I wonder if the apartment related to the bed that eats people?

Hahaha same. The fact that I just watched the (2004) Phantom of the Opera movie last week doesn't help.

I know I saw that movie, but I don't remember it clearly - I can't make the connection.

Well, just that the Phantom of the Opera isn't really a phantom, but he's a dude who hangs out in the sewer beneath the opera house and threatens people when things don't go his way.

(Bonus factoid: it was directed by Joel Schumaker!)

That explains so much. *g*

I now want a cartoon of the Phantom going after people with a stapler.

There was an animated Phantom of the Opera movie for kids (based on the book or the silent movie, not the musical). I don't know who made it, but I had the video when I was little. It was pretty crappy, if I recall.

Good god. How could it not be? Phantom would make a horrible kids story. I don't know how you even begin to adapt that for children, in the Disney age.

I can't really remember much about it, TBH, but I know I liked it because it was the only way I could watch Phantom after I'd seen the musical, other than the old silent movie, which was cool in its own way, but way creepier.

Honestly, it wasn't until I watched the 2004 movie that I realized just how fucked up that story and those characters are.

It's not impossible - Disney did 'Hunchback of Notre Dame', after all, and that turned out pretty well. (Of course, one of the reasons I say that is that the original book is one of THE most depressing and pointless novels ever written, in my opinion, unless you're a REALLY big fan of Parisian architecture - so just about anything would have turned out better.) I could see a Disney Phantom being done well, with a bit of creativity - if nothing else, Christine and Raoul would have to be fleshed out a bit, since the Phantom would inevitably be made more of a bad guy, which would make them the hero and heroine, and they're WAY too cardboard-cutout for those roles at the moment. They'd probably wind up using the Lon Chaney version for reference, and I have NO PROBLEM with that.

Ha! Awesome. :) I recently read a Star Wars prequel fic (because Ewan has a lovely voice), where Obi-Wan was dispatched on a diplomatic mission to a world where all communication is done through song.

Wah! I can't find it now, but it was hilarious. It turns out that the warring factions he's been sent to mediate are lead by a feuding married couple. :)

The apartment one might explain what kept happening to my housemate's boyfriends. There one second, gone the next...
