For those of you who haven't read The Stand, it's about a truly apocalyptic superflu outbreak and what remains afterward. It's my favorite Stephen King book of all.

Well, that certainly qualifies as horror to me.

Hmmm... one wonders how long any military organisation could stay unified since they are presumably as susceptible to this massively deadly contagion as anyone else.

In the book, I think the military (well, the US in general--and it's mentioned that they might have set it off in other countries as well, but those aren't detailed) collapsed pretty quickly.

These scans are actually from the issue where the villain of the book (one of my favorite villains ever) is introduced, but I focused in on these ones because I thought it would be more relevant and therefore creepy.

Yes, the president order the release of the Captain trips flu to 17 other countries so if America goes down so will the world.

Admittedly, it's been a loooong time since I read the book, but I don't recall that happening.

Granted, as I said I have only read the un a bridged version. I think it has like 300 more pages.

I think you're mixing it up with another character.

Wikipedia: As the commanding officer of Project Blue, [General William "Billy" Starkey] is aware that the superflu is almost impossible to control once loose. But he covers up the accident and its ensuing pandemic as long as he can; under his leadership, journalists who try to reveal the truth are murdered. In an attempt at retaining plausible deniability, he orders a contingency plan into effect: to release the virus on several other continents in an effort to make it seem as though the U.S. did not create it artificially. After being dismissed by the President due to his failure to contain the virus, he commits suicide in the laboratory where the superflu was created.

Flagg's my favorite King character as well. It's kind've funny that I've only read The Stand once, considering.

Flagg's just my favorite villain. My favorite characters overall are Nick Andros and Tom Cullen, with Roland running in third place, and Flagg in the "fourth overall" place.

Still, Flagg's an excellent villain. I follow him on twitter. XD (There are a bunch of folks reenacting The Stand on Twitter recently, but the person playing Flagg seems to be the most into it and enthusiastic about it, and is one of few who communicates with non-characters in addition to the other people playing the characters from the book.)

What's his twitter account?

Also, have you read the final Dark Tower novel yet? I want your opinion on something but I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't read it...

It's VegasWalkinDude. He's pretty entertaining for being a slimy villain-type.

Yeah, I've read it. I knew the ending already, even before I read it, but that's just because I'm a relentless spoiler-hound. XD

***DT7 SPOILERS***

What did you think of Flagg's death? Personally, it pissed me off so much it ruined the rest of the book (and to an extent, the series as a whole). I mean, I liked other parts of it (such as the Blue Heaven scenes) but it left a permanent stain IMO.

It bothered me a bit, honestly. I was crossing my fingers for something really cool and epic, like a battle at the top of the Tower between Roland and Flagg, but... yeah, it didn't turn out that way. Disappointing.

one thing i loved about the Dark Tower series was that I LOVED the fact that the Tet-Corporation basically had gunslingers, true gunslingers.

I also loved that the rebirth of the Ka-tet, or at least a partial Ka-tet was hinted at, with Susannah asking if there was a Tet-Corporation and that if there was they still had work to do... that left SOOO many Possibilities open, i am positively giddy that King might pick up some of those threads.

One thing i find...confusing is the ending, i mean i understand what happened, but what I dont understand is... well, Roland's impetus for going to the Dark Tower was in part due to Randall Flagg and the Crimson king, but the CK is basically gone and so is Flagg. The Tower is saved. I know the idea of Ka being a circle and circles always end wehre they begin and begin where they end... buti guess my confusion is... all things serve the Tower... what the Tower and the Beams healing, other than the fact that he WANTS to stand at the Tower what now? i know what he HAS to do, he has to learn, and the fact he had what he had in his hands at the end proves he is learning... but still....

i think imay have confused myself...

I'd like to think the military would never help the Government suppress the news. The military's oath is to the *Constitution*, not to the Government.

This is one of King's best books. Used to hate the guy when I was younger, but have grown to enjoy his writing style. Never seen a comic adaptation before, and must say, kinda like this point of view. Is it worth checking out other adaptations? I know The Dark Tower has been done?

I loved the Dark Tower adaptations/expansions on Roland's past, but unfortunately, we can't post those there, since PAD did them.

IMO, the DT comics have been very mediocre overall. Some good moments, but pretty underwhelming when judged as whole. Besides, at this point, the Dark Tower comics is almost over so you're better off waiting a couple of months, maybe a year, and just getting all the trades from your library.

So the horror for me was not only the police-state and virus, but the fact that my college was the one that got plowed down.

And what makes it worse upon further inspection is that the artist did a fairly decent enough drawing campus. The skyline doesn't have that many tall buildings (really, from the point on campus, all you can really see is Patterson Office Tower and and the Big Blue Building), but the scenes with the students were recognizable. The scene where the students are meeting is in front of POT and the scene with the dead is by Whitehall Classroom Building...Ugh...this is creepy.

The scenes of society breaking down were the most effective to me when I was reading The Stand. Then it went into the Randall Flagg and Mother Abigail stuff and lost me.

I agree with the former statement--it was definitely effective--but I still liked the Flagg vs Mother Abigail thing, too. (Flagg is actually my favorite villain of all time, truth be told.)

Though I thought the way that Flagg was done in was kind of crap. I thought it should have been a bit more grandiose and epic. Granted, bombs are pretty fuckin' epic, but still...

When I was first year at Uni. I wanted to go to Amsterdam on a class trip. To get money I did a blood screening medical trial. It was 10 days and you couldn't leave a 3 room area. To cope with this I picked up THE UNABRIDGED "The Stand" and read it. Some fucked up dreams those nights let me tell you.

I picked up the original-published-version of The Stand last year and couldn't put it down. I literally spent the entire three-day weekend sitting in my apartment reading it, and only got up when I got hungry.

Now I've got the unabridged version, and I'm enjoying reading through it again. :D

Y'all better get your Swine Flu shots.

The Stand is my favorite King book, I've read it quite a few times. I am waiting for this to trade so I can read it one sitting. But I do wonder how is the scene of Larry going through the Tunnel in NYC? The sequence in the book seriously freaked me out the first time I read it.

Fun fact: I read the abridged version of this book when I was sixteen - thirteen years ago.

And it's part of the reason why I'm so messed up now.

(Admittedly, I read a ton of King's novels back then. And I loved almost all of them... except Salem's Lot. What a disappointment that was...)

Yeah, I didn't like Salem's Lot much, either.

My first King book was Cujo, when I was thirteen. Then I read Carrie and Pet Sematary and kind of accidentally stole them from the school library.

I had a bargin with my dad that I was allowed to read Stephen King when I turned 11, I'd been hounding him for a couple of years before that, and The Stand was one of the first I read, and still one of my favourites of his. All these scans of the comics are reallly making me want to go and get hold of the unabridged version.
