Tag Trolling
The Van Lente controversy has brought us an influx of new members and anons. Which is great, but we've also had another round of tag trolling. For the time being, tags are maintainer-only.

What does this mean?

Only [info]skalja, [info]angelophile, [info]sandoz_iscariot and myself have the ability to add, delete or edit tags, for new and existing entries.

We ask that members add a list of tags to the body of their posts, so that the mod team can C&P them into the tag field.

Anything that the team misses during the down time, will be caught up via backtagging by mods, wranglers, and other members.

We will keep you posted.

I was wondering why the tag button disappeared in the middle of my tagging my post.

Not as bad as the time I played Phantasmagoria II. While you read the character's texts, some of the words in the corners blur to 'murder' and the like. The first time it happened, I HONESTLY thought it was me imagining things. Seriously mindbending game.

But yeah, there's been huge amounts of nethacks lately, to the point I've been having to clean my system twice a day. I was cut off from the net this weekend because I installed a new badass firewall. It got corrupted and wouldn't let me go internet at all! Just like a Star Trek holodeck scenario. :)

Phantasmagoria II seriously messed me up back in ... jesus, 1999. Has it been ten years since I played that? DAMN.

I can't imagine actually trying to play that game. Hell, it took me three trys to actually make it through the opening video, and that was with the benifit of Spoony's commentary.

I was nineteen years old, bored, single, and was just introduced to the Adventure genre. I got this plus part one (which I NEVER beat because the game literally trapped me in the final chapter), and Gabriel Knight 1+2 from a mail order company. I'd just gotten my first PC, see.

Wow, time flies.

I never buy m own games unless they're ones I've already played. i just wait till my birthday or Christmas and let my relatives buy me stuff at random, that way if it's crap it's still no loss. A win-win situation.

Why bother? Clearly, there would be little point in consigning you to hell; if you truly can't appreciate the stunning atmosphere, simple yet brilliant puzzles, and quietly compelling storyline of such a beautiful game, you're living in a tragic, colorless purgatory already.

Actually, I like my puzzle games to make sense.

When a game is inaccessible to your average gamer right from the start, you have a serious design flaw. And I did give the game series a lot of chances. And all those times, the game just wouldn't -work-.

Well, Riven wasn't as good as Myst and past Riven pretty much none of them caught the magic at all, so I wouldn't say the series is particularly worth it, no. But I wouldn't call it inaccessible. Part of the puzzle is figuring out what you're supposed to be figuring out. I can totally grok why that's irritating, I don't think I've ever not loathed that device when I see it in a book or a comic or a movie, but it worked for me with Myst because it's a game; with a story I just have to wait for the author to finally deign to tell me what the fuck is going on, but with a game I can go explore until I find out, so there's a sense of moving forward.

Well, anon comments are still screened by default, yes? That limits us to the more talented, careful trolls, and while they're clearly out in force, a careful troll who isn't relying on anonymity is seldom a dramatic one.

I suppose. But I would think that the hseer size of new posters coupled with the...enthusiasm that was generated like a snowball rolling down a hill would lead to people getting confident and then careless.

You can probably track where the controversy is by looking for the posts with hundreds of comments.

I think it goes like this:

The page in Amazing Spider-Man that started it.

Van Lente's first response to questions about the scene. Which got linked by other people's big-name blogs, which is where I'm guessing all the sudden newcomers came from and why InsaneJournal got so slow and buggy last night.

Van Lente's response after his first response was posted.

[info]groosealoose's self-made comic mocking s_d members who got angry about the issue.

And all the recent posts about other examples of rape in comics spun off of all that.
