Some pages from Amazing Spider-Man #600

First off, here's the new look for Doctor Octopus. What a mess. I'm not going to post the rest, but apparently Ock is dying from a combination of the radiation in his initial accident and a life of getting knocked in the head by superpowered beings when he's not superhuman himself, wants to go out with a bang, etc...you know the drill by now.

...and the final pages after the wedding between Aunt May and Gary Stu Jameson....

To me, it looks more like Romita jr and Slott hit her with the 'drunken stick'. Then the 'pink' one.

I think she's pretty much in line with everyone else, at the same level of attractiveness that a normal person would have. Compare Peter here to the way he was drawn from the late sixties through the early eighties, when, never mind spider powers, any guy who looked like that could regularly get women who looked like Gwen and Mary Jane.

"Anna Watson, what have you done?!"

Anna must have picked out MJ's dress. Blegh. As much as I love MJ, I'm kinda dreading what the BND brain trust has in store for her.

And JJJ Sr. didn't die? Well, I am genuinely surprised.

Yeah, MJ has looked better. Which is odd, because JRJr usually draws her pretty well.

And I love how that page assumes we're thinking of "Tiger" jokes, and not "Oh we fucking hate you so much Marvel" jokes.

I love MJ. Which is why I'm extra upset that her return after the BND screw-up involves a dress that is completely hideous dress and drag-queen makeup. I mean, seriously, WTF? "Tiger" jokes, yeah right, try fuming over many (not all, there are a few small scenes I've seen that I was fond of) of the things that have happened since the gigundo retcon of DOOM!!!(TM). *sigh* I declare the MA-verse to be canon and 616 to be the AU, at least for the time being. Yep.

What?

Seriously, What?

There's nothing wrong with that. it's not *particularly* awesome (and the Doc Ock redesign reminds me of the mulians from RahXephon) but it's hardly worth the kind of vitriol people are putting out.

There's some minor complaints, but seriously, when people are complaining on irrelevant details of something they don't like, beacuse they don't like other parts of it, it's just getting annoying.

So, I'm sure there's a reason why everyone in those last couple panels is acting like MJ has just done something horrible; it's not like she was ever friends with any of these people or anything, certainly she never could have possibly liked Aunt May and wanted to be there for her wedding, because that would imply that she could have relationships other than romantic ones and with people who are not Peter, and that she might possibly belong on her own merits at a big Spider-event, because that would imply that she has character traits rather than just being an evil harpy here to suck youth out of Peter. (And, seriously, if they're acting like she's done something horribly by showing up because Peter can't handle being in a room with his ex, then I'm in favor of her sucking at least enough youth out of him for him to have a modicum of emotional maturity.)

Also, as a redhead, I have to say that no redhead over the age of twelve should need to be told not to wear that outfit. Pink dress? Lipstick the color of your hair? Way, way, WAY too much eyeshadow? Man, I'd look better than that, and I'm faaaaaar less attractive. (I cannot help but notice that all the women seem to have the same damn long nails painted in shades of pink and red. Because that's what women's fingernails look like, oh wait, no.)

I will only say this:

JRjr, when we first met Mary Jane, all those years ago, she was bangin'. I mean, all sorts of gorgeous. That era, for all its wacky sartorial tastes, knew how to make women hot mommas without even showing that much skin. Seriously, Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane around that time can even make a boy firmly raised up in the 90's get sweaty.

And instead you give us THIS? The bow - cute, but RANDOM placement. The dress? Uninspired. THE COLORING? Hideous. If Mary Jane Watson is coming to a wedding she's going to come back with a fuckin' Galactus-sized BANG, not some cutesy Disney-wannabe princess dress.

JRjr, I love your art, but....b**ch, please.

P.S. Quesada, you stop pokin' fun at us fans now, y'hear? We're paying your checkbook. Well, no, I'm not, seeing as the only book I'm actively looking at is AoA. But still, it's the principle.

So does anyone else who read the entire issue feel it was ... mildly sexist? I mean, there was no single moment which made me go, "Oh my god, that's so inappropriate," but they just added up to leave a bad aftertaste.

- Spidey and Daredevil have a conversation about why they can never be honest with each other or it'll doom the women in their lives (and implicitly, why editorial "had" to undo the marriage and relegate Mary Jane to a bit character).
- Carly and Norah try their hands at detective work and end up as hostages.
- Spidey goes to the FF and Susan tells Johnny to go to "his friend," nevermind that Spidey was her friend just last issue.
- Johnny Storm makes a big deal out of rescuing the "girls" Spidey is friends with, blatantly flirting with them when they have other things on their minds, and of course Carly invites him to the wedding anyway.
- The whole drama of WHO WILL PETER GO WITH TO THE WEDDING - resolved by Peter going with his roommate Michelle, emphasized as his "platonic" friend. Forget them being "platonic," we've never even been shown them liking each other! And a big deal is made about how attractive everyone else at the wedding thinks she is.
- Every single woman at the wedding stampedes to catch the bouquet? Give me a fucking break, Slott. Even if we discount Norah for making an ironic statement, that's still completely ridiculous.

Keep in mind that I'm not saying Dan Slott himself is sexist, but I do suspect that there are some unspoken attitudes at play here. Maybe less so sometimes, like with Johnny Storm, who arguably is a sexist pig, but maybe sometimes more, like the scenes with Susan, Michelle, and to a lesser extent Carly that push the viewpoint that men and women can't be platonic friends. Not to mention all the silliness at the wedding.
