Hello- I need help on information
This is the Black Cat, you know the nut that does the Batman and Sons webcomic. :) I need some help on some information concerning Jason Todd's stepmother, Catherine Todd. I have a person who posted on my Deviantart account that she was a drug addict. I searched through my collection but found nothing referring to this. All I know is she died of an illness. Does anyone know if this is true? I will appreciate the help. :) Thank you, and also, I want to thank you all for the great support you have given me for the webcomic. Have a great day! TBC And image... I hope I did everything right.

Welcome to the community. Big fan of your work.
Anyways, I'm not the biggest Jason Todd buff, but this is the first I've heard of such a thing. I also heard she just died of an illness. Unless this is something that's come post Death in the family.
Normally I would also say "motto" or something to "I agree" but time and effort and respect must be paid.
LOVE your work, Black_Cat. Every image and post you make of Batman and Sons makes my day, heck, makes my MONTH. The world is a better place with your tributes out there.
As for the Jason Todd art, wish I could help, but I know the community will do there best to oblige.
Bigtime motto. Huge frickin motto.
I remember when I posted the first story (Back to the Cave), wondering if I made the biggest and most embarrassing mistake in my (artistic) life. I have to say, I'm still taken back on how much this series has been embraced.
I can never say it enough: Thank you. :)
Thank you, but I have been a lurker since daily_scans started here. :)
I've heard both versions of her death, though I can't link to scans for either one, I'm afraid. I've also seen a version where it was a combination of both (I believe she became ill, presumably with HIV/AIDs, through a contaminated needle, and died as a result of that), but that was in fanon.
Regardless, I don't believe there's definitive canon that would make it either, so it's up to your discretion, I suppose.
The only image I can find (I don't have it scanned dang it) is in Death in the Family where it just shows her hooked up to a resperator and notes "...her life was cut short by an illness that didn't care how much love she had in her heart"
Hi! Just want to say: You ain't nothin' but a real cool breeze!
Yep in Batman issue 409, she dies from a OD. But in Batman issue 426, she dies from an illness.
This is purely speculation, but one could always argue that perhaps she OD's from drugs she was taking to cope with said illness. Cheap medical care, etc. I don't think it would be much of a stretch to assume that the Todds didn't have health insurance.
Considering that horribly wrecked state of Jason's room when Batman found him, frankly I doubt Catherine Todd could afford any medical care at all.
I bet they decided to soften up her death for the kidlets when they wrote the more recent reference.
In the same arc they decided to get their Robin beaten to death while his birth mother was having a smoke and then blown up, they must've had strange priorities. :p
Maybe they just didn't do the research.
Has that been brought up since Jason's been back? Not his death but Shiela?
Actually, I don't know. Sheila being tied up and Jason untying her before the bomb explodes has been used in flashbacks since then. Sheila lighting up a smoke is so deeply ingrained in my Jason canon, though, I'm not sure how I'd take a retcon.
I don't think it has been brought up, which was actually my first thought for a repressed memory, but since rereading, I don't think it is. Still, I don't want it retconned. That scene is too important to me too.
Maybe, since Jason's biological mother was such a monster, they wanted to imply that at least his adoptive mother had been a good parent?
Yeah, maybe. I'm not sure I'd say she was his adoptive mother, though; he didn't find out she wasn't his biological mother until he found his birth certificate. It wasn't a formal adoption, it seemed to be more that Jason's father had remarried and she raised Jason.
She may also have been a good mother until she died of an OD, as well.
Wow. I had no idea Catherine Todd had any kind of connection to drugs at all.
And for ME to learn something new about BATMAN . . .
Seriously, it's like learning that he dies his hair, or that he learned the piano from the Mad Hatter, or something.
Well, she died of an illness which could well have had to do with drugs, which has always been how I saw it.
Would this be tied into the "horrible thing" that Bruce knew about?
At the end of Battle for the Cowl, Jason fought Dick, and Dick hit a nerve when he brought up the horrible experience of his youth, and that he could get help.
Speculation: Did Jason cause his mom to OD, or buy her the drugs that would weaken her immune system?
Speculation: Did Jason cause his mom to OD, or buy her the drugs that would weaken her immune system?
I would definitely prefer that over the "Jason was raped by child-molesters!" possibility.
Awww. What a cute icon. :)
Thank you!
Twice in my life, I had to give up buying comics due to financial issues. One of those times was when Jason's origins were being revamped, missed the whole thing! But I did catch up later on 'Death in Family', should have gone back a bit further. I'm sure one day, they'll revise the whole thing but I hope they'll show Jason's stepmother trying her best to be a good 'mom' to him. He deserves that.
Thank you all for saving me from embarrassing myself with the poster at Deviantart.
Glad superfan could provide the actual scans--I knew I'd heard both illness and drug addict but couldn't be sure where.
But I have to ask--whose yellow boot is that kicking Kid Flash?

His own, he really is THAT fast! :D
Actually, it's a miscoloured Aqualad boot.
They fixed that mistake in the TPB.

Oh and as for "I hope I did everything right", I think I speak for all of us when I say that THAT is putting it mildly! :D
Re: the scan: That's one of my favorite TT:Y1 moments, if only for Aqualad and Kid Flash's reactions to Batman. Aqualad's blush~ <333
Boy, they could do some major damage with those pointy knees of theirs...
I've been on a massive reread of Jason's stuff quite recently so I'm pretty sure on this one.
It's definitely implied that Jason's mother is an addict, though never explicitly said.
'Fraid I don't really know anything about Catherine Todd. Just wanted to pop in and say that I absolutely love your Batman and Sons webcomic. <3 |
