And the 'unromantic' romantic line - aww!

The Frog Prince
Author: [info]scribbulus_ink and [info]arionrhod
Word count: 17,700
Rating: R
Warning/s: none
Summary: Non-magical AU. Two writers learn about the true power of words to forge connections.

I love epistolary stories - they can it convey such intimacy. While The Frog Prince contains narrative and dialogue, the story focus is directed by the letters (or emails to be exact) that Remus and Severus send each other in the first part. A lovely way to convey the intimacy and connection between them developing as their communication continues.
[info]scribbulus_ink and [info]arionrhod craft their work so well - their stories are always a joy to read. The pace of the story is perfect, enticing the reader slowly into the world the co-authors have created. And it's a sweet story, a romantic love story, with a satisfying conclusion. Another to read and enjoy!

Ok, the "lost" recs will have to wait until next week. Do please remember to comment and let the creators know if you liked their work.
  • You are far too kind. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it. :)
    • You know I loved it. Was even (rudely) grumbling in the comments that I wished I'd written it when it was still an anonymous posting.
