A hand fell onto his shoulder, and Severus looked up.
Harry.
“Hey,” Harry said softly, sinking down to the floor next to him. “Remus told me he’d punched you. I figured I should come and see if you were all right.” He raised a hand to Severus’ face and wiped away some of the blood—Severus didn’t have the strength to push him away.
“Why haven’t you healed it yet?” Because I deserve it. Because I hurt you.
Because I’m a coward.
“Episkey,” said Harry, when it was clear Severus wasn’t going to answer him. “Come on. Let’s get you home.”

“He’s better for you,” Severus said quietly as Harry guided him toward his bed.
Harry stopped short. “I don’t want him,” he replied, a softness in his eyes. “I want you.”
“I’m old.”
“No one my age understands me.”
“I’m ugly.”
“I think you’re beautiful.”
“I’m harsh.”
“You’re gentle with me.”
“I’m afraid.”
Harry stilled. “So am I,” he replied softly. “But…I want you. I want this. And I’ll do whatever it takes for us to have it.”
Severus didn’t know how to reply. Harry kissed his forehead. “Sleep,” he said, a soft smile on his face. “We can talk in the morning.”

“Lupin,” Severus said as he walked into the staffroom, an air of command in his voice.
Severus couldn’t remember the last time he’d been looked upon with such vitriol. “What?” Lupin snapped, and Severus could hear the threat of further violence in his voice.
But Severus was not a coward. “I would like your permission to formally court Harry Potter.”
Lupin’s jaw dropped. From behind him he heard a sharp intake of breath, then Harry’s voice, clearly bewildered.
“You—what?”
Severus turned around to pull him into his arms. “I’m afraid,” he echoed. “But I want this. You.”
Harry beamed.
