Happy New Year!
Well, it's been a while, but it's time for me to get back into Friday Fic Recs...

Today's offerings are all from snupin_santa. I haven't finished this year's snupin_santa reading - hell, I'm not even half way through yet, but here a few that jumped out at me. There may be considerable overlap with [info]geri_chan's recs, as I' ve been using her recs and those of [info]r_grayjoy as starting places for my own reading.

The Romance
Author: snupin_santa
Word count: 34,812
Rating: Coal and Switches (NC17)
Warning/s: None
Summary: Busaikko wanted a non-magical AU, supermarket-aisle paperback romance with unusual careers. Here it is, sweetie, and I hope it brings to you a fraction of the pleasure your fics have given to me.

Well, I'm besotted with this one. It's enchanting (despite being a non-magic AU without any enchantment in sight), it's absorbing, it will swallow you up until the very end.

Severus and Remus are railway workers, working together as a team. I know, railroads, it sounds the most boring thing possible - but it is wonderful! The mystery author clearly has done their research - they know their trains, and the routines of railways, and it all somehow works brilliantly. A new worker enters the railway station where Remus works, the mysterious and appealing Severus Snape, and a beautifully paced romance develops.

This story is so very complete - so satisfying and fulfilling - I damn near came to tears because it was just so perfect. Not perfect as in "too perfect to be true", but perfect as a convincing and satisfying portrayal of a developing relationship between these two men. The characterizations are spot on and richly developed, the story itself is rich in detail and authenticity, and well-sustained.

I couldn't stop reading and yet I was hoping it would never end.
If you don't plan on reading all of snupin_santa 2009, do please read this one, it's marvelous!

Mad Wolves and Englishmen
Author: snupin santa
Word count: 17,435
Rating: Coal and Switches (NC17)
Warning/s: None
Summary: When two quarreling Order members are sent on holiday together, they quickly discover that Albus Dumbledore is a strong believer in ‘bonding through adversity’. In this case, ‘adversity’ is a town called Purgatory, Texas.

This soon develops into the kind of story that has you grinning, smirking and outright laughing while you read. If, like me, you do a lot of reading on public transport (and standing in queues, waiting for trams...) do be aware that other people will become awfully interested in your reading material unless you've perfected the blank face look.

This is such enjoyable reading: I savoured every second of reading this marvelous story. There's a lovely use of language, and the environment Severus and Remus find themselves in is well-constructed and sustained. The portrayal of Severus is great - hearing his inner thougts is hilarious and insightful -he is very much his own worst enemy, with hilarious results. He fights his attraction to Remus, tooth and nail. But to no avail - the story develops into divinely, deliciously sexiness as Severus struggles against his desires. The UST is marvelous, the OC's wonderfully portrayed and Remus is a joy, adapting to the strange, new environment with laconic ease. Read and enjoy!

Bungle in the Jungle
Author: snupin santa
Word count: 36,810
Rating: Holiday Spice (R)
Warning/s: None
Summary: After being stranded in the middle of nowhere, temperamental chef turned TV host Severus Snape develops a new-found appreciation for his capable right-hand man, Remus Lupin.

This one is another joy to read: funny and quirky and so very enjoyable. Severus is wonderfully characterized and the opening descriptions of Remus are priceless - unique and utterly perfect. All I could think when his character was introduced was "Yes! Why haven't I noticed that before?"

The UST build-up was perfectly paced, not so slow that I'm inwardly shrieking "just DO it already!" but developing a lovely sense of anticipation. The humour was delightful, and the ending was sweet and sexy. Indeed the story as a whole was sweet, sexy and wonderfully satisfying. Another to read and enjoy!

A Tutor for Teddy
Author: snupin_santa
Word count: 7,307
Rating: Holiday Spice (R)
Warning/s: None
Summary: Remus hires Teddy a tutor, but it's Remus who ends up learning a thing or two.

I know some people adore bringing-up-Teddy-fics (I suspect we'll be reading something from geri_chan here later, as this is a genre geri loves). Not a genre I'm especially drawn to, but included here because it seems to be a good example of a nicely-written Teddy-fic. And there are snupin elements here I particularly adore - the Severus-is-living-in-disguise trope, which is given a delightful twist by the way Lupin is attracted and yet not, and the deliciously depicted accidental witnessing of a passionate moment.
Teddy was nicely characterized - mischievous, bright, sweet and very energetic. And his last line was enchanting and the perfect conclusion to the story.

Confessional
Author: snupin_santa
Word count: 5,396
Rating: Holiday Spice (R)
Warning/s: None
Summary: Years after the war against Voldemort finally ended, Remus Lupin turns up in Chicago under the guise of one Roger Wolf, a freelance translator working for a publishing firm. His latest assignment is a best selling novel by a most reclusive author. As Remus finds himself sucked into a muggle story very reminiscent of his own past, he begins to suspect the reclusive author might be more than he seems.

I was particularly surprised when I entered the word count above - this story is incredibly well-developed and sustained for so few words. Such a complete and satisfying story, with an interesting scenario as the initial plot premise. The characters and events unfold and develop as though from a much longer story, and the eventual outcome is satisfying. And those last few lines that Severu speaks... a perfect conclusion!

Of Celluloid and Fate
Author: snupin_santa
Word count: 4487
Rating: Coal and Switches (NC17)
Warning/s: None
Summary: Cinemaphile Severus Snape only wanted to enjoy his first holiday in a place where no one knew him. So what the hell was Remus Lupin doing there? A little imagining of how the boys might have found each other after the first war.

A brief glimpse of an unexpected encounter in France sometime after the first Voldemort War, this mananges to be raw, heart-wrenching and poignantly painful. Severus is insecure, bitter and angry, and Remus is so far down on his luck. Between them is anger and genuine dislike -their interaction is gritty, raw and sexy.

Interesting. I wouldn't actually think that a romance novel could have come out of railroads. I've adventured down a few abandoned ones, and found some cool railroad materials (http://www.yangtzeproducts.com/product-cataloge/Track%20Materials/index%20old.html), but my girlfriend finds them creepy. I guess I just don't associate romance with them because of her.
