Snupin fic recs

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

[info]lupin_snape is currently having a for the month of August: members have signed up to rec Snupin fics every day this month, (I'll be reccing this Sunday on the 9th). I found some wonderful new fics to read, and re-discovered a few old favorites, so I thought I'd share some of the titles that I enjoyed the most, plus a new rec of my own. Please continue to check out the recs throughout the month if you enjoy this pairing!

First, two old favorites...

Title: Thirteen Ways
Author: Sinope
Rating: R
Pairing: Lupin/Snape (mention of previous Remus/Sirius)
Summary: Facets of a relationship of necessity. Too little is given and too much is wanted, but Lupin and Snape don't have the luxury of new beginnings. Post-OotP.
Disclaimer: The characters and events of the Harry Potter books belong to J.K. Rowling. What I write is only a fan work in tribute to her skill.
Notes: "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird," as quoted throughout the story, is by Wallace Stevens. Other notes at the end.

I read this one years ago, on the Snape_n_Lupin Yahoo Group mailing list, way before I'd even heard of LJ, so it was nice to be reminded of it and have the opportunity to read it again, thanks to [info]electriclady88's rec. I went and dug up the original feedback I left on the fic, and this is what I said: "This was a beautiful and bittersweet story. It was touching, and a little sad, to watch the pair awkwardly fumbling their way to intimacy. Not a happily-ever-after fairy tale, but a realistic portrayal of a new relationship gradually developing. I was disappointed with Harry for turning against Lupin, but his bitterness is in character, considering the way he felt at the end of Book 5."

In retrospect, what I really like about it is how hard both Lupin and Snape work at making the relationship work--it's not at all an easy romance. I know that some Snape fans have trouble believing that a Snape/Lupin relationship would work, but I think this fic believably shows how it could happen.

Title: The Lukewarm Trilogy (Lukewarm, Mine, Out of Darkness)
Author: Juxian Tang
Rating: R, NC-17, and PG-13 respectively
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Warnings: Non-con and torture for "Mine"

Like "Thirteen Ways," this is a painful but satisfying fic, one in which Lupin and Snape don't just fall in love and live happily ever after, but really have to work at the relationship. It doesn't even start off as a real relationship, but more of a "friends with benefits" kind of deal, except that they aren't really friends, either. But gradually sex turns into something more, and they struggle to make things work--not without some difficulties along the way, arguments and misunderstandings, not to mention Snape getting kidnapped by Death Eaters. Go read [info]nehalenia's rec, whic describes it so much better than I can.

And an older fic from last year's Snupin Santa, but still new to me...

Title: Once Upon a War
Author: [info]skree_ratling
Word Count: 9757
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Rating: Hard R
Summary/Prompt: Severus has had a serious Muggle hobby all along to keep himself from going crazy from the stress: he's a member of the SCA, preferably as a fighter or fencer. A year after surviving the battle of Hogwarts, he's shocked to see a familiar werewolf wandering about at the Pennsic War.... Romance and sex, please, with optional Teddy. Can be as SCA-specific as you like.

This one is a fun fic to read, much lighter the previous fics above. It's set in a post-war AU, where Snape survived (though nearly everyone thinks he's dead), and is hiding in the Muggle world. In his spare time, he's a Knight in the Society for Creative Anachronism, and Lupin and Teddy happen to run into him at an SCA event. It shows a relaxed and happy Snape, one who's had a chance to shed some of his old bitterness and make a fresh start. As he tells Lupin: "The Society is an entirely Muggle organisation. One of the reasons I joined was because no one knew who I was. There was no… baggage. I had a clean slate. I could be any one I wanted, someone different."

The author really brings the SCA scenes to life--they're  vivid and full of color, and not at all difficult to understand even if you don't know anything about the SCA, although there is a glossary of SCA terms included at the end of the fic. The fic also has a wonderful OC in Eloise, Snape's friend in the SCA who plays meddling matchmaker once she senses the sparks between Snape and Lupin. While I'm not an expert in the SCA, I have friends who were members, so the fic brought back some fond memories.

I had somehow missed reading this one last year, so I'm grateful to [info]ellid for reccing it.

And finally, a rec of my own, a little preview of Sunday's rec for lupin_snape...

Title: Hidden in Plain View, Parts I, II, III, IV, and V
Author: [info]ellid
Challenges: Pluto (and the rest of the solar system) for [info]snape100, conventions [info]lupin100
Word Count: 100 each
Note: Set post-war but ignoring DH.

A hilarious series of drabbles about Snape and Lupin tracking down a Death Eater who is hiding at a Star Trek convention. As someone who went to several of those over the years, I was tickled to see a fic that combined two of my fandoms! Also, how can you not love a fic where a knowledge of Klingons turns out to be crucial in catching a Death Eater? ^_^
