Super villain thwarted by over achieving interior designer...
The Gray Gargoyle, another cool Marvel ethnic Villain.

First tho' a cool melee with Ms. Marvel.

I dunno when Carol changed outfits, but if John Byrne was not involved he sure loves drawing it.

Interestingly, When Gargoyle touched Iron man he only turned the armour to stone , not tony stark inside. I wonder how you make the hour you til it changes back pass quickly ??

Ok, so Gray Gargoyle has just returned from space. He just wants to get back to his old lab where he keeps the original formula...unfortunately for him the loft has a new tenant.

"hey baby we've got some time, its not like the Avengers are chasing me or anything. How about I tell you a little about myself ?"

Some days thing just don't roll your way.

I've always thought the Grey Gargoyle was pretty lame, but here he's using his powers in kind of a near way. Anything he touches can become an instant bludgeoning weapon or projectile. He could beat your brains out with a pillow or a bag of marshmallows.

Also, my mind went to the dirty place with "When I touched myself..."

More seriously, there's also the fact that getting into melee reach means risking petrification. Don't underestimate how useful a combat ability that is.

Not only does she LOOK like Margot Kidder, but Margot Neil = Margot Kidder + Noel Neill (sort of). Got to feel sorry for the poor woman here, and yes that is creative use of the Gargoyle transmutation powers.

oh god, I just remembered a Marvel Adventures Grey Gargoyle-involving plot.

dude who owned something like the Venus de Milo (it was armless, at any rate) hired the Gargoyle to kidnap a woman, petrify her, chop the arms off, and stick it on the statue.

Gargoyle responds by petrifying the dude and leaving.

Ms. M's lightning bolt costume was designed by Dave Cockrum in her own title, IIRC, or at least he was the first one to draw it. I remember a lovely Cockrum splash page of her preening at a full-length mirror in it.

I don't remember that Byrne ever drew Ms. M in the Kree red-blue costume at all; can anyone confirm?

There's nothing like good bourbon. Sadly, when most people think of bourbon, they think of that hideous, overpriced crap that isn't even even bourbon; for that matter, if you're going to go for Tennessee sour mash, pick up George Dickel instead.

Good CHRIST. Is that Tony Stark's medicine cabinet?

I must say, I've never seen a medicine cabinet...used quite that way. But now I understand the phrase "Daddy needs his medicine" even better now.

I don't think that's a medicine cabinet - it's located in the living room, and the Gargoyle refers to it as a 'secret cache', which seems to imply that it's supposed to be a secret sliding panel behind which one keeps secret things. My guess is that Margot Neil discovered it by accident and thought 'oh, hey, this'd be a cool liquor cabinet!'

How is he an 'ethnic villain'? I mean, yes, he's French, but he doesn't even have an accent - if you didn't know his origin, you'd never know where he was from; even his name is relatively nondescript. It's not like he's going 'Zut alors! You zeely Amairican neetweets, zis wine ees from an inferior year! Eeet ees nod feet to be, 'ow you zay, consumed! Huh! Stupeed non-French peoples!'

Lots of people in comics have that mustache, including Mandrake the Magician and, on occasion, Tony Stark. Are you implying that they're all French?

[info]volksjager
2009-07-28 11:39 am UTC (link)
Well I do know his origin. By ethnic I mean sometimes writers feel a need to make a character reflect their country of origin. In this case Notre Dame /Gargoyle . You don't have to be a complete pantomime like Batroc.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]psychop_rex
2009-07-28 09:16 pm UTC (link)
I suppose, but to me an 'ethnic' character is one which is specifically created to not simply reflect their country of origin, but to glory in it. In the Marvel U, these would include, yes, Batroc, also some members of Alpha Flight, Shamrock, the Collective Man, arguably the Red Skull (although he's grown past that somewhat), the original Arabian Knight, Captain Britain, Union Jack, etc. All of these characters are gratuitously French/Canadian/British/what have you; they glory in their stereotypes like a pig glories in mud; their respective speeches are thick with ethnic accents and phrases - in short, they virtually never stop reminding you how very, very ethnic they are. Mind you, a number of them progress past this - most of the characters I mentioned are quite interesting ones, and Captain Britain in particular is one of my favorite superheroes - but their ethnicity is still an inherent part of who they are, inseparable from their overall identity. With the Grey Gargoyle, I don't really think that applies - he may have been inspired by the Notre Dame gargoyles, but from his speech, costume and overall demeanor, he might just as well be from New York, London, or anywhere else where they speak 'pompous'. If you hadn't told me he was French, I honestly don't think I would have guessed it.

Hmm, well it seems more what your talking about is nationality. In a time when if you were a superhero and black, you were "Black Goliath","Black Panther", "Black Vulcan" ect. perhaps you were written to a stereotype more than a national identity ?

[info]psychop_rex

That's a variant on what I'm talking about, yes - although to be fair, at least there IS an actual animal called a Black Panther, so that didn't come out of nowhere.
