This is my problem with the book too. And the whole "Firestar gets cancer, eventho she already had it, but it worked for Sex and the City".

This feels like you're damned if you do, or damned if you don't.
1 - the book does well, Joe Q says "see, i can go on berating people, and this proves the book isnt sexist".
2 - the book doesnt sell and they say "this is because it was a book with women, women dont read comics, and books with female leads dont sell"
