Summary: Harry and Severus discuss gifts, and their worth.
A/N: For the lovely BertaS on her birthday. *hugs Mama Puff* I hope it’s a spectacular one! Prompts: green ribbons, the phrase “You did do a lovely job of wrapping it.”
Harry lay curled up on the couch, wrapped in Severus’ arms. Severus ran his fingers up and down Harry’s forearm, basking in his lover’s warmth.
“Today was good, hm?” Harry asked, and Severus smiled.
“It was,” he admitted, pulling Harry a bit closer. “Your—our friends were not completely insufferable. And the gifts were certainly more appropriate than they have been in years past.”
“Oh, hush,” Harry laughed. “You know you had a good time.” He frowned slightly, tipping his head so he could look at Severus. “And what’s wrong with what they’ve gotten you before?”
Severus snorted. “The chess set Weasley gave me three years ago? As if I didn’t already have pieces that were attuned to me perfectly well.”
“Give him a break,” Harry grinned, kissing Severus’ chin. “He didn’t know you that well, then.”
“Hmm. I suppose that explains the first gift you ever gave me.”
Harry stilled. “You didn’t like the potions book I got you for Christmas?”
Severus frowned. Maybe that hadn’t been the right thing to say. “That is not to say I didn’t appreciate it,” he added, wanting to wipe the almost hurt look off Harry’s face. “I did, very much so.”
“Oh, come off it,” Harry insisted, twisting his body so he could look Severus in the eye without turning his head. “How awful was it? Just tell me.”
“Terrible,” Severus conceded, twining his arms back around Harry so he couldn’t escape. “Waldsworth’s theories were completely discredited in the late eighties. To this day, I sometimes wonder where on earth you found the thing.”
Harry sighed. “Well, this year’s was better,” he said. Severus could tell he was looking for encouragement.
“It was,” he affirmed, tucking Harry to his chest and pressing a kiss to the top of his head. “Much.”
They sat together in silence for several minutes, but Severus could tell Harry was still thinking about the book.
“You did do a lovely job of wrapping it,” Severus allowed, casting his mind back to the neat silver package complete with a green ribbon tied into a bow.
Harry gave him a playful shove. Severus was glad he was smiling again. “Wasn’t exactly difficult to do, Severus.”
“No,” Severus agreed. “But it took thought and effort. And regardless of the book’s usefulness, you chose it for me.” He leaned further back into the cushions, pulling Harry with him. “That means a great deal, Harry. You notice it has remained on my shelves since the day you gave it to me.”
“Has it?” Harry smiled. “I hadn’t noticed.”
“Perhaps not. But I do.” He bent his head and captured Harry’s lips with his own, sharing soft, slow kisses.
Harry closed his eyes. “Today was good,” he repeated, burrowing his head in the crook of Severus’ neck.
Severus smiled. “It was.”
