Awesome Is As Awesome Does (And He Sure Is Awesome.)
With all the DCAU love going on today, I thought I'd post some scans from an issue dedicated to the most badass member of the Batfamily.

The issue begins with Batman asking the other members of the BatTeam for help to save Alfred. Alfred being the lovable manservant he is, they all freak out at his kidnapping and attempt to go save him right away. They make it about five feet before a new round of bad guys attack. Meanwhile...

Alfred arranges to get the man out of the room by asking him to escort the other kidnapped victims elsewhere, telling him that he won't reveal the secret until they're alone. The remaining lackeys complain about their hunger, which Alfred promptly takes advantage of.

Can anyone pin down whenabouts Alfred started to be badass? In his introduction he was very much the comedy relief servant (and I suppose it was only luck that he wasn't a cariacatured black servant). By the Silver Age he seemed to be getting cooler (Alan Napier gave the impression of being more than he let on in the wacky old Adam West series), but it's the Modern Age where the badassness really got ramped up (he also turned into what TVTropes would call a Deadpan Snarker, which I was particularly struck by when first reading Frank Miller's DKR. Dunno if Miller's responsible for that particular element, though).

Alfred has always been my favorite character, this post shows just how awesome he is!!!! He used to be a spy, he knows how to do everything (cooking, cleaning, fighting, hypnotizism, etc), he raised Bruce and can stare him down while lesser men tremble, and is the most stable of the Bat family. I second Alfed week!

The fact Alfred has been kidnapped 27 times before (that Bruce knows about) is the icing on the cake, really. I love the fact that Alfred just looks bored, but I guess this would be old news for him.

I don't know why Morrison tried to turn Bruce into Batgod. If he wanted to write Batgod, all he had to do is write Alfred correctly.

take a look at the bat-shadow in the last page. You know the one Bruce always casts whether in costume of not?

I'd say that's coming from Alfred give the position Batman's standing in.
