Let's enjoy some beautiful art from "Blacksad: Red Soul"
Greetings people of scans_daily! First time poster here who thought perhaps we could all take a break from Marvel and DC comics and enjoy some scans in English for the last Blacksad volume I managed to find (it's 54 pages). I give you all a little bit of:

Blacksad Vol. 3: Red Soul

First off, for the dial-uppers, here are the links!

He's good at what he does
Whatever happens in Vegas...
He chooses physics over girls?
None of my lectures were ever like THIS
Enjoying the view
A dog that can't swim. Irony...
He has a point
A literal example of a "Big-Lipped Alligator Moment"?
Get rid of that cursed hat
"Crown jewels"?
Blacksad? Run. NOW.
3, 2, 1...
If you think about it, shouldn't Blacksad have tackled the guy INSTEAD of the Professor?
THAT'S gotta sting
Awkward...

We first meet Blacksad as he's now a chaparone/bodyguard for an elderly man named Hewitt Mandeline in Las Vegas (fulfilling a promise he made in the end of Arctic Nation)...

As you can tell, he's having the time of his life (although arguably, it isn't the worst job in the world).

Apparently, the talk about atomic energy isn't well received by the public, since during this time, there was fear of atomic war between Russia and the United States and this was during the time of anti-Communism and the Second Red Scare...

To sum up the backstory: Professor Otto Liebber was a former school teacher of Blacksad who is hinted (though it's not really elborated) that he helped Blacksad during his rebellious teenager years and encouraged him to grow and move past being a runaway and a juvenile delinquent. In fact, Otto fondly calls Blacksad "Prodigal" (I assumed it a nickname from Otto's father who was a minister) and a hidden message between the mentor and former student was "everyone deserves a second chance". Thus, Blacksad looks up to Otto as a father-figure of sorts.

Since Professor Liebber and Blacksad are close friends, Gotfield (the Dalmatian and a "smug asshole" as Blacksad endears him as) invites Blacksad to Liebber's party with the other "Twelve Apostles":

But it seems not everything is well even in within the Twelve Apsotles...

It turns out that the assassin (named "Ribs") only killed Otero because he thought he was Professor Liebber due to Otero wearing Liebber's hat. And the rooster you see is Senator Gallo, an allegory to Senator Joe McCarthy...

But due to Otero's death, Blacksad surmises that Professor Liebber's life is in danger and he goes to the university to try to talk him into going into hiding...

And the students arguing in the scan above are because the girls apparently swooned over seeing Blacksad pass by, much to their fellow male classmates' chargin...

THAT is unquestionably one of Blacksad's most bad-assed moments to date.

Blacksad manages to catch up to Ribs and despite laying him a good smackdown, Ribs gets away and strangely enough, Professor Liebber has vanished. Blacksad then talks with his friend Commissioner Smirnov, who tells him that the investigations revealed that the explosive Ribs used was a unknown chemical mixture, nothing that the techs have ever seen before in their lives. Apaprently, the explosive is so complex, they can't identify it. Blacksad then remembers that the genius chemist, Laszlo Herzl, had no love for Professor Leibber and he WAS at Gotfield's party before Otero was killed. Thus, a little visit to Herzl's house...

But just as Blacksad thinks he's got the case closed, he then gets a rather troubling revelation...

It seems the good Professor has been indeed hiding something...

Enjoy! And mods, if I did something wrong, let me know and I'll fix it.

I like the art, but I hate how some of the characters look like humans with animal ears..While others have animal heads..And it figures! Hilter was a kitty!

Oh, awesome. I haven't read any Blacksad since Arctic Nation. I love the art, just love it (look at Blacksad's annoyed kitty face on the second page!).

Don't be too hard on Professor Liebber.

Without spoiling anything, let's just say at the end of the novel, you can't really hate him. Disagree and berate him for his choices, yes, but not hate him.

That sounds like something a Spaniard would say (makes sense, this book is Spanish in origin.)

I wonder if they based this off the original script, or another translation.

I'm looking at the BBQ scene on the beach, and I can't help but wonder. In a world of anthropomorphic animals, where does the meat come from?

Think about it this way: Humans are anthropomorphic animals. Where does our meat come from?

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; I've never understood why it was such a problem for so many people. It can't just be a joke.

Oh, Blacksad. How I love this book. The expressions are just to die for; I could stare for days.

So happy that Dark Horse will be printing the first three books in one volume. Less happy that it seems they'll be shrinking the art down to standard trade size. :(

I've been reading the series in the original (?) French; the art is gorgeous, but I've always been a bit let down about the fact that it's standard noir with animal faces. I go into this in tedious detail in a review of the book on a much-neglected bédé site, and I think I talked about it a fair bit in one of the Exploring Bédé podcasts I do with Bryan Deemer on a semi-irregular basis.

So what about the hot cat-babe on the cover? Does she ever show up again (I presume she's the novelist that catches Blacksad's eye), or is she just an excuse for a nifty visual?
