Emmy misunderstands that "old cat" remark
MOON MULLINS ran from 1923 to 1991, a low-key comedy strip about some denizens of a boarding house. Moon himself was a shady sort of riff-raff, involved in get-rich schemes and bootleg whiskey, crap games and staying out all night with disreputable friends. His little brother Kayo was a tough rascal who slept in the opened drawer of a dresser (for some reason, this detail seems to stick in everyone's memory). There was the obese and outspoken maid Mamie and her no-good husband Willie, Lord Plushbottom, various others. And the landlady was Emmy Schmaltz, never the most gorgeous of women and given to saying, "I'll smack your sassy face!" Yet somehow she always out up with her tenants in what became a sort of family. The folks of MOON MULLINS were not the best role models, but they were likeable and engaging, much like real people you might know.
Here's a typical 1928 strip from creator Frank Willard.
