Resources
At Scans Daily we recognize that not everyone starts from the same place in discussions about privilege and discrimination. We have put together a list of resources to help us navigate this difficult area. Additionally, we've included some netiquette and slang guides, and other helpful links.

  • Peggy McIntosh "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack"

  • "The Privilege of Politeness," The Angry Black Woman

  • The Male Privilege Checklist

  • Appropriate Cultural Appropriation

Conversation
  • How To Ask Good Questions

  • "How To Tell People They Sound Racist." (The moderators of Scans Daily are choosing to link to this video because it's a popular resource used in discussions of how to start dialogue. We don't intend to suggest that it's the only way to start a dialogue, nor the only method our members should use.)

  • What I learned About Tone

  • Thoughts on disability and respectful language

  • Godwin's Law

  • How to post about Nazis and get away with it - the Godwin's Law FAQ

This list is only a start. If there is a resource you would like added to, or removed from this list, please let us know. We consider this project a work in progress to be updated and revised on a semi-regular basis.

As a potential addition: Derailing for Dummies. It's admittedly tongue-in-cheek, but it has a good point about the sort of arguments that come up in attempts to skew a conversation.

I clicked, saw the giant "Congratulations - you have privilege!" and loled heartily. :) Thanks for the link.

If you don't have privilege, you likely would have "entitlement", so maybe it works out.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Oh, "entitlement" is often used as a counterpart to "privilege." ("The world owes me," that sort of thing.) I don't know if the numbers are equal or not, and of course most people don't see themselves as having either privilege or entitlement problems.

And I really should have specified that was a generic "you," not you as an individual. As in, "You work and save and what happens? The company closes." I wasn't addressing that to you specifically. (Maybe English could use a word for the generic "you"?)

"One."

Oh, yes. Thanks, I'll use that. It sounds a bit formal but that is fine with me.

And having now read it through - I really like this piece, and despite its tongue-in-cheekness, think it will be a good addition.

Thanks again. :)

That'll come in handy. On another forum, I get a lot of grief whenever I call out something I find antisemitic, and that grief usually takes the from of something mentioned on that page. From now on, I'll just post the link and tell them to cut and paste their responses.

You gotta be kidding..people have used that 'it was a social experiment!' often enough for it to be a cliche?

It's even in the Fandom Wank Wiki.

You'd be amazed at how often it came up during SciFi RaceFail and the Warnings Wank, along with its sister excuse "Learning Experience". And that's just the big ones. It comes up all the time in particularly stupid FanficRants wanks.

I've seen it being used pretty often actually. And yes, it surprised me the first time I saw it.

Not saying there isn't a lot of truth to the use of stuff like that, but the overarching message that often seems to come across to me from sites like that is that it's impossible to disagree with someone in actual good faith in these situations.
