Grand Comic Book Database doesn't have this issue catalogued, but, judging by the dates of the issues that were catalogued, I'd say around 1953-1954.

I got as far as nine times out of ten it was your fault your significant other cheated, not the other woman's. Men should be just as offended as women. As if a guy isn't capable of talking out his problems. Mid-20th century you were so backasswards!

So. Much. RAGE.

My eyebrows went up off my head at "It's YOUR fault he strayed!" and into the next galaxy at "If there's any making over to do, it'll have to be in your department..."

It's odd, but once you get past that, a lot of this is good, if basic, relationship advice. Don't marry someone you don't really like, be honest, don't take your husband for granted... (though the way they put that last one is approaching Stepford Wife territory).

I suppose that from a writer's standpoint, "this is why your husband is cheating on you" is better than "this is why your husband doesn't seem to like you very much anymore."

Yeah, I think I'll just keep my husband locked up in a little room in the basement. That would be easier.

Ironically, I was listening to the "Thunder Rolls" while reading this. Not the special version where the lady shoots her husband, though.

I'm confused. These rules seem to imply the responsibility for infidelity always lies with the woman. But who's fault is it if I cheat on my girlfriend? Is it still my fault if she cheats on me? Does it depend on our relative ranks on the butch-femme scale? This is all much too complicated for my dizzy female brain.

Silly female. If the man strays it's ALWAYS your doing in the world of romance comics!

Which. Always. Sucked. And. Were. Evil. Mind. Poison.

The "don't rush for a gun" bit reminded me of that Marvel Romance Redux where the jilted character was thinking to herself "Wouldn't the world be a better place if we all had guns? God knows I wish I had one right now!"

See, I don't know how to be more offended.

Let's see, obviously the article tells us that it's always the woman's fault for her man straying.

But why? Because, of course, men are just penises with legs with zero self-control or responsibility, who are obviously too stupid to control themselves.

So while I do feel for the feminists in the audience, as a man I'm quite offended by this as well. Because we don't really come off looking any better, as a group.

Of course, the gun reference at the end just makes it funny. Anyway.

Well, one of the arguments we feminists like to remind people of is that standard, male-dominant, culturally-ubiquitous sexism hurts men too. "Women are dangerous creatures against whose sexual wiles men are helpless" locks men into roles that aren't any more natural or sane than the ones the women endure, it's very true.

Less likely to get stoned, though, typically. (By which I of course mean the unfun kind of stoning, not the type that leads to Cractionary and Final Crisis and advice of this nature actually making sense. ^^)

This is really the exception in popular culture. Almost always in romance novels, movies and TV shows, the wife cheats (because the husband is ignoring her or she's bored) and it's lauded as exciting, naughty, liberating, whatever. (Is DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES still on?) Generally, in pop culture if the wife cheats, it's the husband's fault for not being attentive enough. If the husband cheats, it's still his fault for being weak or sleazy. Again, those hundreds of LIFETIME made-for-TV movies which air every day reinforce this.

None of the women I know say they agree with this or even approve of the message being sent. But one explained it's a little escapist fantasy, like the one for guys where a man walks in a bar and beats up five thugs bigger than he is.

I don't know about that. I have an old etiquette book from the early 1900s and while it's too prim and proper to talk about infidelity, it pretty much puts everything on women.

Also keep in mind that this isn't a story meant to entertain or titillate, but advice for women in relationships. These are the kind of expectations that were heaped upon women (be the perfect maid, cook, fashion model, lover, mother, but don't get boring, and don't nag, and don't bother him about your problems, because it's all about him and keeping him happy, not you), and when you think about past attitudes toward women's rights, it's small wonder stories about the woman having some romantic adventure would be appealing.
