Ultimatum: Spider-Man Requiem #2

After the events of Ultimatum, Spider-Man was presumed dead after being caught in an explosion at Dr. Strange's house. Only his mask was found. J. Jonah Jameson finally came to his senses and realized that Spider-Man was a hero. Thus, he decided to write an editorial for the Daily Bugle apologizing for his past actions and giving Spidey his proper due. The first issue of Requiem was essentially an untold Spidey story with Jonah's narrative bookending it (as these are stories that Jonah had shelved earlier.) The second issue, for the most part, was pretty much the same.

As the issue ends...

So, it turns out Spidey was alive all along and just buried under some rubble. I'm not surprised that he survived, but I am a bit surprised that he returned this soon and in this fashion. I had assumed that he had been trapped in Dormammu's dimension or some other predicament, and this seems to be a bit anticlimatic. On the bright side, at least the new reboot will start off fresh without any of the baggage from Ultimatum.

Looking back at Ultimatum, I suppose I should be grateful that Spidey's title escaped unscathed compared to what happened to the Ultimates, X-Men and Fantastic Four--no major deaths, no horrific characterization, etc. Now that Spidey's back, the only major change to the status quo is that Jonah has developed as a character, which is hardly a bad thing.

Proving once again the Ult. U exists to prove how awesome Spidey is, especially when written by Bendis.

Aww!

Such a nice scene.

Of course, I doubt JJJ will actually stay pro-spidey.

USM is basically Bendis' creator-owned project; and since the Bugle is ceasing publication as of this issue, there's not really any benefit to keeping JJJ the ranter around.

They're shutting down the Bugle?

I was hoping the Bugle would continue as a website. I somehow doubt they still have presses.

Guarantees Peter a job. He's the webmaster, after all. (No, that will never stop being funny to me.)

It's a shame. I was hoping his girl clone would have the lead in the book for a little while longer.

Wow ... characters actually growing, evolving and becoming better people, in a Spider-Man comic, rather than rehashing '70s and '80s nostalgia bullshit? That's a nice change of pace.

Meanwhile, back in Amazing, we join Mayor Jonah as he flushes yet more taxpayer money down the toilet on hunting down Spider-Man ...

I know, shocking huh? Maybe if something like this sold more then Amazing, they'll finally get it through their fucking heads. Maybe.

Yay! ^^

Though who was that trapped in the giant guy's pendant in Ultimatum? The one who squashed Dr Strange?

That was actually Johnny Storm. The last few UFF issues explained how he got into that situation but the two UFF Requiem issues shows how he gets out of it.

Damn but that's a nice piece of writing.

Not sure about Peter's look in the last panel; "He's holding me rather... tightly there. If he calls me Bucky I am SO out of here"

Peter is giving a look like they just said something really stupid to him.

Cap: Are you okay, son?
Peter: You just dug me out of a pile of RUBBLE, of course I'm not fine.

Heh, this thing with Jonah reminds me of the second Spider-Man movie where Spidey has quit and Jonah starts going on about how he was wrong and Spider-Man was a hero, but then Peter swings by and snatches his suit back out of Jonah's office and Jonah instantly goes back into a rant about how horrible Spider-Man is. lol.

I'll say this much for Ultimatum, it sets the stage for an interesting not-quite-reboot of the whole universe. The shellshocked X-men mentioned by another poster in a different thread, Spidey having been thoroughly traumatized, etc. It could be interesting is all, depending on how it's handled.

Spidey being traumatized has been done to death, actually.
